Memorial Day Observed 2012

A respectful Memorial Day to you.
This is the day we give thanks to those who have fought in our nation's battles and passed on well before their time.

The long weekend also marks the unofficail start of summer.  It will be a great summer of horse racing.  The Belmont Stakes are just a couple short weeks away and it could produce a true Champion in I'll Have Another.  We are looking forward to that Saturday, June 9th, 2012.
There is much more racing before that day.  Today we take a look at a nice Turf battle among three year-old fillies at that engrossing track, Belmont Park.

Belmont Park Race 7 {Sandspoint~G2~1 1/16 mile~inner TURF~3 year old~fillies~Stakes}
This will be an exciting Turf race with a field of eight all in contention for the win.  A lack of speed may hurt the deep closer, Somali Lemonade's chances.  It is possible that two may decide to take to the front in an attempt to pilfer the victory.  Both Better Lucky and Preach Tome Daddy like to be forwardly placed and may, by default, motor on the front end.  This could be a uniquely challenging race.

#8 Firehouse Red (Napravnik / Jones) could surprise the favorite with an honest pace up front.  She holds the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression and a terrific 86% in the money record over the Turf surface in seven starts.  A closer with some tactical speed, she could land in the winner's circle.
$1 WIN / $1 SHOW.

#3 Somali Lemonade (J. Velazquez / Matz) is the deserving favorite with the highest speed number at the distance and two robust workouts.  This gal will need a strong pace in order to close deeply.

Superfecta Sunday at Churchill Downs

A thrilling Preakness 137 was run yesterday.  It came down to the two stars of the race, Bodemeister and I'll Have Another, in the closing yards of the stretch.  I'll Have Another caught Bodemeister at the wire to keep his Triple Crown dreams alive.  Now it is on to Belmont which they don't call "Big Sandy" for nothin'.  It will be a very spectacular June 9th, 2012.  Place that date on your calendar.  We expect the undercard to be fabulous.

$2 WIN.

#9 I'll Have Another (Gutierrez / O'Neill) will challenge the speedster with a nice pressing attack.  The Kentucky Derby 138 winner holds the highest last out speed number, has a two race progression, and has put in an efficient workout in the last 30 days.  Should the front runner falter, this son of Flower Alley could capture the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Belmont Superfecta Sunday

KD 138 Thoughts

What a spectular running of the 2012 Kentucky Derby!
We have not witnessed a more impressive front runner as Bodemeister in many years.  This young colt took the field through sizzling fractions and as predicted melted down the other speedsters in the race.  He almost held on for the victory.  This son of Empire Maker ran is heart out with the most gallant second place finish ever.  Only caught at near the end by I'll Have Another who had a fluid ride under the cool hands of the young jockey, Mario Gutierrez.

It's interesting to note that none of the top professional handicappers, [Beyer, Crist, Byrne, Privman, Kristufek, and Illman], that we gain valuable insight from, had I'll Have Another as their top pick or for that matter in their groupings.  He was off the radar.

Another great Kentucky Derby goes into the record books.

Let's move on and try our handicapping skills on this Superfecta Sunday.

Belmont Park Race 8 {1 1/16 mile~TURF~3 year old Up~fillies/mares~NY~Allowance}
A field of ten will go off in this competitive Turf route.  It presents itself as a nice balance of running styles.  A swift pace should be prevalent.  We will attempt to cobble together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box.

#9 Notell (Dominguez / Heffner) has an edge with the second highest (tie) last out speed number, a two race progression, and one solid workout.  She should benefit from a quick pace.  We have to pick her as our Bronze horseshoe runner.
$2 SHOW.

#4 Elusive Rumour (Maragh / Albertrani) will challenge sharing the second highest last out speed number, showing a three race progression, and putting in three athletic workouts.  She should be forwardly placed ready to move.

#2 Satin Sheeks (Lezcano / Hushion) will be in the mix tracking the pace with the third highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and two hearty workouts.  She has the class and running style to break through with a win.

#3 Rodinia (Leparoux / Clement) will moving up in distance for superb connections.  She has a couple of decent last out speed numbers, a two race progression, and three vigorous workouts.  She could mount a pressing attack.

10 CENT Superfecta Box ($2.40)

#9 Notell  +  #4 Elusive Rumour  +  #2 Satin Sheeks  +  #3 Rodinia.

2012 Kentucky Derby 138

It has arrived.  The 138th running of the Kentucky Derby.  Scheduled to go off at 6:24 pm Eastern time.  This years running of the roses will be a spectacular race with any one of a bakers dozen having a chance to strut into the winners circle.

Churchill Downs Race 11 {Kentucky Derby 138~G1~1 1/4 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
A full field of twenty will line up for the greatest two minutes in sports.  The field has plenty of speed, overpowering speed which may set up well for those coming from off the pace.  It is encouraging to note that all running styles are represented in this Derby.  It will be an exhilerating KD 138.

#10 Daddy Nose Best (Gomez / Asmussen) has a very slight edge with the third highest speed number over the surface.  He holds the third highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and four vigorous workouts.  He appears to peaking for this race.  Trainer, Steve Asmussen has managed him well and should have him primed for the victory.
$2 WIN / $3 SHOW.

#15 Gemologist (Castellano / Pletcher) will challenge as the undefeated runner in this race.  He has done little wrong in his five race career, but it is exceptionally difficult to keep such a streak alive.  Ask the great Zenyatta.  This colt should sit close to the pace ready to launch a first strike on the leaders.  He holds the fourth highest (3-way tie) last out speed number, a five race progression, and two ruggedly strong workouts.  No question trainer, Todd Pletcher, has this guy wired for a superb race.
$2 PLACE / $2 SHOW.

#1 Daddy Long Legs (O'Donoghue / O'Brien) is a tracker coming out of the dreaded number one gate.  Despite the bad post, he will challenge this group of twenty superior quality horses.  He is coming in fresh off his victory in the UAE Derby at Meydan (Dubai) over the tapeta surface.  His racing post rating for that race compares favourably with the highest speed numbers in this field.  This Kentucky born son of Scat Daddy is working a four race progression.  His jockey- trainer combination is long on experience in some of the top races in Europe and beyond.  He should track and close mightily.
$2 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests

#6 Bodemeister (Smith / Baffert) is the fastest horse in the field having run triple-digit speed numbers in three of his four career starts.  There is some fast and furious speed in this year's Derby which may be his undoing.  The wiley veteran jockey, Mike Smith, may have to work the hardest of all to get this guy to the winners circle.  This young colt holds the highest last out speed number, is working a four race progression, and has put in three super swift workouts.  Trainer, Bob Baffert, has him well prepped.

#8 Creative Cause (Rosario / Harrington) looks ready to run a big race with a couple of exceptional last out speed numbers including the third best over the surface.  This son of Giant's Causeway is 100% in the money in an eight race career and has put in three robust, peaking workouts.  The colt could pull off a major upset.
