Superfecta Sunday down in New Orleans

We go into Superfecta Sunday capping off not only an exciting weekend of racing, but a great month of racing. More will undoubtedly come. Today we look at a highly competitive Turf route.

Fair Grounds Race Course Race 6 {1 1/16 mile~TURF~4 year-old Up~Allowance Optional Claiming}

A strong group of ten will take to the green in this full field Turf feature. There is enough speed to keep and honest pace. Speed numbers are relatively close. Most in here are grizzled Turf veterans. It should be a spectacular race. Our task is to link together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket.

#11 Trend (Geroux / Stidham) should share favoritism with the third highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and one dynamite workout. He enjoys the Fair Grounds Turf course with a 50% in the money record. He should be tracking and closing efficiently.

#4 Purely Boy (Albarado / Maker) should be the other favorite with the highest last out speed number and three superb workouts. He is coming out of a stakes event prior to a very brief layoff. This guy should be fresh and ready to close.

#3 Cartoon (Reznikov / Vashchenko) could surprise with a continued improvement. This lad has landed in the money in all four of his races. He holds a couple of good last out speed numbers, a two race progression, and two solid workouts. Tracking the pace closely, he should get first jump on the leaders. He is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

#2 Candy Gran (Bridgmohan / McKeever) should contend with the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and three stout workouts. He will be stretching out to this distance and should be running just off the pace.

Stakes Saturday in Texas

On this Stakes Saturday we take a peek at a late one, observing a classic Turf race in the great state of Texas.

Sam Houston Race Park Race 8 {John B. Connally Turf Cup~G3~1 1/2 mile~TURF~4 year-old Up~Graded Stakes}

A great group of nine Turfers will make their way to the gate for this classic Turf distance. There is limited speed signed on which might make for a controlled pace. Those that have traversed this distance have all done well and will be the favorites. The balance of the field will be stretching out for the first time. Speed numbers are relatively close. It should be a very exciting night race.

#6 Big John B (Rosario / D'Amato) comes in from California ready to run. He holds the highest speed number at the distance, a couple of very good last out speed numbers and three endurance building workouts. With the right pace he should be able to close this field down. A son of Hard Spun he holds fourteen career wins.

#8 Kaigun (Bravo / Casse) will challenge with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two solid peaking workouts. Furlong Friday on the Turf at Fair Grounds

Thank goodness it's Furlong Friday. Today we venture into New Orleans for a Turf sprint.

Fair Grounds Race Course Race 8 {5 1/2 furlongs~TURF~4 year-old Up~fillies/mares~Claiming}

A good filed of eleven gals will take to the grass in this Turf dash. There is an abundance of speed which may heat up the pace significantly. Speed numbers for these gals are fairly close. It should be an exciting Turf sprint.

#7 Bissectrisa (Graham / Amoss) might benefit from a frothy pace with the fourth highest last out speed number and a five race progression. This gal loves the Fair Grounds course recording a 60% in the money record over it. She should be tracking the pace ready to strike going into the stretch.

#11 Spring Formal (Murrill / Rodriguez) should contend with the second highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and one stout workout. She too loves the Turf, the distance and the Fair Grounds course. This is another gal that will relish tracking a heated pace.

A Turf Start to Our Horse Racing Weekend

To start our horse racing weekend we look at a splendid Turf route in sunny Southern California.

Santa Anita Park Race 7 {1 1/8 mile~TURF~4 year-old Up~fillies/mares~Optional Claiming}

A fine group of ten gals will hit the green in this competitive Turf event. There is enough speed to maintain an honest pace. Speed numbers are relatively close. A handful have not yet attempted this distance. It should be a very good race on the first day of the 2016 NHC.

#6 Margaret Reay (Van Dyke / Proctor) should be able to capture the victory with the highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and two stout workouts. She has the tactical speed to stay the course as the pace develops. This gal also holds the highest speed number of the group at this distance.

AE #11 Can Can Babe (Garcia / Jacobson) should contend if she draws in as the also eligible. This gal is coming off two wins in a row. She holds the second highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and four hearty workouts. Expect her to be forwardly placed ready to romp.

Superfecta Sunday Turf

We go to the Turf for our Superfecta Sunday down in the "Big Easy".

Fair Grounds Race 8 {1 mile~Turf~3 year-old~LA~Optional Claiming}

A good crop of three year olds will hit the grass in this mile optional claimer. There is enough speed to keep the pace very honest. Speed numbers indicate that it should be a very competitive contest. It appears the whole field is in good form. Our task is to thread together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta Box ticket.

#3 Cajun Kitten (Mena / Calhoun) could be tough to beat as he gets on the preferred surface of all Kitten's Joy progeny. He won his first and only start in a wet dirt sprint scoring a decent speed figure. This lad has put in two hearty peaking workouts. Should the pace heat up, he should bust it loose in the stretch. He is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

#2 Extra Credit (Geroux / Cox) will challenge with the second highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and three robust workouts. This guy should be forwardly placed ready to strike. He is one of three in here to achieve a victory at this distance.

#1 Mageez (Valenzuela / Hutchinson) should contend with the highest last out speed number and a six race progression. He is hitting the grass for the first time with a 83% overall in the money record. This colt has recorded the highest speed number at the distance, albeit on dirt.

#11 Kid Creole (Graham / Brinkman) should be in the mix with the fourth highest (tie) last out speed number and a three race progression. He has the tactical speed to mold nicely into the pace seeking an opening to spurt out. This gelding seems to enjoy both the surface and the Fair Grounds course.

Let's Go Long on Stakes Saturday

Stakes Saturday brings us a outstanding marathon Turf contest to look at.

Gulfstream Park Race 9 {H. Allen Jerkens Stakes~2 miles~TURF~4 year-old Up~Stakes}

A nice field of seven will gallop over the grass in this marathon Turf route. There is no speed to speak of.  Consequently, expect it to be run Euro-style with a gallant quickening going into the stretch. Only two have competed at this distance. Going Downhill for Furlong Friday

On this Furlong Friday, we take in a nice downhill Turf race with the San Gabriel Mountains at the backdrop.

A wonderful collection of ten will journey up the hill and launch on down in an attempt win their first race. There is ample speed to insure an honest pace. Speed numbers are fairly close. There are a couple of first time starters and a number with extended layoffs. It should be a highly competitive race.

#1 Clickjab (Van Dyke / Puype) could have the advantage with the second highest last out speed number and four superlative workouts. He holds the second highest speed number on the downhill run. Coming off a longer layoff out of a more competitive maiden race, he should be ready to run well from a tracking position

We start off our horse racing weekend by taking in a sweet Maiden Turf mile race down in warm Florida.

A good crop of ten gals will hit the green in this early on the card Maiden Special Weight race. Speed appears to be on the inside with the rest tracking whatever pace develops. Superfecta Sunday at Lovely Santa Anita

Superfecta Sunday already.
Today we take in a very competitive Turf stakes race at that "Great Race Place", Santa Anita.

Santa Anita Park Race 7 {Astra Stakes~1 1/2 mile~TURF~4 year old Up~fillies/mares~Stakes}

A super competitive group of nine will vie for the win in this classic Turf distance. It comes up short on speed. It can be reasonably expected to see these gals lope along around the course until a final quickening into the stretch run. Speed numbers are fairly close making for a contentious event. Over half the field was bred outside of the USA. Three of these gals come from the lineage of the great Turf sire Galileo [IRE]. Our task is to string together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket. It could be the most exciting Turf race of the day.

#2 Gaga A [URU] (T. Baze / Drysdale) could go off at the favorite having already won at this distance over the Santa Anita course. She holds the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and four stamina producing workouts. This gal is coming off an extended layoff and should fire fresh.

#6 Energia Fribby [BRZ] (Gutierrez / Drysdale) should challenge with the third highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and four superb workouts. She has competed well at this distance out of country, securing a 66% in the money record. This lady loves the surface and appears to enjoy the Santa Anita course.

#7 Princess Charm [IRE] (Talamo / Sadler) should make a go of it with a couple of decent last out speed numbers and three robust workouts. Going the longer distance may provide the wake up call this daughter of Rip Van Winkle [IRE] needs to improve upon her overall in the money record of 50%. She is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

Stakes Saturday at the Fair Grounds

The road to the 2016 Kentucky Derby begins in earnest today as we take in a tremendous grade three in good old New Orleans.

Fair Grounds Race Course Race11 {LeComte~G3~1 mile 70 yards~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

A solid field of ten Kentucky Derby aspirants will saunter over to the gate in the hopes of grabbing some much needed Derby points. There is some speed that should get a modest pace going. The speed numbers are fairly close, but with those embarking on their three year-old season, improvements leaps can happen at anytime. It should be a great and exciting edition of the LeComte.

#5 Dolphus (B. Hernandez / Sharp) might take another step forward today with the third highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two sound workouts. This lad has already landed in the money in his two career starts over the Fair Grounds track. A son of Lookin at Lucky, he should be forwardly placed ready to rush into the stretch.

#10 Pinnacle Peak (Geroux / Stidham) should challenge as one of the more experienced runners in the field. Oaklawn Park opens today down in Hot Springs, Arkansas and we take a look at a competitive stakes race.

A talented group of eight is expected to go to the gate. There is plenty of speed to insure a fast pace. Speed numbers are close making for a contentious race. Most in here are coming into with brief to lengthy layoffs. It should be a great stakes race.

#7 Durango (Hamilton / Morse) should be the favorite and could go on to take this race. She is by far the fastest filly in the race posting the highest speed number at the distance and the highest last out speed number at a slightly longer distance. She has put in three strong peaking workouts prepping for this race. She should share the lead on the front end.

#2 Above Fashion (Rocco / Faucheux) should challenge with the third highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and one modest workout. We begin our horse racing weekend in the Southern California sun.

This lad holds the highest speed number at the distance as well as over the Santa Anita Turf. With the right pace, he should come around the bend with a quick close.

Superfecta Sunday in New Orleans

On this Superfecta Sunday we take in a competitive sprint at historic Fair Grounds Race Course.

Fair Grounds Race 7 {6 furlongs~4 year-old Up~Allowance Optional Claiming}

A good group of seven runners will go to the gate in this sprint allowance. There are a number of forwardly placed types in here to make it a reasonable pace. Speed numbers are relatively close giving it any horse a chance for the win. Our task is to string together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket. It should be a very good race.

#6 Street Moxie (B. Hernandez / Sharp) might have a slight edge with an o.k. speed number in a more competitive event and three solid workouts. He is 75% in the money from eight starts. Expect him to be forwardly placed close to the pace. He is our Bronze Horseshoe selection on this Superfecta Sunday.

#7 Ruble (Bridgmohan / Shirer) should challenge with the highest (3-way tie) last out speed number, a four race progression, and three superb workouts. This lad is another that should be forwardly placed. He loves the Fair Grounds track and excels at this distance.

#5 Bourbon Cowboy (Mena / R. Scherer) will contend with the third highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and four seriously good workouts. This guy should be taken back to track the pace. He is another that cherishes the Fair Grounds track.

#1A McQ (Albarado / Barnett) should be in the hunt for the win with the second highest speed number and one good workout. He shares the highest speed number at the distance and is 66% in the money at same. This gelding should be running close to the pace.

Stakes Saturday at Santa Anita

Already the second Saturday of a fast moving year. On this Stakes Saturday we look at a fine stakes race on the road to the Derby.

Santa Anita Park Race 6 {Sham~G3~1 mile~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

A equally talented group of eight will go to the gate in this early on the road to the Derby race. Speed numbers are this/close making the race available for any of these lads to take. There is enough speed to keep an honest pace. It should be a great race at the "Great Race Place".

#9 Collected (M. Garcia / Baffert) looks to have a minimal edge with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and five superb peaking workouts. This lad will be making his first dirt start after being in the money in his two career starts on the Turf. A son of City Zip, he should be forwardly placed.

#5 Semper Fortis (Fallon / O'Neill) should challenge with the second highest (3-way tie) last out speed number, a three race progression, and two hearty workouts. This son of Distorted Humor should close well into a solid pace.

Furlong Friday at the Big "A"

We go to the dirt for Furlong Friday in New York.

Aqueduct Race 7 {6 furlongs~3 year-old~Fillies~Starter Allowance}

A talented group of nine three year-old gals will hit the dirt in speedy fashion. And there is enough speed in this one to create a smoking pace. Speed numbers for these lightly raced gals are extremely close making for a superbly competitive event. Virtually all scored a victory in their last race. This could be the most exciting race on the Big "A" card.

#8 Head Shrinker (G. Saez / Imperio) looks ramped up to grab this one with the second highest (tie) last out speed number, a five race progression, and three stellar peaking workouts. She should travel gracefully near the front end.

#6 Kentucky Road (Carmouche / Toscano) appears to be in good form with the third highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and two robust workouts. She has the tactical speed to stay the course heading into the stretch.

#2 Manhattan Special (I. Ortiz / Schettino) should contend with a hearty last out first time win. She has put in three excellent workouts that include two bullets. This gal should be forwardly placed ready to strike in the stretch.

First Superfecta Sunday of 2016

We stay on a Santa Anita for the first Superfecta Sunday of the year.

Santa Anita Park Race 6 {7 furlongs~3 year-old~fillies~Maiden Special Weight}

A talented group of nine fillies will break from the gate in this maiden special weight race. There are a few forwardly placed types in here to maintain a smooth pace. All have great pedigrees. A couple of first time starters will round out the field. Speed numbers for those that have ran are fairly close. Our task is to knit together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta Box ticket.

#1 Faithfully (Bejarano / Baffert) is a first time starter for world class connections. She was purchased for $750k. This daughter of Smart Strike will be looking for the win at first asking. In preparation she has put in four powerful peaking workouts.

#2 Edgy Girl (Gutierrez / O'Neill) is making her third career start and appears ready for a break through coming off a mile route in her last. She looks to be in good form with her last two in the money starts. This gal has put in two fine workouts. She is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.
$2 SHOW.

#6 Audacious Angel (Stevens / Truman) should contend with the third highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and five spectacular peaking workouts. She is the only one of this crew to cover the Santa Anita track.

#7 Really a Gem (F. Perez / Dominguez) should be in the mix with the fourth highest last out speed number in her first start finishing fourth. She has put in one endurance workout prepping in the last thirty days.

Stakes Saturday at Sensational Santa Anita

On the second day of the New Year, we take in a stellar Turf Stakes race in sunny Southern California.

Santa Anita Park Race 8 {San Gabriel~G2~1 1/8 mile~TURF~4 year-old Up~Graded Stakes}

A superb field of eleven will take to the grass in this feature stakes race. There is some speed to insure an honest pace. Speed figures are reasonably close making it a competitive event. All are coming off a brief freshening. These lads have all raced over the Santa Anita Turf except for one. It should be a great race.

#10 Chiropractor (Nakatani / Proctor) is in good form and should have the edge here. He holds the second highest (tie) last out speed number, a four race progression, and three solid workouts. This son of Kitten's Joy loves this distance and should get the pace required to launch his closing kick.

#2 Big John B (Bejarano / D'Amato) will challenge with the highest last our speed number, a two race progression, and three hearty workouts. He has the third highest speed number over the Turf which adds to his luster. This son of Hard Spun should launch a vigorous closing effort heading for home.

#5 Power Ped (Gutierrez / Drysdale) should contend sharing the second highest last ut speed number, working a three race progression, and putting in four stamina producing workouts. This son of Powerscourt [GB] should be forwardly placed ready to get first jump into the stretch.

#7 Bal a Bali [BRZ] (Prat / Mandella) should be in the mix as he had run longer distances in his native Brazil. He holds the fourth highest last out speed number and has put in three robust peaking workouts. A son of Put It Back, he should be tracking the pace ready to strike.

Furlong Friday in Florida

Off we go to sunny Florida for our Furlong Friday play.

Gulfstream Park Race 8 {6 furlongs~4 year-old Up~fillies/mares~Starter Optional Claiming}

A nice full field of ten will go to the gate in this featured sprint. There is enough speed to keep an enduring pace. Speed numbers are fairly close to make for a competitive event. It should be an exceptionally good race to wager and watch.

#5 Forest Funds (Navarro / R. Preciado) might have an edge with by far the highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and two superb workouts. She appears to enjoy this particular sprint distance as well as the Gulfstream track. She should be in the thick of the lead pack of runners.
$1 SHOW.

#2 Boheme de Lavi (Jaramillo / Gonzalez) should challenge with the second highest (tie) last out speed number and three workwomanlike works. Should the pace get frothy, she should have a key advantage with his closing style. She shows the highest speed number at the distance.

#1 Racen (Gaffalione / De Paulo) comes down from Canada looking to contend with this group. With solid connections and a superb effort two races ago coupled with three stellar peaking workouts, she looks ready to run well. She should be motoring close to the pace ready to score.

#4 Miss Wilby (Castellano / Vitali) comes in from Suffolk Downs with three wins in a row under her saddle. Her last two efforts produced decent speed numbers and she has put in three solid peaking workouts. This gal is another that should be among the forwardly placed herd.
