The Kentucky Oaks is for Fillies

The day before the Kentucky Derby.  We have waited for this day all summer and fall as the 2 year olds made their way around the tracks increasing their distances as they grew.  January brought a new year and they all became three.  Tomorrow is the first Saturday in May and twenty of them will go to the gate.  Today is the day for the fillies, the Kentucky Oaks.

Churchill Race 11 {Kentucky Oaks~G1~1 1/8 mile~3 year old~fillies~Stakes}
A full, extremely competitive field goes to the gate in the race that Rachel Alexandra blasted her way to victory in the muck, last year.  This year the overwhelming favorite is Blind Luck (Bejarano / Hollendorfer) with the highest surface and last out speed number. She has also worked magnificently with three strong workouts.  Definitely the one to beat.  Amen Hallelujah (Leparoux / Dutrow) looks like the best of the rest.  She has gone this distance with the highest speed number and two robust workouts.  Tidal Pool (Borel / Lukas) has the second highest speed number on the dirt surface and two athletic workouts.  She will be in the hunt for a piece of the purse.  Beautician (Solis / McPeek) has posted the best workout tab and appears to be ready to fire.  She has the highest speed number over the Churchill track and three solid, peaking workouts.  It's Tea Time (A. Garcia / Arnold) may be the surprise having already traversed this distance while on Turf.  She has a three race progression and two sturdy workouts.  Let's play the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs.

$2 WIN:  #5 Blind Luck.
$2 SHOW:  #13 Amen Hallelujah
$2 SHOW:  #8 Tidal Pool
10 CENT Superfecta (if available):  #5 Blind Luck / #13 Amen Hallelujah / #8 Tidal Pool / #6 Beautician, #1 It's Tea Time.

Beautiful Arlington Park Opens Today

Ahh, the Summer horse racing season is upon us.  Arlington Park opens today and Kentucky Derby 136 is Saturday at Churchill.  Let the horse racing weekend begin!!

Churchill Downs Race 9 {1 mile~Turf~3 year old Up~Allowance}
A nice full field for this Turf allowance and there is a great deal of parity among today's starters.  The edge goes to Whirling Thunder (Lanerie / Kenneally) with a decent last out speed number, two race progression, and two athletic works.  He likes the Churchill course and sports the highest (tie) speed number at the distance.  Harken Up (Castellano / Wilkes) will be going from dirt to turf with the highest last out speed number and two limber workouts.  He will challenge for the victory.  Quite A Handful (Maragh / Hansen) looks good with 100% in the money at the distance, a two race progression, and two robust, peaking workouts.  Indomable [GER] (Leparoux / Motion) is the unknown quantitiy in this race as it will be his first in the U.S.  He shows a 100% in the money record over the surface and at the distance in his native Germany. He is trained by Graham Motion, one of the best Turf trainers in the world.  He goes out with three hardy workouts.  He may need his first American race, but it is safe to place him in our superfecta.  Let's play Churchill.

$2 SHOW:  #1 Whirling Thunder
$2 SHOW:  #2 Harken Up
$1 Superfecta (10 CENT if available):  #1 Whirling Thunder / #2 Harken Up / #5 Quite A Handful, #7 Indomable [GER] / #5, #7

Arlington Park Race 9 {1 mile~all weather track~3 year old Up~IL~Maiden Special Weight}
The beautiful Arlington Park opens today.  Right now it is breezy and light showers are moving through.  forcast is the same later this afternoon at first post.  A full field of twelve goes to the gate, including three first time starters (FTS).  These are always tough to handicap, especially on Arlington's polytrack.  We have to give a slight edge to Burning Crusade (Perez / Block) as a FTS.  The stat that pops out is trainer, Chris Block has a 23% win record with first time starters.  Couple that with the fact that Eddie Perez is coming off a break-out season at Hawthorne.  Like this 4-year old FTS chances.  Rob Young (Wade / Young) looks like he is ready to race over the polytrack surface with the second highest (tie) last out speed number which was at the odd 1 mile 70 yard Hawthorne route distance.  A fairly good workout heightens his chances.  A Lot of Honey (B. Meier / Dorris) is coming down from the same distance, has a five race progression, and a sinewy workout.  Two horse that will round out our 10 CENT Superfecta play that will be moving up in distance are Captain Jack (Diego / Granitz) and Sharp Roma (Hamilton / Yanez).  Both display strong workout tabs.  Bear in mind opening day at Arlington usually has some bombers as many horses are trying the poly for the first time.  Play it accordingly.  Let's have fun at Arlington Park.

$2 WIN / SHOW:  #7 Burning Crusade
$2 SHOW:  #8 Rob Young
10 CENT Superfecta:  #7 Burning Crusade / #8 Rob Young / #4 Alot of Honey / #5 Captain Jack, #6 Sharp Roma.

From One Sunshine State to Another

With the Kentucky Derby only a week away and all of the Derby prep races completed we set out sights on two wonderful Turf races in the sunny states of Florida and California.

Calder Race 8 {Miami Mile~G3~1 mile~Turf~3 year old Up~Stakes}
Quite an evenly matched group goes to the gate for the season opening stakes race at Calder Race Course.  Jet Propulsion (Trujillo / Wolfson) has a slight edge here with the highest speed number across the board including at Calder.  This speedy guy has a solid chance to wire this field.  He has put in two robust workouts and has a decent last out speed number.  His chief competition will come from Mambo Meister (Cruz / Cleaves) who looks to track him down in the stretch.  Mambo Meister has the highest (tie) last out speed number and four robust workouts going into this race.  Another who looks ready to fire is Pinckney Hill (Maragh / Penna) with a triple digit last out speed number and four hearty, peaking workouts.  Three others look to battle for a piece of the purse or a possible trip to the winners circle.  Pleasant Strike (DeCarlo / Pletcher) looks solid with a triple digit speed number at the distance, a decent last out speed number and three sparkling, peaking workouts.  Motovato (Saez / Wolfson) looks ready to make his Turf debut with the highest (tie) last out speed number, a nice five race progression, and three athletic, peaking workouts.  March To Victory (Bravo / Clement) may be the surprise in here with strong Turf stats, he is coming down in distance and shows a peaking three furlong workout.  A big plus is the the fact that March To Victory is trained by the world renowned Turf master, Christophe Clement.  Overall, this race is a tough one to call, but call it we must.  Let's play the first day of the Calder Race Course meet.

$2 SHOW:  #8 Jet Propulsion
$2 SHOW:  #9 Mambo Meister
10 CENT Superfecta:  #8 Jet Propulsion / #9 Mambo Meister / #4 Pinckney Hill / #6 Pleasant Strike, #2 Motovato, #11 March To Victory.

Hollywood Race 8 {Inglewood Handicap~G3~1 1/16 mile~Turf~3 year old Up~Stakes}
A full field goes to the gate in this Turf contest.  Great Siege [IRE] has a slight edge having already been successful at this distance.  He shows the second highest last out speed number and a well-built, peaking four workout tab.  Compari (Gomez / M. Jones) will likely be the favorite in here, but has not gone that distance.  He is a speedster who may be likely to wire this field with the highest last out speed number and two healthy workouts.  Red Day Alert [GB] looks like he will be able to handle this distance with a decent last out speed number, love for the Turf, and three intense, peaking workouts.  Dark Islander [IRE] looks like he might get a piece of the purse with a decent last out speed number, a three race progression, and four brilliant, peaking workouts.  Welcome to Hollywood; Let's play a turf race.

$2 SHOW:  #5 Great Siege [IRE]
$2 SHOW:  #4 Dark Islander [IRE]

Opening Day at Churchill Downs

Today is opening day at Churchill downs and we look at the final Derby prep race.  The Kentucky Derby is only one week away and all of the derby contenders have been putting in blistering workouts which can only mean that the track is FAST!!  We will also look at a great Turf race at Golden Gate.  And we will look at another derby prep at Aqueduct, though it is unlikely any of the horses in the race will be pointed toward the derby.  This is a great weekend for racing.

Aqueduct Race 9 {Withers~G3~1 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
This will be a great race with a modest field of six.  D' Funnybone (Prado / R. Dutrow) figures to be the favorite with the highest overall speed number, the highest last out speed number, and three fantastic, peaking workouts.  The only concern here is whether he can get this distance.  He has developed the reputation as a fearsome sprinter and there will be no wagering value to him.  Ibboyee (J. Velazquez / Pletcher) has the second highest speed number overall and at the distance.  He has put in a solid workout tab in preparation for this race.  He should be able to fire on this distance well and close for the victory.  Spangled Star (C. Velasquez / R. Dutrow) is a vastly improving colt, perhaps a late bloomer?  He is 100% in the money over this distance and has put in three strong workouts.  Could be the big surprise.  Most Happy Fella (Coa / Badgett) will show speed and with all of the speed in this race could hold on for a piece of the purse as he has handled this distance nicely.  Most Happy Fella shows a decent last out speed number, is coming down off the distance, and three superb workouts.  Let's give Aqueduct a whirl.

$2 SHOW:  #6 Ibboyee
$2 SHOW:  #5 Spangled Star
NO 10 CENT Superfecta offered in this race.

Churchill Race 10 {Cliff's Edge Derby Trial~G3~1 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
Ahh, with the Kentucky Derby a week away, this will be an extremely exciting race with a least two in here that could get enough graded stakes to make it to the gate on the first Saturday in May.  Pleasant Prince (Leparoux / Ward) looks exceptionally well place in here.  He wheels back after a disappointing finish in the Bluegrass on synthetic.  Churchill is his home track and he knows this dirt well.  He posted a decent last out speed number over the synthetic at Keeneland and has a very fluid work.  Pleasant Prince should be able to close well given the speed in this race.  Game On Dude (Albarado / Baffert) looks tough with a good last out speed number and three athletic, peaking workouts.  He has a goo chance to be victorious in this mile route.  Eightyfiveinafifty (Dominguez / Contessa) is a really fast horse and will lead this group through torrid fractions.  Churchill has been showing speed all week with  exceptionally fast workout times.  Eightyfiveinafifty has the highest last out speed number and two blistering, speedy workouts.  With Ramon Dominguez on board (70% in the money in route races) there is a good chance he could wire this field.  It is very important to watch this race to see how the Churchill track plays leading up to next Saturday's Kentucky Derby.  Another who has a great chance to gain a piece of the purse is Hurricane Ike (Borel / Sadler). He holds the second best last out speed number, a triple digit, and three well-built workouts.  He appears to be ready to press the pace.  Privilaged (Maragh / Sadler) could be the surprise with the third highest last out speed number and three vibrant workouts.  A nice pace pressing horse.  Let's play Churhill Downs.

$2 SHOW:  #4 Pleasant Prince
$2 SHOW:  #1 Game On Dude
10 CENT Superfecta:  #4 Pleasant Prince / #1 Game On Dude / #10 Eightyfiveinafifty / #5 Hurricane Ike, #3 Privilaged.

Golden Gate Race 8 {San Franciso Mile~G2~1 mile~Turf~4 year old Up~Stakes}
A tremendous field of eight Turfers go to the green.  There will be speed. There will be closers.  Golden Balls [IRE] (Blanc / Cassidy) looks to have the edge here with the highest last out speed number and three virile, peaking workouts.  Like his chances.  It should be noted, all of the horses entered here have put in excellent workouts in preparation for this mile on the grass.  Any of these guys could find their way to the winners circle.  Golden Balls [IRE] just seems to be the best.  Bold Chieftain (R. Baze / Dollase) will be the chief competition with the second highest last out speed number and three sturdy workouts.  He is also 100% in the money over the Gold Gate turf course posting the highest speed number.  Should go off as the favorite.  Both Golden Balls [IRE] and Bold Chieftain share the highest speed number (triple digit) at the distance.  Monterey Jazz (T. Baze / Dollase) sports the second highest speed number (triple digit) at the distance and will be part of the speed in this race.  Monterey Jazz has posted the third highest last out speed number and three husky workouts.  Red Sun (M. Martinez / Gaines) could be the surprise in this one with a good last out speed number and four spirited workouts.  He will also show speed in the race and could hold on for a piece of the purse.  Let's play Golden Fields.

$2 SHOW:  #3 Golden Balls [IRE]
$2 SHOW:  #6 Monterey Jazz
10 CENT Superfecta:  #3 Golden Balls [IRE] / #4 Bold Chieftain / #6 Monterrey Jazz / #8 Red Sun.

Spring is in the air as the horses run for the Turf.  Today we look at Turf contests at Keeneland and Hollywood.

Keeneland Race 9 {Elkhorn~G2~1 1/2 mile~Turf~4 year old Up~Stakes}
It is Friday and the last day of the Keeneland Spring meet.  A full field of twelve go to the gate to vie for the winners circle before moving on to other venues.  While others may be favored in the glorious Elkhorn, Brass Hat (Borel / Bradley) will be the surprise here.  The old boy should be able to run well in his second start after a layoff with two winsome workouts and the highest speed number (tie) of the group.  Sudden War [ARG] (Solis / McPeek) should compete at the same level as the old boy with the highest last out speed number and two fierce workouts.  Expansion (Leparoux / C. Brown) will challenge magnificently with a solid last out speed number, a five race progression, and four powerful, peaking workouts.  Transduction Gold (Mena / Glenney) has the second highest speed number (tie) on the turf, a good last out speed number, and two heaping workouts.  Let's play Keeneland for the final time this Spring.

$2 SHOW:  #3 Sudden War [ARG]
10 CENT Superfecta:  #11 Brass Hat / #3 Sudden War / #5 Expansion / #7 Transduction Gold.

Hollywood Race 5 {1 mile~Turf~3 year old~Optional Claiming}
A very nice Turf race with a modest field of eight.  There are two standouts here.  Either one could find his way to the winners circle.  Hockley (Flores / Harty) looks tough with the highest speed number at the distance, a three race progression and three stellar workouts.  Thomas Baines (Rosario / O'Neill) looks strong with the highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and two robust, peaking workouts.  Both of these two guys will battle for the win.  Coloursoftheglen [IRE] (Quinonez / Truman) looks ready with a decent last out speed number and four Herculean workouts.  He should be in serious contention for a piece of the purse.  Theatrical Pro (Espinoza / DeLima) has a decent last out speed number, a two race progression, and one quality work.  Let's play Hollywood.

$2 SHOW:  #1 Hockley
$2 SHOW:  #5 Thomas Baines
10 CENT Superfecta:  #1 Hockley, #5 Thomas Baines / #1, #5 / #4 Coloursoftheglen [IRE], #3 Theatrical Pro / #3, #4

A Thrilling Thursday at Keeneland

As the Spring meet at Keeneland nears its end this year, we look at two tremendous Turf contests today.

Keeneland Race 8 {Grey Goose Bewitch~G3~1 1/2 mile~Turf~4 year old Up~fillies/mares~Stakes}
A field of superb seven go to the gate in this stakes race.  Changing Skies [IRE] (Desormeaux / Mott) appears to have a slight edge with a decent last out speed number and three sturdy, peaking workouts.  This gal has covered this distance overseas and should like the turf course today.  Lady Shakespeare (J. Velazquez / Attfield) looks good in this one with a decent last out speed number, a three race progression, and two hardy workouts.  Nehantic Kat (Castellano / Tagg) looks fine with a decent last out speed number and three strong, peaking workouts.  Sweet and Flawless (J. Alvarado / Reed) could be the surprise in here as she is proven over this distance, has a three race progression, and two good workouts.  Magical Theatre (Maragh / Arnold) could be the other surprise that could capture a piece of the purse.  She has a four race progression going and a couple of good works.  Let's play Keeneland.

$2 SHOW:  #6 Changing Skies [IRE]
$2 SHOW:  #7 Lady Shakespeare
10 CENT Superfecta:  #6 Changing Skies [IRE] / #7 Lady Shakespeare / #1 Nehantic Kat / #3 Sweet and Flawless, #5 Magical Theatre.

Keeneland Race 9 {1 3/16 mile~Turf~4 year old Up~fillies/mares~Allowance}
Some of the best Turf jockey's will have mounts in another fantastic Keeneland Turf contest.  In this race Dance Pass [IRE] (Gomez / Clement) is the clear favorite and deservedly so.  She has covered this distance and longer overseas.  Dance Pass is coming off a layoff and shows a two race progression.  She has worked wonderfully with three athletic workouts.  Gypsy Baby [IRE] (Graham / Thornbury) could be the surprise in this one with the third highest (tie) speed number on the surface and a good workout in preparation for the race.  Sea Gull (Albarado / Howard) looks great with the third highest last out speed number and the best workout tab; four powerful, peaking workouts.  Flying Spur (Desormeaux / Mott) should compete with a decent last out speed number and three stout workouts.  Flaming Rose (Solis / Coaxtrieaux) will be solid in this event.  She could pull off the victory with the second highest speed number and three fiery workouts.  Let's play the final race at Keeneland today.

TIZ CHROME, R.I.P.

It was with sadness that we learned that the three-year old colt, Tiz Chrome had to be euthanized after breaking down during an early morning workout at Churchill Downs this past weekend.

We were first introduced to this handsome son of Tiznow by Mary Forney's award winning blog (maryforney.blogspot.com).  He had a most pleasing all grey/white face.  Many horses have a unique blaze on their forehead, Tiz Chrome had a terrifically splendid, warm face.

We liked this Bob Baffert trained derby prospect so much, we included him in our fantasy stable as part of "The Road to the Roses" game.  Many a handicapper and horse lover alike play this fantasy stable game leading up to and including the Kentucky Derby.

We have not been so enamored with a horse since a couple of years back when at Arlington Park, we were near the paddock observing the horses when a big horse by the name of Winvictus came over and nodded his head and seemingly gave us a wink.  Winvictus was not expected to hit the board that day based on the analysis provided by the track handicappers.  But we liked the fact that this horse gave us a nod.  We decided to place a small $2 Show wager as if to show support.  Lo and behold Winvictus placed third that day and we cashed enough to buy a "furlong freeze".

We will remember this smashing young colt, Tiz Chrome.  Oddly, when we read the news Trace Adkins song Chrome was playing in the background.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Tiz Chrome's connections.

R.I.P. Tiz Chrome.

Two of the Best Tracks; Keeneland and Santa Anita

Today we look at a couple of very nice stakes races at Keeneland and Santa Anita.
The Kentucky Derby is only two weeks away.

Keeneland Race 8 {Ben Ali~G3~1 1/8 mile~4 year old Up~Stakes}
A terrific Sunday afternoon race with eight going to the gate.  The Jonathan Sheppard trained, Just As Well (Leparoux / Sheppard ), looks to be the horse to beat.  He has the highest speed number overall (tie) and over the Turf.  His last out speed number is tops and has coupled it with two blazing workouts.  There is no doubt he will be the favorite.  It also helps that jockey, Julian Leparoux, who is having another great Keeneland meet, will be onboard.  It appears the chief challenger will be Dubious Miss (Borel / McGee) with the second highest last out speed number and three superb workouts.  This guy loves the Keeneland track.  It would not be a surprise if he nips Just As Well at the wire.  Big Top (Gomez / Zito) looks solid with the third highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and two hardy workouts.  Giant Oak (Bridgmohan / Pessin) should run a good race with a decent last out speed number and two sinewy workouts.  This will be the big lumbering horse's second venture over the synthetic surface.  Could be a surprise.  Palladio (Desormeaux / Attfield) has the second highest speed number at the distance, a decent last out speed number, a five race progression and three athletic workouts.  He will be in the mix.  Timber Reserve (Castellano / Kimmel) shows the highest speed number at the distance, the third highest (tie) speed number last out, a three race progression, and three limber workouts.  He is likely to be the speed and at Keeneland speed has held sway at this meet.  Let's play this highly competitive race at Keeneland.

$2 WIN:  #3 Just As Well
$2 SHOW:  #4 Dubious Miss
10 CENT Superfecta:  #3 Just As Well / #4 Dubious Miss / #2 Big Top, #5 Giant Oak / #6 Palladio, #8 Timber Reserve, #2, #5.

Santa Anita Race 10 {San Juan Capistrano~G2~1 3/4 mile~Turf~4 year old and Up~Stakes}
A full field goes to the gate in an exciting end to the Santa Anita meet.  This another race in which the prospective winner may be a forgone conclusion.  Bourbon Bay (Bejarano / Drysdale) looks to be the very best in this long distance route.  He shows the second highest last out speed number (tie) along with three brawny workouts.  Bourbon Bay loves the Santa Anita turf and has been perfect in his three races over the surface.  No doubt will be the horse to beat.  Yodelen Dan (Espinoza / Mulhall) looks in great shape for the season finale with a six race progression and two great workouts.  He too loves the Santa Anita turf where he is 85% in the money with thirteen races over it.  The hard knocking Yodelen Dan will run a good race.  Falcon Rock [IRE] (Tallamo / S. Callaghan) looks ready to fire with a decent last out speed number and three virile workouts.  Stalingrad (Flores / Cassidy) will be the speed in this race and most assuredly set the pace.  Stalingrad has the highest last out speed number and four gymnastic, peaking workouts.  It should be noted that none of the twelve entrants in this race has gone the 1 3/4 mile distance.  Let's have fun with this "marathon" distance Turf race at Santa Anita.

$2 WIN:  #10 Bourbon Bay.
$2 SHOW:  #3 Yodelen Dan.
10 CENT Superfecta:  #10 Bourbon Bay / #3 Yodelen Dan / #4 Falcon Rock [IRE] / #11 Stalingrad.

Bankroll drops to $4.10.  We will supplement with $10.00 for today's races.
Hopefully we will end this slumping weekend with good investments today.

Another Derby Prep at Keeneland

The Kentucky Derby is only two weekends away.  Today is one of the last chances to earn additional graded stakes earnings to qualify for a gate in the Derby.

Keeneland Race 9 {Coolmare Lexington~G2~1 1/16 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
A very competitve field of twelve go to the gate in one of the few opportunities for at least two colts in here to get additional graded earnings and make it to the big dance.  Connemarra (R. Baze / Pletcher) will need to win this one to make into the Kentucky Derby. He has a good chance to do so with a solid last out speed number and three victories over the synthetic surface.  Connemarra is coming down in distance from his last and looks ready to run well.  Uptowncharleybrown (Gomez / White) is the other that has to win for the 180k winnings to help him get on the derby bubble.  He will be the sentimental favorite as his trainer Alan Seewald recently passed away.  However, Uptowncharleybrown may suffer the same fate that other potential deby contenders have when moving from dirt to synthetic. He has a decent last out speed number and two solid workouts to make him competitive.

If cooler weather prevails and the synthetic track tightens up a bit, the big surprise will be Call Shot (Alvarado / Catalano) who has the third highest (tie) last out speed number and by far, the best work out tab of all of these horses.  Trainer, Wayne Catalano, attends to his charges with care and purpose.  This guy has a great chance to close fast and win.  Exhi (Albarado / Pletcher) looks very strong in here also with the third highest speed number last out, a three race progression, and very fine workout.  Expect Lonesome Street (Leparoux / Maker) to be another surprise in here with the fourth highest last out speed number, the third highest speed (tie) number at the distance, and two exceptionally strong workouts.  Heavenville (Bridgmohan / Asmussen) in another who will run well also with the third highest last out speed number and two robust workouts.  Krypton (A. Garcia / McLaughlin) will also show his speed with the highest last out speed number and two athletic workouts.  Krypton has gone this distance over the turf.  The transition from turf to synthetic is much smoother than from dirt to synthetic which gives this guy a little edge.  Let's play the Coolmore Lexington in what will be one the most exciting races of the the Derby prep season.

$2 WIN / SHOW:  #5 Call Shot.
$2 SHOW:  #10 Connemarra.
10 CENT Superfecta:  #5 Call Shot / #8 Exhi / #10 Connemarra / #7 Lonesome Street, #9 Heavenville, #1 Krypton.

Ah, Aqueduct and Hawthorne

A splendid Friday for Horse Racing.  Today we look at allowance races at Aqueduct and Hawthorne.

Beautiful Saturday for KD Preps

A beautiful Spring Saturday falls over two horse racing states, Kentucky and Arkansas, as we edge closer to the first Saturday in May.  Today we look at two fabulous derby preps.

Keeneland Race 9 {Toyota Blue Grass~G1~1 1/8 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
A very talented field of nine goes to the gate for this Kentucky Derby prep.  Interactif (Bejarano / Pletcher) holds sway in this with versatility over all surfaces; synthetic, turf, and dirt. He holds a great speed number over the synthetic surface, has a three race progression, and one good workout.  Paddy O'Prado (Desormeaux / Romans) has been a turf specialist and will be making his first run over the synthetic.  The transition from turf to synthetic has been a lot easier.  He shows the third highest speed number over the distance, albeit on turf, has shown a very nice five race progression and has posted two exceptional workouts.  Pleasant Prince (Leparoux / Ward) needs graded earnings to make it to the big dance.  He appears ready to put in a big performance with the highest speed number at the distance, the highest speed number last out and two furious workouts.  It would be no surprise if he closes fast for victory.  He will need to run at least third to give his owners, Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey another Derby contender.  The fight for fourth will be among three others in this race.  First Dude (Dominguez / Romans) has the fourth highest speed number at this distance, the third highest speed number last out, and a strong workout.  Make Music for Me (Smith / Barba) looks ready moving up to this distance with a three race progression and four robust workouts.  Aikenite (Gomez / Pletcher) has gone this distance successfully and looks well prepared with two solid workouts.  Let's play the Toyota Blue Grass at Keeneland.

Oaklawn Race 9 {Arkansas Derby~G1~1 1/8 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
This will be the race to watch this weekend, the Arkansas Derby.  A very solid field with such depth that any of these superb horses capable of victory.  This race will test all of these colts mettle.  Noble's Promise (Albarado / McPeek) looks to be the best.  He has the highest last out speed number posting a triple digit.  Noble's Promise currently has a two race progression and two superlative workouts. He will be forwardly placed ready to pounce in the stretch.  Dublin (Thompson / Lukas) looks great with the third (tie) highest speed number and two hardy, peaking workouts.  Expect him to run a big race.  Northern Giant (V. Espinoza / Lukas) is the only one proven over this distance, also has the third highest speed number, a two race progression, and three athletic, peaking workouts.  Berberis (Gryder / Asmussen) could be the big surprise in this race.  Trainer, Steve Asmussen does not yet have a derby contender.  This could be his candidate.  Berberis recently broke his maiden, but is 100% in the money over his three race career.  He will be moving up in distance with a two race progression and four powerful, peaking workouts.  Super Saver (Borel / Pletcher) will be the speed in this race and will attempt to hold on for a piece of this purse.  He has the second highest speed number and two sturdy, peaking workouts.  This promises to be the most fantastic, exciting derby prep of the season.  Let's play the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park.

Oaklawn Race 10 {Apple Blossom~G1~1 1/8 mile~4 year old Up~fillies/mares}
Zenyatta.  Say it again, Zenyatta !!  She should have no problem putting away this very small field.  Zenyatta (Smith / Shirreffs) dominates with the highest speed number overall, on the dirt surface, at the distance, and at Oaklawn Park--all triple digits.  None of the other fillies in here have a triple digit number to their credit.  Still undefeated, Zenyatta will remain so after this race.  The others will be battling for second place.  Any of them could find themselves the other half of the exacta.  War Echo (Bridgmohan / Asmussen) looks quite capable with the second highest speed number at the distance and four sturdy, peaking workouts.  Just Jenda (Thompson / C. Jones) has not yet gone this distance, but has the second best last out speed number and three tremendous workouts.  Be Fair (Borel / Lukas) will be the speed in this race.  Having gone this distance before she has a decent last out speed number and four hearty, peaking workouts.  She will need to hold on to get a piece of the purse.  We will have fun with this race and place a 50 cent Trifecta.  Let's see the impressive Zenyatta win again at Oaklawn Park.

Velazquez / McLaughlin).  This guy looks ready to run a fine race with a decent last out speed number and three athletic, peaking workouts.  Riviera Cocktail (Albarado / Drysdale) looks good in here with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two tough, peaking workouts.  Let's play Keeneland.

A small, but very competitive group lines up in this one.  Starlarks(IRE) (Solis / P. Gallagher) should surprise in this one. She is 100% in the money over the surface and at the distance.  Coupled with that, she has put together a very aggressive, peaking workout tab.  She is also moving down in distance from his last out.  Informed Decision (Leparoux / Sheppard) will be the overwhelming favorite with the highest speed numbers across the board and a tremendous in the money record of 92% for her fourteen race career.  She loves the Keeneland track and four WINs for four races.  Don't know if their will be much wagering value here.  Informed Decision will be making her first race of the year.  Witty (Espinoza / Mandella) will give chace with the second highest last out speed number and a superlative, peaking workout tab.  Direct Line (Gomez / Oliver) will also be coming down in distance from a mile last out.  She is showing improvement and has put together three very nice workouts.  In a race like this one should include all wagering interests in their 10 CENT Superfecta since there are only six going to the gate.  Let's have more fun at Keeneland.

Three Derby Preps on a Saturday

Today we look at three great prep races for the Kentucky Derby which is only four weeks away.  All of these horses will be competing for the purse to get them to the starting gate on the first Saturday in May.  Kentucky Derby starters are determined by graded stakes earnings.  Only twenty will start in the run for the roses.

Aqueduct Race 9 {Wood Memorial~G1~1 1/8 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
This will be a very talented field going to the starting gate.  Four of the six starters in this race have all posted triple digit speed numbers.  Eskendereya (J. Velazquez / Pletcher) is the favorite and deservedly so.  He has already raced over this distance posting the highest speed number.  Eskendereya also has a three race progression and four serious workouts prepping for this.  Should be counted on for the win.  The battle is for second and third to increase the graded earnings of the others.  Jackson Bend (Borel / Zito) should run a big race.  He currently has a two race progression and three superb, peaking workouts.  Schoolyard Dreams (Dominguez / Ryan) is a wonderful hard charging horse.  He has a triple digit last out speed number, a five race progression, and two fierce workouts in preparation for this race.  The others in here will be fighting for a small piece of the purse.  Carnivore (Shepherd / Delozier) is 100% in the money for his three race career and has posted the best three peaking workout tab.  Awesome Act (Leparoux / Noseda) will be flying late with his three digit last out speed number, a three race progression, and two robust workouts.  Most Happy Fella (Napravnik / Badgett) will be the speedster near the front end of the race.  He has a decent last out speed number, a four race progression, and one limber workout.  Let's play this fine Aqueduct race.

$2 SHOW:  #5 Jackson Bend
NO 10 CENT Superfecta for this race.

Santa Anita Race 6 {Santa Anita Derby~G1~1 1/8 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
Another fabulous Kentucky derby prep.  One of the most exciting of the Southern California season.  Lookin At Lucky (Gomez / Baffert) will be the favorite and should win this one.  Though he does not need the graded stakes earnings, he will need to run a good race to stay sharp for the Kentucky Derby.  Lookin At Lucky is 100% in the money for his seven race career, has the highest last out speed number and two healthy workouts.  Will be the one to beat.  Setsuko (Bejarano / Mandella) is one of only four who has traversed this distance.  He has a decent last out speed number and three well-built, peaking workouts.  Who's Up (V. Espinoza / Puhich) will be the surprise in this ten horse field.  He has the second highest speed number and has the best workout tab with three muscular, peaking workouts.  Alphie's Bet (Solis / Barba) will be closing fast and should be able to get a good piece of the purse.  He has registered a win over this distance, has a good last out speed number and has posted two hardy workouts.  Let's play the Santa Anita Derby.

Hawthorne Race 7 {Illinois Derby~G3~1 1/8 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
This is a challenging eight horse field to handicap.  All of these guys have tremendous talent and could pull off the victory.  American Lion (Flores / Harty) has a very slight edge as his workout tab is the very best of the entrants in here. He will be trying dirt for the first time.  American Lion has the third (tied) best overall speed number and a fair last out speed number.  He could be sitting on a big race.  Backtalk (Mena / Amoss) is the morning line favorite who has not yet gone this distance, but has a terrific workout tab which includes a smoking six furlong work.  Boulder Creek (Emigh / Dollase) is the only horse in the race who has gone this distance.  He has a decent last out speed number and two excellent workouts.  Turf Melody (Rose / Motion) looks ready to run a fine race.  He has the second highest last out speed number and one solid workout.  Turf Melody is also the most experienced in here with nine races to his credit.  Yawanna Twist (Prado / R. Dutrow) will undoubtedly be one of the favorites in here.  He is the only one with a triple digit speed number, his last out, and two stout workouts.  Hawthorne has a long stretch run and conditioning will be key to a victory in this race.  Let's play the Illinois Derby at Hawthorne Race Course.
