Spectacular Three For Thursday

The horse racing weekend is upon us again.  Today is three for Thursday as we look at one race at Aqueduct and two back to back features at Gulfstream.  We hope you have a spectacular Thursday!

Aqueduct Race 8 {Mommy Dear~6 furlongs~4 year old Up~fillies/mares~Stakes}
A field of six goes to the gate in this small stakes race.  All of these gals have a good chance to win.  Ocarson (Pennington / Reid) looks the best prepared.  She is 100% in the money at the distance with a decent last out speed number and three peaking workouts.  Hold That Prospect (Chavez / Gullo) will be the chief challenger holding the highest speed number at the distance along with the highest speed number last out.  Only one work in advance, though.  Magic Roberta (Jara / Lobo) is also 100% at the distance and has posted the best work out tab with four peaking workouts.  Let's play Aqueduct.

$2 WIN / SHOW:  #5 Ocarson
NO 10 CENT Superfecta for this race.

Gulfstream Race 7 {1 1/8 mile~Turf~4 year old Up~Allowance Optional Claiming}
This is a marvelous race with several in here that could win it.  Staying On(IRE) (Bravo / Clement) looks to improve on his second race in the states.  He shows a 100% in the money record at the distance and decent speed numbers across the board.  Staying On(IRE) also shows a nice two race progression and has posted two nice workouts.  The chief challenger will be Nownownow (Leparoux / Biancone) who has stellar speed numbers across the board and an extremely robust three peaking workout tab.  Rounding out the pursuers of the purse in this race will be Hunting (A. Garcia / McGaughey), Danak(IRE) (C. Velasquez / McLaughlin), and Wheels Up At Noon (Maragh / Pitts).  All show competitive speed numbers at the distance and have had superb workouts for this race.  Hunting will be going from dirt to turf in his first effort on the grass.  Let's play Gulfstream.

$2 SHOW:  #8 Staying On
$2 SHOW:  #2 Nownownow
10 CENT Superfecta:  #8 Staying On(IRE) / #2 Nownownow / #5 Hunting / #6 Danak(IRE), #7 Wheels Up At Noon.

Gulfstream Race 8 {7 furlongs~3 year old~Allowance}
This race could develop between two well prepared horses seeking derby dreams.  Afleet Express (J. Velazquez / Jerkens) is 100% in the money for his two races, sports strong speed numbers and a two race progression. He appears to love this track and has put in a decent workout.  Mine N Gems (Trujillo / Ward) looks solid in this spot.  He has superb speed numbers across the board, a two race progression, and three stout workouts.  The challenge to these two will come from another four well prepared horses.  Soaring Empire (Castro / Cambolati) has great speed numbers and is coming down in distance for this race coupled with three healthy workouts.  Kratisto (Desormeaux / Allen) is also coming down in distance from his last out along with two fiery peaking workouts.  He also benefits from the skilled turf warrior, Kent Desormeaux, in the irons.  Bricklayer (Castellano / Alexander) will go to the gate with the best workout tab of the group.  He has the highest speed number at the distance and is coming down in distance from his last.  Latigo Shore (Bravo / Zito) will be moving up in distance by a mere 110 yards, but has posted the highest last out speed number (tied with Mine N Gems).  He also shows a nice two race progression and three hearty workouts.  Let's give this exciting Gulfstream race a shot.

$2 SHOW:  #7 Afleet Express
$2 SHOW:  #12 Mine N Gems
10 CENT Superfecta:  #7 Afleet Express / #12 Mine N Gems / #2 Soaring Empire / #8 Kratisto, #5 Bricklayer, #9 Latigo Shore.

Gulfstream Park is the Place to Be

Today there should be sun shining down on Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida.  We will look at the Ft. Lauderdale, hopefully on the Turf.

Gulfstream Race 9 {Ft. Lauderdale~G3~1 1/16 mile~Turf~4 year old Up~Stakes}
This shapes up to be a greatly exciting race.  There are a good number in here that could post the victory.  We like Mambo Meister (Cruz / Gleaves) with a superior work out base, the highest last out speed number, and a nice race progression.  Jet Propulsion (Trujillo / Wolfson) has a high speed number at the distance coupled with two good works. He should be ready.  Danak(IRE) (A. Garcia / McLaughlin) will be making his third start in North America.  He has decent speed numbers and a peaking set of workouts in preparation for this race.  Like his chances over a good to firm turf.  Those that will threaten include Yates Black Cat (Desormeaux / Romans), Vacation (Leparoux / McGaughey), Society's Chairman (J. Lezcano / Attfield), and Wheels Up At Noon (Prado / Pitts). Of the group Yate's Black Cat looks to be fully prepared to run very well, especially with Kent Desormeaux aboard. Let's play Gulfstream.

$2 SHOW:  #11 Mambo Meister
$2 SHOW:  #5 Danak(IRE)
10 CENT Superfecta:  #11 Mambo Meister / #2 Yates Black Cat / #5 Danak(IRE) / #2 Jet Propulsion, #10 Wheels Up At Noon, #6 Vacation, #9 Society's Chairman

Metrics, Aqueduct and Gulfstream

We have put together some metrics for our performance over the last quarter when this blog was started.  Any good handicapper will keep track of their selections and the results. Making adjustments along the way and determining strengths, as well as weaknesses.  Here are a few basic performance metrics:

Overall Performance  107 races  24 wins (27%)  58 itm (55%)
Turf Sprints  33% itm (in the money)
Turf Routes  71% itm

As we review this we are going to make some adjusments in our wagering strategy.  You will recall that we had deployed a "rolling show parlay" strategy, but our results were as volatile as the stock market.  We will maintain the same budget allowance of no more than $5.00 per race.  However, we will now look at WIN/SHOW wagers on certain races, while staying on budget.
We will post more metrics on Wednesdays as we cull through the data.

Today we look at allowance races at Aqueduct and Gulfstream.

Aqueduct Race 8 {6 furlongs~4 year old Up~Allowance}
Looking at the past performances for this race, there are a few horses in here that could win.  We like the Linda Rice trained, Jess Not Jesse (Napravnik / Rice).  A decent last out speed number couple with the best workout tab of the group, puts this guy in the driver seat.  Montecore (Cohen / Klesaris) has the second highest speed number over the surface and has done well at the distance.  No workouts within the last thirty days gives us pause.  Ramblinggamblinman (Jara / R. Dutrow) shows a solid speed number at the distance and his workout tab is very strong.  He will be a factor.  Have You Ever (Luzzi / Jacobson) will be the speed of the group and may hold on for a small piece of the purse.  Buddy's Song (Dominguez / Levine) looks good from a jockey-trainer perspective and his workouts are solid. He will be in the race to the finish.  Let's play Aqueduct.

$2 WIN / SHOW:  #4 Jess Not Jesse
There is NO 10 CENT Superfecta for this race.

Gulfstream Race 7 {1 1/16 mile~Turf~4 year old Up~fillies/mares~Allowance}
A full field of twelve assembles for this race with and additional four "also eligible" horses sitting on the bench waiting to get into the race should any scratches occur.  The group of four waiting to gain entry look awfully good and well prepared for this race.  This solidly competitive field is a tough one to handicap.  Classical Fashion (C. Velasquez / Contessa) looks to have a very slight edge.  She shares the highest speed number at the distance with Obsequious (Maragh / Cray) and Blue Hill Bay (Saez / Everett).  Where Classical Fashion stands out is with a respectable last out speed number and a strong group of workouts.  Toocleverforwords (Castro / McGaughey) looks very solid with a good last out speed number and a good workout tab.  Speak Easy Gal (Castellano / Contessa) looks like she will do well with a strong last out speed number, solid race progression, and decent couple of workouts.  With Kent Desormeaux in the irons, Flaming Rose (Desormeaux / Coatrieux) cannot be ignored.  Desormeaux, in our opinion, is the best turf jockey in the country.  Flaming Rose has a nice race progression and is shifting from the all weather surface to turf. Will be a factor.  Girl Can Rock (Marquez / Orseno) will be moving up in distance, but seems to be well prepared for this race with a nice race progression and a good workout tab.  Let's make a great play at Gulfstream.

$2 SHOW:  #3 Classical Fashion
$2 SHOW:  #4 Flaming Rose
10 CENT Superfecta:  #3 Classical Fashion / #5 Toocleverforwords / #2 Speak Easy Gal, #4 Flaming Rose / #8 Girl Can Rock, #2, #4

Last Sunday's Results
Gulfstream R8. Our pick, Le Grand Cru, finished out of the money in 6th.  Superfecta went 2-1-9-7.
Not a very good start for 2010, our bankroll has fallen to $4.10.  We will supplement it with an additional $10.00 to support our new wagering strategy.

From Churchill to Hollywood

Another beautiful Fall day for Horse racing. We look at an allowance race at Churchill Downs and a stakes race at Hollywood Park.

Churchill Race 9 {1 1/2 mile~Turf~3 year old Up~Allowance}
We look at a nicely competitive race at a BC marathon distance. Five have done this distance before and a few others have worked favorably to finish well at the distance. Hidden Glance (Albarado / Howard) is primed and ready to go with decent speed numbers across the spectrum and three fine works. Though Ravensworth (Geroux / Mathews) has raced already ten times this year, this horse has a decent last out speed number and a couple of nice work outs leading up to this. Interesting that Florent Geroux comes in from Hawthorne for the mount. Kent Desormeaux is having a splendid year on the turf. Today he rides Tiger's Rock (Desormeaux / Pletcher). Tiger's Rock has had some nice race progressions and trainer, Todd Pletcher will have him ready here. Rounding out our money crew is Maccarib Pass (Mena / Maker). Maccarib Pass has had the best work outs of this bunch. Michael Maker is having a sensational year at all Kentucky tracks and it would not be a surprise if this one hits the wire first. Let's make our Churchill play.

$2 SHOW: #10 Hidden Glance
10 CENT Superfecta: #10 Hidden Glance / #4 Ravensworth / #9 Tiger's Rock / #5 Maccarib Pass

Hollywood {Moccasin Stakes~7 furlongs~2 year old~fillies}
You gotta love these youngsters when they step out onto the track. It seems that Miss Heather Lee (Gomez / Baffert) is head and hooves above this great group of fillies. Trainer, Bob Baffert, is doing exceedingly well with all his young charges as he has a 25% win record with the two year olds. Miss Heather Lee should notch another win for he and jockey, Garrett Gomez. Speaking of Baffert, Crisis of Spirit (Smith / Baffert) looks like she is ready to give Miss Heather Lee a run for her money. She has the highest last out speed number and two very nice works leading up to this. Bickerson's (Talamo / Breen) and Lt. Anne (Bejerano / Sadler) should round out the field. Let's make a Hollywood play.

$2 SHOW: #1 Miss Heather Lee
10 CENT Superfecta: #1 Miss Heather Lee / #6 Crisis of Spirit / #4 Bickerson's / #3 Lt. Anne

Please Enjoy a beautiful Sunday.

Mrs. Revere at Churchill

We take a look at only one race today. The Mrs. Revere at Churchill Downs.

Churchill Downs Race 9 {Mrs. Revere~G2~1 1/16 mile~Turf~3 year old~fillies}
This race has a full field of 14 with three waiting on the "Also Eligible" list to get into the competition. This race will be a highly competitive race with six holding most of the traits to make it into the winners circle. Romacaca (Baird / Miller) and Redreamit (Borel / McPeek) will be the early speed. If the pace does not heat up to badly, Romacaca may hold on for a chunk of the purse. She has the highest speed number at the distance. C.S. Silk (Torres / Romans) will take a pressing position behind these two speedsters and will pounce at the end. Hot Cha Cha (Graham / Sims) loves the Churchill turf course and figures to win this one. She is coming down in distance from her last race and has one good work out in preparation for this race. Jockey, James Graham, is second only to Kent Desormeaux for being in the money on the turf this year. If he can keep Hot Cha Cha out of traffic for the close we should see her in the winners circle. Miss World (Maragh / Clement) and Marys Follies (Desormeaux / Dutrow) both have excellent jockey/trainer combinations. They should be battling for a piece of the purse. Striking Dancer (Albarado / McPeek), Miss Keller (Da Silva / Attfield), and Keertana (Castanon / Proctor) all have strong last out speed numbers and solid works leading up to this. All three will be closing for home speedily. Let's make a nice Churchill play.

$2 SHOW: #7 Hot Cha Cha
$2 SHOW: #4 Striking Dancer
10 CENT Superfecta: #7 Hot Cha Cha / #1 C.S. Silk / #4 Striking Dancer / #10 Miss Keller, #11 Keertana.
