Superfecta Sunday at the Big "A"

Ah, its Kentucky Derby week and the excitement builds toward the first Saturday in May.  Today we take a look at a nice Stakes race at the Big "A".

Aqueduct Race 9 {NY Stallion Stakes~6 1/2 furlongs~3 year old~fillies~Stakes}
A really nice field of eight will hit the dirt in speedy fashion.  Three quarters of the field have the need for speed in this feature race.  It could be the ones that sit right off the pace that come through.  Our task is to knit a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket.

#5 Storied Lady (Castellano / Hertler) should benefit from a sizzling pace.  She holds the third highest (tie) last out speed number at a route, a five race progression, and two solid workouts.  This gal will be tracking the pace ready to strike.

#4 Bella the Bandit (I. Ortiz / L. Rice) should challenge with a forwardly placed effort.  She shares the third highest last out speed number at a sprint, has stitched a two race progression, and has put in two sound peaking workouts.  This filly is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

#2 Henry's Gal (C. Velasquez / Rodriguez) is likely to go off as the clear favorite with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two hearty workouts.  This gal will show significant speed and could wire this field.

#7 Miss Narcissist (Alvarado / L. Rice) is coming off an extended layoff, but should do just fine.  Prior to the layoff she sported the second highest last out speed number and has put in three robust workouts prepping for her return to racing.  She too will show speed.

Stakes Saturday in Texas

On this Stakes Saturday, we go to the great of Texas to take in a mile.

Lone Star Park Race 8 {Texas Mile~G3~1 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
A stellar group of nine will go to the gate in this annual graded stakes race.  There is several tons of speed in this one which could open it for a horse coming from off the pace.  Nearly all in here are coming into this one fresh from thirty day layoffs.  It should be a great race.

#6 Bourbon Courage (Goncalves / Gorder) could benefit greatly from a speedy pace.  He holds the highest last our speed number from a longer route, a three race progression, and two sound workouts.  This son of Lion Heart should track the pace and close furiously.

#4 Forest Mouse (Eikleberry / Dominguez) has the tactical speed to stay with this group and pounce in the stretch.  He holds the fourth highest (tie) speed number at a longer route and has put in three top flight workouts.  This son of Teton Forest has won his last three races.

#9 Proud Strike (Berry / Asmussen) should challenge with two improving last out speed numbers, a three race progression, and three solid peaking workouts.  This son of Smart Strike will be closing swiftly going into the stretch.

Keeneland Closes Out Spring

We go into the weekend before the first Saturday in May taking in the Keeneland finale.

Keeneland Race 9 {Elkhorn~G2~1 1/2 mile~TURF~4 year old Up~Stakes}
A highly talented field of fourteen will go to the grass in this feature race.  Some of the top distance Turfers converge on the Keeneland green for this one.  There is a few forwardly placed types that should keep the pace rolling.  It should be quite a race with any one of these fellas capable of pulling off the victory.

#5 Temeraine (Lezcano / Proctor) has a slight edge with the fourth highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and three premier peaking workouts.  He holds the third highest speed number at the distance and is 75% in the money from four starts at same.

#13 Forte Dei Marmi [GB] (Graham / Attfield) looks to improve with his second start of the year.  He has run a couple of decent last out speed numbers, holds a two race progression, and has put in two sharp workouts. Also, he holds the highest speed number at the distance.  This lad should be in a nice tracking position ready to roll.

#6 Suntracer (Albarado / Block) should close well with the proper pace. He has a couple of decent last out speed numbers, holds the second highest speed number at the distance and has produced a significant bullet workout.

Bewitching Keeneland

We begin our horse racing weekend with a fantastic Turf race from Kentucky.

Keeneland Race 8 {Bewitch~G3~1 1/2 mile~TURF~4 year old Up~fillies/mares~Stakes}
A great group of twelve will take to the green in this annual affair. There is a little bit of speed to keep the pace honest, though the forwardly placed may have an advantage if they run modestly.  The majority have gone this distance and those that haven't show the potential to make it.  This should be a very exciting race.

#9 Romantica [GB] (Rosario / Mott) is coming off an extended layoff, but should seek the victory.  She holds the highest last out speed number, was working a two race progression, and has put in three strong peaking workouts.  This gal is a daughter of the great Turf sire, Galileo [IRE].

#11 Aigue Marine [GB] (Graham / Clement) should challenge with a couple of excellent last out speed numbers and one solid workout.  She holds the second highest speed number at the distance.  Also a daughter of Galileo [IRE], she should be forwardly placed ready to pounce.

Gulfstream Superfecta Sunday

We book into Superfecta Sunday as the excitement builds for KD 140.  Today we look at  a speedy Turf sprint down in South Florida.

Gulfstream Park Race 8 {Safari Queen Stakes~5 furlongs~TURF~3 year old Up~Stakes}
A robust field of nine will take to the green in this afternoon feature.  There is plenty of speed which should make the race speedy.  The field is closely comparable in terms of speed numbers and most have gone this short distance.  It should be a very good race.  Our task is to cobble together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket.

#3 Madam Giry (Castro / Gambolati) has the edge as she comes of a freshening.  She holds the highest last out speed number and has put in two solid works.  She also holds the highest speed number at the distance having raced it eleven times securing a 72% in the money record.  The pace should benefit her running style.

#1 Angel's South (Chamafi / Iadisernia) should challenge as she comes off a Turf mile in her last which puts her with the third highest (tie) last out speed number.  She has put in two serious peaking workouts prepping for this one.  This gal should be forwardly placed ready to pounce.

#4 Coursegold (Bravo / Hennig) should contend with an o.k. last out speed number at a longer sprint and three top-notch peaking workouts.  She should also benefit from a fast pace.  In addition to loving the Gulfstream Turf course having hit the board in all five of her starts on it, she loves the surface in general with an 84% in the money record from thirteen starts.  She is our Bronze Horseshoe runner.

Hawthorne's Illinois Derby 2014

With the Kentucky Derby 140 only fourteen days away we take a look at the fabulous Illinois Derby at Hawthorne Race Course in the inner ring suburbs of Chicago.  This race should be on the Derby trail as it is an excellent prep for horses going on to Churchill Downs.

Hawthorne's long, magnificent stretch is a test of any horse's stamina and endurance.  Perhaps one day it will be in the Derby point system, though the race date would have to be moved up a couple of weeks.

This years running of the Illinois Derby promises to be exceptionally exciting.

Hawthorne Race 9 {Illinois Derby~G3~1 1/8 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
A fine group of eight runners will take to the Hawthorne dirt in an attempt to grab a share of the $550K prize.  Lack of any true speed could cause this group to have a significant quickening going into the stretch.  With one exception, the favorite, Midnight Hawk, all speed numbers match up very closely. It should be an extremely exciting race on this Stakes Saturday.

#3 Midnight Hawk (M. Garcia / Baffert) is the deserved favorite with the highest last out speed number (the only triple digit among the group), a five race progression, and two solid workouts.  His tracking style will keep him in this one until the wire.  This is his race to win.

#8 Class Leader (Graham / Howard) should challenge with the second highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and four stellar peaking workouts.  He can be expected to be in the thick of the tracking group ready to move swiftly through the stretch.

On this Superfecta Sunday we take a look at a graded stakes race for the girls down in Lexington, Kentucky.

Velazquez / Pletcher) could have the edge with her great running style versatility.  She holds the second highest last out speed number which was at this distance and has put in two stout workouts.  This will be her debut over the Keeneland poly, but pedigree suggest she'll like it.

Today we look in on one of the best Derby preps along the Kentucky Derby trail,  The Arkansas Derby

A smashing field of eight will go to the gate.  There is plenty of speed to keep a swift pace throughout.  All but one will be stretching out to this distance for the first time.  The speed numbers registered by these fellas are closely comparable.  It should be a fantastic running of the Arkansas Derby.

#3 Tapiture (Rosario / Asmussen) has the edge with the highest last out speed number, a five race progression, and two superb peaking workouts.  This son of Tapit is 100% in the money in six career starts.  He should stay close to the pace, ready to strike going into the stretch.

#6 Commissioner (Smith / Pletcher) will challenge as the only entrant who has gone this distance and acquitted himself nobly. He holds a couple of decent last out speed numbers, is working a two race progression, and two sincere peaking workouts.  Bear in mind this son of A.P. Indy is 100% in the money at this distance.  He should be able to close quickly when the pace heats up.

#7 Conquest Titan (Borel / Casse) could surprise with a couple of decent last out speed numbers, a four race progression, and three sensational peaking workouts.  This son of Birdstone should not have any problem getting this distance.  Stepping out to another improvement for this lad and his tracking / closing running style.

We go into Friday to observe a high caliber race with a short field.

Sprinting to the Horse Racing Weekend

Thursday begins our horse racing weekend.  Today we look at a fantastic graded stakes sprint to start off a great weekend of horse racing.

Oaklawn Park Race 9 {Count Fleet Sprint Handicap~G3~6 furlongs~3 year old Up~Stakes}
A highly rated field of six will make the start in this grade three.  There is plenty of speed and those that like to press the pace to make this a hot pace.  Four in here have it the triple digit speed number and the other two are very close to that milestone.  It should be an extremely exciting race.

#1 Secret Circle (M. Garcia / Baffert) should be able to stay close to the pace with the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and three superb peaking workouts.  This lad loves the Oaklawn oval and should be able to pull off the victory.

#2 Ms Anna Destiny (Castanon / Cox) should challenge sitting a bit off the pace with a couple of good last out speed numbers and two athletic workouts.  She holds the second highest (tie) speed number at the distance.  This gal is our Bronze Horseshoe runner for this Sunday.

#6 Aireofdistinction (Santana / Asmussen) could be one of the pacesetters as she tries for her fifth win in a row.  This girl holds the highest last out speed number, a five race progression, and four superb peaking workouts.  If she can control the speed, she will win.

#7 Itsallinthefamily (Tohill / Hartman) will embark on her third win in a row.  She is 100% in the money at this distance and at Oaklawn.  She could surprise.

#4 Livi Makenzie (Mello / Moquett) holds the highest speed number at the distance and has put in three hearty peaking workouts.  This gal could be dangerous.

#1 Jury Wise (Canchari / Hellman) might surprise with an all out effort.  She has a versatile running style which will aide her in this battle.  It is worthy of note that the trainer stat of 67% stakes win is remarkable.

#5 Malibu Holiday (Arroyo / Heffner) cannot be counted out with the third highest speed number at the distance and one diligent workout.  If the pace heats up she has the ability to come from off the pace with a enthusiastic charge.

Wonderful Stakes Saturday

It is a handicappers delight as there is a vast number of terrific stakes races around the country.  On this Saturday we look at a great sprint stakes race at the "Big A".

Aqueduct Race 8 {The Bay Shore~G3~7 furlongs~3 year old~Stakes}
A successful group of eight will go to the gate in this seven furlong spectacular.  There is so much speed in this one that a wicked pace could develop.  All but two are Triple Crown nominees.  For many, this race is a wonderful stepping stones to grander graded stakes down the road.  It should be an exciting race.

#3 Financial Mogul (J. Ortiz / Violette) could stand out as one of the tracker closers in the field.  He holds a couple of decent last out speed numbers, a two race progression, and two solid bullet workouts.  This son of Street Boss has already won a race over the Aqueduct track.
$1 WIN  /  $2 PLACE  / $3 SHOW.

#8 Kobes Back (Nakatani / Sadler) could make another comeback with the highest speed number at the distance and three superb workouts.  This son of Flatter is the only other lad that likes to come from off the pace.  Should a furious pace develop, he should take full advantage of it.

#7 The Admiral (M. Garcia / Baffert) could be the speedy type that outlasts the battle.  he holds the third highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and three decisive workouts.  This son of Giant's Causeway has the pedigree to go on to greater races after he completes this challenge.

#4 Coup de Grace (Castellano / C. Brown) has the ability to bounce back after a disappointing last out grade two race.  He has already notched two victories from three career starts.  This son of Tapit looks to fire fresh after putting in five hearty workouts.

Keeneland R9.  Transylvannia--G3.  This race was moved off the TURF.  Our first pick, Global View, finished 7th.  Our second pick, Pleuven [FR],  was scratched.  Our third pick, Can'thelpbelieving, was also scratched.
We abandoned our 10 CENT Superfecta due to the scratches.  Superfecta went 1-11-3-10.

Spring is in the Air as Keeneland Opens

Springtime blossoms into the opening of the Keeneland meet.  On this Friday we take a peek at a graded Turf stakes race.

Keeneland Race 9 {Transylvania~G3~1 1/16 mile~TURF~3 year old}
A tremendous field of twelve will make the start in this annual graded stakes race.  April rain may bring this one off the Turf.  We shall see. The field includes six Triple Crown nominees.  Only four will be stretching out to this distance.  There is enough speed to keep the pace honest.  This will be a highly competitive race.

#9 Global View (Lezcano / Proctor) may have a slight edge with a couple of very good last out speed numbers, a four race progression, and four stellar, peaking workouts.  He will be stretching out for more improvement taking up a close tracking position.
$1 WIN / $1 SHOW.

#8 Pleuven [FR] (A. Garcia / C. Brown) should challenge with the second highest last out speed number at a longer route, a two race progression, and three hearty workouts.  This lad will be closing swiftly into a heated pace.

#12 Can'thelpbelieving [IRE] (Rosario / Motion) should contend with the fourth highest (tie) last out speed number at a longer route, a four race progression, and two robust workouts.  This guy will be closing swiftly into the stretch.

Starting Off at the "Big A"

On this Thursday we begin our horse racing weekend with a nice mile race at the "Big A".

Aqueduct Race 6 {1 mile~3 year old~Optional Claiming}
An up and coming group of eight three year-olds will hit the dirt in this feature race.  There is adequate speed and forwardly placed types to keep the pace quick.  Most in this one have equally comparable speed figures which should insure that we have a hearty competition.

#6 Oltre' Oro (J. Ortiz / L. Rice) is the only Triple Crown nominee among the bunch.  He holds the highest last out speed number at a longer route and two strong workouts.  This lad should be forwardly placed ready to strike in the stretch.
$1 SHOW.

#3 Pass the Coffee (Arroyo / Zito) should challenge with the second highest (tie) last out speed number, a three race progression, and two stout workouts.  He should track the pace ready to jump into the fray going into the stretch.

#2 Kodiak Kody (W. Garcia / Ubillo) is coming out of a stakes race where he just missed the board.  He holds the fourth highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and one peaking workout.  This lad has a versatile running style where he should feel out the pace.

#7 Life in Shambles (Lezcano / Clement) should contend with the third highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and three quality workouts.  He should find himself reasonably close to the pace seeking a sound position to quicken with.
