Fresh Arkansas Dirt

Today we take a peak at an Oaklawn Park race as the Arkansas Derby nears.  A great horse racing weekend is in store with many great races on the docket.

Oaklawn Park Race 10 {1 mile~3 year old Up~Allowance}
This has the appearance of being a very tight competition.  A field of nine will make their way on the the Oaklawn dirt.  There should be some pace in the race to set up for the closing types.

Sunland Derby Day

We close out our horse racing weekend with the always exciting Sunland Derby, capping a great weekend of stakes races.

Sunland Park Race 12 {Sunland Derby~G3~1 1/8 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
A nice competitive field of eleven will make the start in this annual Kentucky Derby prep.  The $800K purse will give the winner a ticket to KD 137. Such a win will provide enough graded earnings to place them mid-pack of the top twenty in graded earnings.

Not a single horse in this field has run this distance.  In fact, all but one have raced at the 1 1/16 mile distance.  Only one horse will be moving from a sprint to a route.  It appears the pace will be a middling one as there are no speedsters entered.  Half the field ships in for this event.  It should be an interesting and fun race to watch.

#11 Astrology (Leparoux / Asmussen) has a slight edge coming off a layoff with highest (3-way tie) speed number over the dirt surface.  He ran well as a two-year old and has put in four stellar, peaking workouts.  Certainly one of a group of six that could win this race.
$2 SHOW.

#7 Sinai (M. Garcia / Baffert) will challenge with the second highest (tie) last out speed number, a two race progression, and four supreme, peaking workouts.  This guy could control the pace and is capable of wiring the race.
$2 SHOW.

#1 Ruler on Ice (Valdivia / Breen) can also challenge with the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two hearty peaking workouts.  This guy will also challenge with his pressing running style.
$2 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests
#6 Supreme Ruler (Court / Fires) count on this colt to be in the hunt for the victory.  He holds the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two strong stamina-type workouts.  He will be closing in the stretch.

#3 Fusa Code (Shepperd / Asmussen)  is a threat to create an Asmussen produced exacta.  He won the Borderland Derby at this track last out with a decent speed number, has a three race progression, and has three hardy, peaking workouts.  He should track the pace.

#8 Nacho Saint (Bravo / Breen) is another capable of winning this competitive race.  He holds the highest speed number over the surface and has put in two solid, peaking workouts.  Another that will track the pace.

10 CENT Superfecta
#11 Astrology / #7 Sinai / #1 Ruler On Ice / #6 Supreme Ruler, #3 Fusa Code, #8 Nacho Saint.

A Great Saturday Stakes Day

A great Saturday filled with numerous stakes races across North America.  Additionally, today is Dubai World Cup day.  We will be watching the exciting races at the gorgeous Meydan Race Track in Dubai early this morning.

For today we look at two tremendously compettive KD 137 prep races at the Fair Grounds and Turfway Park.

Turfway Park Race 9 {Rushaway~1 1/16 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
While the purse in this race is only $100K, it is a great prep for the Lanes End in April.  The winner could go on to that race or another derby prep falling on that weekend in an effort to garner enough graded stakes earnings to land a slot in Kentucky Derby 137.  This field of nine could be described as a talented bunch of late bloomers.  Most are shippers coming into Florence, Kentucky for this annual feature with many going from Turf to synthetic.  There is not much pace which will make it a tactical race filled with "stateegery".

#2 Crimson China (A. Garcia / Motion) this lad will be moving from Turf to the synthetic with the second highest (3-way tie) last out speed number over a longer route, a three race progression,  and three sturdy workouts.  Will be attempting a third win in a row.
$2 SHOW.

#6 Swift Warrior (Castellano / Terranova) also has the second highest speed number over a Turf route.  He has posted four superb workouts and has a solid racing foundation of eleven races having been in the money 82% of the time.  Will challenge.
$2 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests
#4 DisFraz (Caramouche / Kenneally) looks very strong going into this race also with the second highest last out speed number; placing second to Crimson China in a longer Turf route.  He has a three race progression going and has put in three athletic workouts.

#7 The Ole Gen (Saez / Jones) is the only one moving from dirt to synthetic, but deserves a look with the highest last out speed number, a five race progression, and two swift workouts.

#3 St. Ivan (Lebron / Maker) could surprise with a couple of decent last out speed numbers and one solid workout.  He could be considered the track specialist of the group with two wins over the course.

10 CENT Superfecta
#2 Crimson China / #6 Swift Warrior / #4 DisFraz / #7 The Ole Gen, #3 St. Ivan.

Fair Grounds Race 10  {Louisianna Derby~G2~1 1/8 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
A beautifully balanced field of running styles makes this race compelling.  The field of thirteen will be aiming for the victory to punch their ticket to KD 137.  The second place finisher will earn $200K and will certainly be on the bubble for entrance into the KD 137 gate.  It can be reasonably expected that the graded earnings threshold to be at least $250K to get into this year's Kentucky Derby.

The field is filled with talented horses looking for the winners circle.  Five of the horses in the field already have graded earnings and the rest are looking for some.  Only two horses have raced at this distance.  This promises to be a very exciting race.

#4 Mucho Macho Man (Maragh / Ritvo) is the one to beat with the highest speed number at the distance as well as the highest last out speed number, a two race progression and three fierce workouts. He has a grade two win and two grade II places to his credit.
$1 WIN.

#9 Wilkinson (Gomez / Howard) will make a challenge with the fourth highest last out speed number with an intervening layoff, a two race progression, and four great, peaking workouts.  A grade two winner and 100% in the money over his five race career.
$1 PLACE / SHOW.

#11 Elite Alex (Borel / Ritchey) is one of the most promising Triple Crown nominees.  He figures to do well in this race with the third highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and two hearty, peaking workouts. Clearly one to watch.
$2 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests
#6 Machen (Prado / Howard) looks well prepped for this race with the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and four serious, peaking workouts.  He also has the second highest speed number over the dirt surface.

#1 Nacho Business (Bravo / Breen) is the only other runner that has competed at this distance.  He should be tracking the pace and appears ready with two sinewy, peaking workouts.  Should surprise.

10 CENT Superfecta
#4 Mucho Macho Man / #9 Wilkinson / #11 Elite Alex / #6 Machen, #1 Nacho Business.

Friday's Results

Back to the Turf at Fair Grounds

Another beautiful day for horse racing.  Today we go to the Turf at Fair Grounds for a terrific allowance feature.

Fair Grounds Race 9 {1 1/16 mile~Turf~4 year old Up~fillies/mares~Allowance}
A very solid field of twelve will make the start in this Turf feature.  It is a relatively closely matched bunch.  Lack of speed will make the race very interesting.

#9 Wild Strike (Jacinto / Frostad) is unquestionably the one to beat with the second highest last out speed number and three hearty workouts.  She appears to have good tactical speed which gives her the edge in this group.
$1 WIN / SHOW.

#1 Backside Blackie (Lanerie / Glyshaw) will challenge with the highest (tie) last out speed number, a three race progression, and one solid workout.
$1 PLACE / SHOW.

#4 Cruisin'n thebridle (Graham / Asmussen) is coming off an extended layoff and has raced well after previous layoffs.  She holds the highest speed number at the distance and has put in four great, peaking workouts.
$2 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests
#10 Distorted Love (Mena / Pitts) looks ready to move up in distance also with the highest last out speed number and three athletic workouts.

#11 Dandyna (Hernandez / Howard) should be in the mix with a decent last out speed number and three robust, peaking workouts.  Look for her heading into the stretch.

10 CENT Superfecta

On this fine Sunday, the last day of our horse racing weekend, we look at a very competitive Turf race at lovely Santa Anita Park.

Santa Anita Race 4 {San Luis Rey~G2~1 1/2 mile~Turf~4 year old Up~Stakes}
A very fine Turf race featuring a field of eight.  Looked at the conditions and could not find a clause that indicated that the horses had to be foreign bred.  Six of them are, with two Kentucky breds in the field.  An equally matched group should bring some excitement to this marathon Turf race.  Unfortunately the race will have very little pace.

#1 Hamish Hy (Gomez / Sherman) seems to have an edge with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two serious workouts. Is the class of the field.
$2 SHOW.

A superlative field of nine derby aspirants line up for this annual Derby prep race.  A perfect blend of speed, pressers, trackers, and closers will make the race one to watch.

Santa Anita in March

Once again we start an exciting horse racing weekend on this theatrical Thursday.  Today we look at a claiming race at beautiful Santa Anita.

Santa Anita Race 5 {1 mile~Turf~fillies/mares~4 year old Up~Claiming}
There is no standout in this race and it seems to have parity.  In the field of eleven there are a couple speedy types, a couple of trackers, and the rest all closing types.  This will be a very good wagering race.

Selections
#9 Beautiful American (Gomez / Hollendorfer).  Second highest last out speed number in a longer route race, two robust workouts, and a two race progression puts this gal at the top.  She can be expected to control the pace and is well rested with a short layoff.

Ain't It Good to be Back Online Again

After a nice 45 day layoff we are happy to begin, in earnest, our two year old campaign to build a bigger bankroll.  Our horse racing weekend begins tomorrow, Thursday.  Today we provide some observations and thoughts along the Kentucky Derby 137 trail.

Dash to the Derby

While there are a number of top caliber horses looking at a Kentucky Derby 137 start by virtue of their graded earnings already accumulated, many of the 365 Triple Crown (TC) nominated horses are working hard and racing their hearts out chasing the dream.

Here are some observations on some of the races this past weekend in which some of the Triple Crown nominated horses competed.

Gulfstream Park Race 6, a one mile on the dirt, maiden special weight, featured a number of TC nominees. San Pablo won in impressive fashion from gate to wire. Point of Entry finished 2nd and Meister Singer finished 3rd. Both looked pretty good. Sequoia Warrior flattened in the stretch and King Alpha finished off the board.

At Fairgrounds Race 5 was an Optional Claimer going one mile 70 yards for three year olds. TC nominee, Lumberyard Jack, was not a factor.

The Turf Paradise Derby (1 1/16 mile on the dirt) was one by a bomber named Beer Meister at 40-1. Love the name, but the connections did not nominate this fella. The TC nominated runners all did well with Twice the Appeal finishing 2nd, Indian Winter finishing 3rd, and Mr. Artistic M.D. finishing 4th. It was an exciting race to watch.

One of the big KD 137 prep races was the Hutcheson Stakes (G2-7 furlongs-dirt) which was won by Flashpoint, trained by Richard Dutrow. The Todd Pletcher trained, Travelin Man, finished 2nd. Little Drama finished 3rd and another Pletcher trained horse, Razmataz finished 4th. A lot of head scratching is going on after the finish of this race.

The most important KD 137 prep of the weekend had to be the Fountain of Youth (1 1/8 mile—grade two—on the dirt). Kiaran McLaughlin trained Soldat won in fine form. Gourmet Dinner who already has his ticket punched for the Derby finished 2nd. There was some disappointment in To Honor and Serve’s third place finish. Bowman’s Causeway [CAN] is one to watch finishing fourth.

The only TC nominated horse in the Borderland Derby (1 1/16 mile—on dirt) at Sunland Park won it smoothly. The Steve Asmussen trained, Fusa Code, should now move on to the Sunland Derby in an effort to achieve his connections derby dream.

As with most horse racing weekends it was fun and exciting. We are that much closer to the Kentucky Derby 137 on Saturday, May 7, 2011.
