A Hollywood Sunday

We move from dirt to synthetic to close out our horse racing weekend.  Today we take a look at a couple of highly competitive races at Hollywood Park.

Hollywood Park Race 3 {Laz Barrera~G3~7 furlongs~3 year old~Stakes}
This race comes up with a tiny field for a grade three stakes race. But whew, the tiny field will have G4 speed.  Comtemplate a fast and furious pace with four of the five horses in the field having breathtaking speed.  There will not be much value.  However it certainly will be an exciting race to watch.

#5 Bench Points (Bejarano / Yakteen) is a triple crown nominee who was on the derby trail earlier in the year.  He may relish an ideal trip to close down this blazing field.  He holds the second highest last out speed number over a route, a two race progression, and two solid workouts.
$2 SHOW.

#3 Sinai (Smith / Baffert) could benefit by sitting right off the wicked pace that is sure to develop.  Interestingly, Unbridled's Song progeny seem to have an affinity to synthetic tracks as evidenced down at Keeneland and elsewhere.  This guy is another triple crown nominee who has the only recorded speed number at this distance, has a two race progression, and two strong workouts.
$2 SHOW.

No 10 CENT Superfecta due to the very small field.

Hollywood Park Race 8 {6 1/2 furlongs~3 year old Up~Allowance}
Now here is a race!  All horses in this field of eight are nearly equal in ability and speed numbers.  The race also has nearly equal parts of speed, pressers, trackers, and closers making it a great one to handicap.  Any one in this field can win.

#5 Details R Sketchy (Blanc / Palma) looks fabulous with the second highest (tie) last out speed number, a three race progression, and three dynamite workouts.  The race could set up for a closer like him to sweep into victory.
$2 SHOW.

#1 Color of Courage (Smith / Gonzalez) is coming off a year long layoff with five superior, peaking workouts.  He holds the third highest (3-way tie) speed number over the synthetics and is 100% in the money (three races) on this surface.  Should fire well fresh off the fields of green.
$2 SHOW.

#7 Sea Rascal (Rosario / Hollendorfer) will be a top challenger sharing the second highest last out speed number, holding the highest (tie) overall speed number, and putting in five strong workouts.  He should be forwardly placed ready to pounce in the stretch.
$2 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests

#2 Italian Rules (V. Espinoza / Sadler) is primed to possibly take this one with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two hearty workouts.  Another that should be close to the pace.

#3 Lunada Bay (M. Garcia / Baffert) will be the speed of the race with the third highest last out speed number, sharing the highest speed number at the distance, and putting in two superb workouts.  Could wire the field or hold on for a share of the purse pie.

It's Derby Time

The 137th running of the Kentucky Derby will go off in approximately six hours.  With one scratch the field will consist of nineteen still developing three year-olds.  There is no clear favorite, but many to consider.  The trainers have done all they can to prepare their contenders for this race, hopefully bringing them into peak for.  Now they must place them in the hands of the jockey's who must wade the horses through a thick field of equine athletes.  This years Derby is a enormous handicapping challenge.  But try we must.

Churchill Downs Race 11 {Kentucky Derby 137~G1~1 1/4 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
A very nice group of nineteen talented and improving horses will go to the post.  Not one have them have raced at this distance.  All have made their case to be in this race by virtue of their graded earnings.  In terms of speed figures all are with in quarter seconds of each other making this the most challenging field in this century.  Here is notable nine to consider.

#11 Master of Hounds (Gomez / O'Brien) is the Irish invader looking to sneak a KD win for the Euros.  He is coming back to his birthplace, Kentucky, after racing overseas.  He is the only one in the field to have raced 110 yards short of the Derby distance.  He ran well in that race in Dubai, posting a second place finish.  He has raced at Churchill Downs, albeit on the Turf.  Jockey, Garrett Gomez would like nothing better to add a Kentucky Derby win to his sound Hall of Fame resume.  Aidan O'Brien is one of the best conditioners in the world.  He will have his young charge ready.
$2 WIN / $4 SHOW.

#1 Archarcharch (Court / Fires) This could be the year for jockey, Jon Court.  It will be his first Derby mount in an already quite successful career.  Trainer William "Jinks" Fires has managed this horses racing career magnificently.  He shows the highest (tie) last out speed number, a four race progression, and three strong, peaking workouts.  He will be tracking the field.
$2 SHOW.

#19 Nehro (Nakatani / Asmussen) will challenge also with the highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and three solid, peaking workouts.  Trainer, Steve Asmussen, makes it back to the Derby with a top contender.  Jockey, Corey Nakatani, will place this guy in a good closing position.
$2 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests

#13 Mucho Macho Man (Maragh / Ritvo) is tough enough capture the win making it the first for a female trainer in one Kathy Ritvo.  Up and coming jockey, Rajiv Maragh, will guide this guy.  3M has the highest speed number over a fast dirt surface, a couple of decent last out speed numbers, and four stamina producing, peaking workouts.  He should be forwardly placed.

#17 Soldat (A. Garcia / McLaughlin) could win if the track turns up sloppy come race time.  He holds the highest overall speed number, a triple digit, in the mud.  He has put in a couple of robust workouts in preparation for this race.

#4 Stay Thirsty (Dominguez / Pletcher) is another contender with a decent speed number over the surface and three hearty workouts.  Any Todd Pletcher trained horse has to be considered.  Teaming up with jockey Ramon Dominguez makes this guy more appealing.

#8 Dialed In (Leparoux / Zito) will be closing swiftly from the clouds if a good pace sets up.  He has a couple of decent, improving last out speed numbers, a two race progression, and two workmanlike workouts.  Trainer, Nick Zito, knows how to peak his horses for the main event.  Jockey Julien Leparoux had an outstanding Kentucky Oaks day yesterday which will make this guy dangerous.

#5 Decisive Moment (Clark / Arias) is a much improving colt who appears well prepped to have a big race with two improving last out speed numbers, a two race progression, and two athletic workouts.  He could be the biggest surprise.

#7 Pants On Fire (Napravnik / Breen) could do well with a modest pace allowing him to get first jump on the field as they head into the stretch.  He holds the fourth highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and three well-built, peaking workouts.  Should jockey, Rosie Napravnik, get him to the wire first, it will be the first Kentucky Derby win for a female jockey.  He could make history.

The Fillies Have the Oaks

Today the Kentucky Oaks, tomorrow the Kentucky Derby.  On the eve of KD 137 we look at the talented fillies in the Kentucky Oaks.  There is a fantastic undercard on Oaks day.

Churchill Downs Race 11 {Kentucky Oaks~G1~1 1/8 mile~3 year old~fillies~Stakes}
A lucky field of thirteen will go to the gate.  Only one of these gals has raced at this distance, the rest will be moving up in distance.  In a full, talented field like this there are several that could pull off the win.  The field is as wide open as the Derby will be tomorrow.

#3 Summer Soiree (Saez / Motion) has the speed to control the pace and run to victory.  She will be moving up from a mile distance with the highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and three superlative, peaking workouts.  She will attempt to wire this field.
$2 SHOW.

#9 Daisy Devine (Graham / McKeever) will be forwardly placed ready to strike at the top of the stretch.  She has a comparatively decent last out speed number, a five race progression in a five race career, and four sensational, peaking workouts.  It should be noted that jockey, James Graham, brings his game to a top level on big race days.  This gal is one of the few on today's card that could pull off an upset.
$2 SHOW.

#6 Zazu (Rosario / Sadler) this gal looks in beautiful form ready to challenge with the third highest last out speed number, a three race progression and four stamina inducing workouts prepping her for the distance.  She will challenge swiftly in the stretch.
$2 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests

#12 Plum Pretty (M. Garcia / Baffert) is another that could post the win.  She has the highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and four endurance peaking workouts.  Despite the outside post don't count this filly out.

#1 Joyful Victory (Smith / L. Jones) will be the favorite with a couple of decent last out speed numbers with wins to point to.  She is holding a four race progression and has posted two robust workouts.  She will be tracking the pace and saving ground near the rail.

#4 Kathmanblu (Leparoux / McPeek) is another that will be in the hunt for the big purse.  She has the second highest (tie)  overall speed number, a couple of decent last out speed numbers and two solid workouts.  She could also launch a strong closing effort at the top of the stretch.

It's Derby Weekend

While some are calling this years KD 137 field weak, we feel that all twenty of the Derby contenders are still developing three year-olds.  This will be one of the most exciting Kentucky Derby races in recent memory.

There is absolute parity in this field.  It is not a stretch to say that the probable odds of there being a photo finish are 2-1.  And those are the shortest odds you are likely to encounter for KD 137.  We predict that the favorite will go off at the highest Derby odds in this century.  The piquancy builds.

Meanwhile back in Hollywood.  Today we look at a nice little Turf sprint involving three year-olds.

Hollywood Park Race 5 { 6 furlongs~Turf~3 year old~Claiming}
A decent crop of seven will make the start in this Turf sprint.  Not one of the group has sprinted this Turf distance nor have they traversed over the Hollywood Park Turf.  There will be a nice balance speed, pressers, trackers, and closers.

#3 Courtside (T. Baze / Sadler) has a very slight edge with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and four powerful, peaking workouts.  He should be forwardly placed.
$2 SHOW.

#2 Dancing At Dark (Quinonez / Sadler) will be one of the challengers with the second highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and four fabulous, peaking workouts.  Should be closing in the stretch.
$2 SHOW.

#6 Chinese Praise (Pedroza / Miller) will also challenge with the third highest last out speed number at 110 years more than this distance and three hearty workouts.  He should be sitting in wait off the pace.
$2 SHOW.

Another Wagering Interest

#1 Luckarack (Talamo / Mullins) will be coming off a Turf route with a decent speed number and has put in two solid workouts.  One to watch.

May Day at Hollywood

As we close out this weeks horse racing weekend, be sure to take some time to reflect and get some pre-race handicapping in for the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby next Saturday.  There is parity in the field and it will be a grandiose event.

Today we look at a Stakes sprint at Hollywood Park.

Hollywood Park Race 8 {Time To Leave~5 furlongs~3 year old Up~fillies/mares~Stakes}
A nice field of seven speedsters go to the gate for this race.  All are trimming off at least a fulong from their last outing.  This promises to be a very fast race.

#4 Saint Isabelle (Bejarano / Puype) looks ready to swiftly dispatch these gals with the second highest (tie) last out speed figure, a two race progression and two strong workouts.
$2 SHOW.

#7 Shakenwithanolive (Rosario / Diodoro) will be one of the challengers on the front end with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and one solid workout.
$2 SHOW.

#1 Irish Gypsy (Smith / Baffert) looks ready to run after an extended layoff with one of the best workout tabs we have seen in recent months.  She holds a decent speed number over the surface and is the only closer in the group.  Should the pace melt down, she is the one capable of picking up the pieces.
$2 SHOW.
