Onto the TURF in New York

 Congratulations to the connections of Golden Tempo for winning the 152nd Kentucky Derby. A historic and exciting race.

Today we look in on a good Stakes race on the Turf in New York.

Baqueduct {License Fee Stakes~6 Furlongs~TURF~4 year-old Up~Fillies/Mares~Stakes}

A good group of eight ladies will go to the green in this featured Stakes race on the card.

Past performances used:  Equibase.

There is plenty of speed in this race to produce a scintillating pace. Speed figs are fairly close with half the field scoring at least one triple-digit speed number in their last three. One millionaire joins the field. Three will try the Aqueduct Turf for the first time. One will make a surface switch from synthetic to Turf. It should be an excellent race.

#7 Cynane (Prat / B. Cox) has the tactical speed to adapt to the pace and get a great position into the stretch. She holds a decent last out speed number and four superb workouts. She loves the Aqueduct Turf. A daughter of Omaha Beach, she is 50% in the money from eighteen starts.

$2 WIN  /  $3 PLACE  /  $5 SHOW.

#6 Love Cervere (M. Franco / M. Clement) comes in with the second highest last out speed number and two sound workouts. She is undefeated over the Aqueduct Turf. Look for her to track and close into a furious pace. A daughter of Into Mischief, she is 80% in the money from ten starts.

#3 Jody's Pride (I. Ortiz / Abreu) hit the board in her last with a decent last out speed number and two superb peaking workouts. It will be her first effort over the Aqueduct Turf. Look for her to track the pace closely and spring into the stretch. A millionaire daughter of American Pharoah, she is 60% in the money from fifteen starts.

#1 Civetta (Gaffalione / B. Walsh) comes out of a Turfway race with an average performance. She excels on the Turf. Four stellar workouts add to her cause. She should be among the limited tracker pack. Another daughter of Into Mischief, she is 61% in the money from thirteen starts.

Other Wagering Interests

#9 Mega Mil (Carmouche / J. Servis) comes up from Turfway with the highest last out speed number and three hearty workouts. She should be part of the speed contingent on the front-end. It will be her first Turf effort and first over the Aqueduct course. A daughter of Honor A.P., she is 66% in the money from nine starts.

#8 Do Gooder (Santana / Antonucci) comes to the race with a decent last out speed number at a route. She is another that should be part of the speed scenario. Two robust workouts add to her cache. A daughter of Good Samaritan, she is 41% in the money from seventeen starts.

#5 Buttercream Babe (J. Velazquez / Arnold) holds the third highest last out speed number and two efficient workouts. She should be a part of the tracker pack. This gal loves the Turf, but it will be her first race over the Aqueduct Turf. A daughter of Twirling Candy, she is 56% in the money from sixteen.

KENTUCKY DERBY 2018

This year's edition of the greatest two minutes in sports, Kentucky Derby 144, contains a deeply stacked field. This talented field will be heard about in the years ahead right into the breeding shed. A top flight group of twenty will enter the gate late this afternoon to the cheers of a capacity crowd.

Churchill Downs Race 12 {KENTUCKY DERBY~G1~1 1/4 mile~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

What a supreme field for this years run for the roses. Four millionaires are represented. There is plentiful speed to maintain a very fast pace which could aid those coming off the pace is evident. More likely those that keep close to the pace without doing them in will be aided. Speed numbers are fairly close with the exception of Morning Line favorite, #7 Justify.  As of this writing, he is the second favorite in the wagering across the pond at 9-2. The favorite there is of course, the boys from Ballydoyle entrant #14 Mendelssohn at 4-1. Both very fair and playable odds. We believe that the race will be between the two champs #6 Good Magic and the aforementioned Mendelssohn. Here are our picks for KD144.

#6 Good Magic (J. Ortiz / C. Brown) is ready to run the race of his career. The champ (BC-juvenile) will find himself tracking the pace, build-up on the backstretch, and hit the stretch running his heart out. Trainer, Chad Brown, has worked this guy to build stamina and endurance for his two starts this year. He usually puts his charges through solid customary half mile works. A son of Curlin, he is 100% in the money from his six career starts. He holds the fourth highest overall speed number.
$2 WIN  /  $3 PLACE  /  $5 SHOW.

#14 Mendelssohn (Moore / A. O'Brien) will challenge from a closer to the pace position. His impressive win in the UAE Derby, winning by 18 lengths, shows that distance will not be a problem for him. That race earned him the second highest speed number among this field. A son of Scat Daddy he will be seeking his fourth win in a row. Another champion, winner of the BC juvenile Turf, he travels well and should be primed an ready for his Derby run.
$2 PLACE  /  $3 SHOW.

#5 Audible (Castellano / Pletcher) should contend as the Florida Derby winner. He holds the fifth highest over all speed number and has put in three strong peaking workouts. This lad will be pursuing his fifth win in a row and holds a 100% in the money record from five career starts. A son of Into Mischief, he is projected to take up a close tracking position and spring into the stretch.
$2 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests
While we feel #7 Justify is a fearsome colt with the highest speed figs of any in this field, we feel the pace flow may be too much for this lightly raced lad. We will use him on top in a saver exacta along with our top choices. We are looking to beef up the exotics with a few long shots.

#11 Bolt d'Oro (Espinoza / Ruis) should be in the mix with the third highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and two superb workouts. This lad can be expected to take another step forward in the third race of his form cycle. A son of Medaglia d'Oro, he is another that is 100% in the money from six career starts. He has a chance to win.

#18 Vino Rosso (J. Velazquez / Pletcher) will shoot out of the auxiliary gate taking up a tracking position close to the first tier of runners. He is the last out winner of the Wood Memorial up at Aqueduct. This son of Curlin should handle the distance and show improvement once again.

#8 Lone Sailor (Graham / Amoss) is in tip-top shape for his Derby run. He ran a game second in the Louisiana Derby last out where the racing light bulb clicked on. This lad has a last out speed figure that competes with this elite group of 3 year-olds and has put in three powerful peaking workouts. A son of Majestic Warrior, he has a closing kick that will match any of these fellas.

#20 Combatant (Santana / Asmussen) just made it into the field after a few defections of horses with more points. His post positon doesn't appear to be problematic as he enjoys coming from off the pace. Trainer, Asmussen works his horses patiently and builds them into fine racing animals. This guy is no exception. One of four sons of the late Scat Daddy, he is one of few with a victory over the Churchill dirt.

To the Turf for Superfecta Sunday

On this Superfecta Sunday we take in a very nice Turf stakes race in New York.

Belmont Park Race 8 {License Fee~6 Furlongs~inner TURF~4 year-old Up~Fillies/Mares~Stakes}

A reduced field of seven will hit the grass in this annual affair. There is enough speed to insure a solid pace. Speed numbers are fairly close making this a competitive event. Most in this one are experienced sprinters. Our task is to sew together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket.

#1 Stormy Victoria [FR] (Rosario / Clement) should be well positioned to chase down the leaders for a victory. She holds the third highest last out speed number at a mile route and one hearty workout. This gal is 100% in the money over the Belmont Turf. A daughter of Stormy River [FR], she comes up from Gulf Stream Park where she ran 5th in a grade 3 event. She is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.
$1 SHOW.

#2 Jennifer Lynette (Castellano / Casse) should challenge with the fourth highest (tie) last out speed number and two sizzling bullet workouts. This will be her first try over the Belmont Turf. A daughter of Elusive Quality, she holds the second highest speed number at the distance. With her tactical speed she could be forwardly placed ready to strike.

#6 Nisha (Bravo / J. Englehart) should contend sharing the fourth highest last out speed number, working a two race progression, and putting in two sound peaking workouts. She has recorded a win over the Belmont Turf in her only attempt so far. A daughter of First Samurai, she could wire the field seeking fourth win in a row.

#7 Lady Alexander (J. Ortiz / Motion) is coming off an extended layoff with three robust workouts. She last raced at Saratoga. This gal has recorded two wins over the Belmont Turf from three tries. A daughter of More Than Ready, she should take up a nice tracking positon and move gracefully into the stretch.

10 CENT Superfecta Box ($2.40)

#1 Stormy Victoria [FR]  +  #2 Jennifer Lynette  +  #6 Nisha  +  #7 Lady Alexandra.
