Superfecta Sunday in Sweet Home Chicago

 On this Superfecta Sunday we look in on a fine Turf stakes in Chicagoland.

Hawthorne Race Course Race 7 {Hawthorne Derby~1 1/8 mile~TURF~3 year-old~Stakes}

A great group of twelve will hit the grass in this annual contest.

Past Performances used:  Equibase.

There is enough speed in this Derby to produce an efficient pace. Speed figs are very close. Only one entrant has raced over the Hawthorne course. Additionally, only four have gone this distance. Two will be racing over the Turf for the first time. It should be a fantastic race on a great day of racing across the country.

#7 Tough Little Nut (O. Mojica / C. Block) has hit the same speed fig in his last three races and has put in two power workouts. He has hit the board in all three of races over the Hawthorne Turf. This guy will stretch out to the distance. Look for him to track the pace and strike in the stretch. A son of Palace Malice, he is 57% in the money from seven starts.

#11 Crystal Quest (P. Morales / Trombetta) will also stretch out with the fourth highest last out speed number and two robust workouts. He comes in from Saratoga. This guy should track and close into the pace. A son of Uncle Mo, he is 55% in the money from nine starts.

#6 T'Challa [GB] (M. Garcia / Drysdale) comes in from Great Britain having hit the board in his last two races. His last race was at a longer TURF route. He should track the pace closely and spring into the stretch. A son of Kingman [GB], he is 66% in the money from six starts.

#12 Baxley (Cohen / Rivelli) will switch surfaces coming in with the third highest last out speed number and one sound workout. He should be part of the speed scenario. This gelding comes in from Prairie Meadows seeking his fourth win in a row. A son of Klimt, he is 83% in the money from six starts.

Holiday Racing Monday up in Canada

 Happy Labor Day or do you say Labour Day as in Canada. On this Holiday Monday we take in an exciting Turf stakes up in Ontario.

Fort Erie {Puss N Boots Cup Stakes~1 1/16 mile~TURF~3 year-old Up~Stakes}

A modest field of nine will hit the green in this annual contest.

Past Performances used:  Equibase.

There is plenty of speed on the inside to keep this group rolling. Speed numbers are fairly close making it a competitive race. All but one have raced over the Fort Erie Turf. Most have acquitted themselves well over the Fort Erie course. It should be a fine course on a day with a good deal of action across the North American continent.

#9 Four Aces High (Pinto / Simms) is the deserved favorite with the second highest (tie) last out speed number at this very distance. He should track the pace closely. Winning at this distance last time out should enable him to improve on that effort. A son of Old Forester, he is 45% in the money from forty-two starts.

#4 Wilberforce (Moreno / Ceccato) will challenge with the highest last out speed number and one stout workout. He loves the Turf, distance, and course. A Superfecta Sunday Sprint

 Congratulations to the Connections of Mage, on winning the 149th Kentucky Derby. It was gratifying to see Javier Castellano win his first Kentucky Derby.

On this Superfecta Sunday we take in a great dirt sprint near the Windy City.

Hawthorne Racecourse Race 8 {6 Furlongs~3 year-old Up~Fillies/Mares~Allowance}

A nice field of eight will go to the gate.

There is plenty of speed to keep the pace hot. All but one have sprinted over the Hawthorne track. Speed numbers are very close making it quite competitive event.  It should be a good race to wager and watch.

#6 Rainy Mountain (Santiago / Kirby) should benefit from a hot pace with the third highest last out speed number and one solid workout. This gal loves the surface, distance, and course. A daughter of a King's Empire, is 83% in the money from six career starts.

Turf Action Up North

 We look up North for a little Turf action on this Stakes Saturday.

Woodbine Race 8 {Connaught Cup~G2~7 furlongs~TURF~3 year-old Up~Graded Stakes}

A reduced field of ten will hit the grass in this annual event. 

Past Performances used:  Equibase.

There is enough speed in this one to make it a fast one. Speed numbers are very close making it exceptionally competitive. All but two have covered the Woodbine course. Every last one of these are well prepped for the race. It should be one of the better Turf contests on this Stakes Saturday.

#14 Shirl's Speight (Wilson / Attfield) is the deserved favorite with the second highest last out speed number and two solid workouts. Expect him to track the pace very closely getting first jump on the leaders. He has a win at this distance in one effort. A son of Speightstown, he is 63% in the money from eleven career starts.

A Meat and Potatoes Superfecta Sunday

 We look in on a route race in a meat and potato town for our Superfecta Sunday.

Hawthorne Race Course {1 1/16 mile~3 year-old Up~Claiming}

A field of eight will go to the gate in this low level claiming race in the Chicagoland area.

Past Performances used:  Equibase.

There is sufficient speed to produce a swift pace. Speed numbers for most are very close making it competitive. It is the last on the card which usually produces interesting results. All but one have competed at this route distance. It should be a good race.

#4 Super Silver (Santiago / Becker) is the one to beat with the second highest last out speed number. He loves the Hawthorne track and should be part of the pace scenario. A son of Super Saver, he is 66% in the money from twenty-one career starts.

A reduced field of seven will go to the gate in this Stakes sprint for the youngsters. There is speed o' plenty with this group. Speed figs are fairly close making this one competitive as these lads continue to show improvement in their racing careers. It should be a fine race.

#8 Fast Jack (Santiago / Becker) will making his second career start after winning at first asking. He holds the highest last out speed number among this crew. Add to that a modest layoff with three superb workouts, and there is a recipe for success. He should be part of the speed herd as they depart the gate. A son of Ghaaleb, he will be stretching out for this race.

A "Big A" Superfecta Sunday

 As we move through November it seems the fields tend to thin out a bit. On this Superfecta Sunday we take in a Grade three event for the youngsters.

Aqueduct Race 9 {Nashua Stakes~G3~1 mile~2 year-old~Graded Stakes}

A good field of seven hearty youngsters will battle in this mile race.

Past Performances used:  DRF Formulator.

The field is evenly divided among the forwardly placed types and those that are beginning to a develop an off the pace style of running. Given that, it should be an honest pace. Speed numbers are fairly close for a bunch with few races to their credit. All will look to improve. None have raced at Aqueduct yet. Our task is to string together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta Box ticket. It should be a fine race.

#4 Pickin' Time (McCarthy / Breen) could have the benefit of more experience having completed four races already. He shows the third highest last out speed number and one solid workout heading into the race. Look for him to track close to the pace ready to strike. This guy is one of three who have already gone this distance. A son of Stay Thirsty, he is 75% in the money from four career starts. This colt is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

$1 SHOW.

#1 Ten for Ten (Cancel / McGaughey) should go off as the favorite having hit the board in both of his starts. He holds the second highest (tie) last out speed number at a longer route and three hearty workouts. He could show early speed in this race. A son of Frosted, he is 100% in the money from two career starts.

#6 Civil War (Juarez / Albertrani) is coming out of a grade one race at Belmont Park. His speed numbers are improving and he has put in two robust workouts. Look for him to close swiftly coming around the turn. A son of Bodemeister, he is 50% in the money from two career starts.

#5 Isolate (Torres / Ritvo) should challenge with the highest last out speed number and three dynamite, peaking workouts. This guy is another that could should speed from the gate. He comes into this race having won both of his starts. A son of Mark Valeski, he will be stretching out to this distance.

Superfecta Sunday Up in Canada

 We go up North (virtually) for our Superfecta Sunday for a stakes race for the youngsters.

Woodbine Race 8 {Coronation Futurity Stakes~1 1/8 mile~2 year-old~CAN~Stakes}

Eight youngsters go to the gate in this featured stakes race. 

Past Performances Used:  DRF Formulator.

A talented field will all stretch out to this distance battling for the purse money. There is speed to keep an honest pace. Speed numbers are very close for these young lads. There is good pedigrees represented in all of these Canadian bred horses. Our task is to harness a winning 20 CENT Superfecta Box. It should be a super fine race.

#5 British Royalty (Lermyte / Minshall) could make a leap forward from his maiden win with the fourth highest last out speed number and two ultra-sharp workouts. This gelding will be looking for some pace to close into. A son of English Channel, this guy will be seeking his second win in a row. He is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

#1 Master Spy (P. Husbands / M. Casse) should go off as the favorite with the second highest (tie) last out speed number and one solid workout. This colt has solid connections and is primed for the race. A son of Silent Name [JPN], he is 100% in the money from four career starts.

Woodbine R8.  Overskate Stakes.  Our first pick, Not So Quiet, won (1st) for win money of $4.20, place money of $4.50, and show money of $5.10.  Our second pick, Royal Laser, finished 2nd for place money of $1.75 and show money of $2.90.  Our third pick, Eskiminzin, finished 8th.

We were successful in our Saturday Exacta Wheel for a payout of $15.55.

Superfecta went 7-1-6-3.

Bankroll gets off the schnide and settles at $34.42.

A Canadian Stakes Saturday

 We venture, virtually, up to beautiful Canada to view the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.

Woodbine Race 10 {Breeder's Stakes~1 1/2 mile~TURF~3 year-old~Canadian Bred~Stakes}

A great field of twelve will journey on the grass in this annual contest. 

Past Performances used:  DRF  Formulator.

There is some speed to maintain an honest pace in this marathon Turf run. Speed numbers are fairly close as many in this race still continue to improve. A couple of maidens make an appearance in the race. All have yet to travel this classic distance. This race is the "lucky last" on the card and should be one of the most exciting races of the day.

#11 Told It All (Kimura / McKnight) continues to show improvement in each of his last three races. He holds the fourth highest last out speed number and two speedy workouts. This guy loves the surface and the Woodbine course. He has the tactical speed to adjust as the pace moves along. A son of Big Scream, this gelding is 57% in the money from seven career starts.

#8 Mighty Heart (Fukimoto / J. Carroll) looks to wrap up the third leg of the Canadian triple-crown seeking the win. This colt holds the highest last out speed number and three mighty workouts. It is possible for this talented lad to come away with a victory on the third surface of the Canadian Triple Crown.

 Keeneland in the Fall is one of the most beautiful places on earth. On this Stakes Saturday we take in a very nice graded stakes sprint for the ladies on the dirt.

Hawthorne Race Course R4.  Maiden Special Weight. We just missed on our 20 CENT Superfecta box effort hooking three of the four wagering interests needed to cash. Superfecta went 4-7-6-11.

A Hawthorney Superfecta Sunday

 A mild and partly cloudy day will usher in some good horse racing at that venerable track Southwest of Chicago's Loop.

Hawthorne Race Course Race 4 {1 mile~TURF~2 year-old~Fillies~Maiden Special Weight}

A good crop of eleven young fillies will enter the gate in this early on the card affair.

The field is lacking in speed as only two forwardly placed types will step forward and may battle for the wire. Most have only raced a couple times indicating that all will show some improvement. Speed numbers are fairly close which makes this race highly competitive. Our task is to weave together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta Box ticket. It should be a fantastic race.

#6 Scent of Success (Arrieta / Robertson) might do well in among this group. She holds the third highest last out speed number and two hearty workouts. Venture North for Graded Stakes

On this Superfecta Sunday we venture North for a fine graded stakes race at a new track in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Perhaps a change in venue will do us some good.

Century Mile Race 10 {Canadian Derby~G3~1 1/4 mile~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

A great field of twelve will enter into the gate in this 90th running of the derby. There is some speed to keep an honest pace. Speed figs align nicely giving any of these improving lads a chance to move over to the winners circle. All of these guys will be stretching out to the mile and a quarter distance. Our task is to hatch a winning 20 CENT Superfecta box ticket. It should be a fantastic race to wager and watch.

#8 Final Jeopardy (Sarmiento / Hall)  will be the favorite coming in from New York. He holds the highest last out speed fig and one sound workout. This colt has faced tougher in his young career. A son of Kentucky Derby winner, Street Sense, he should be tracking the pace-setters and close them all down.

#7 Journeyman (D. Nelson / Harty) should present a strong challenge with the fourth highest last out speed fig and three superb workouts. This gelding comes in from Chicago and holds a 100% in the money record from six career starts. Another son of a Kentucky Derby winner, Animal Kingdom, he should be tracking closely and strike in the stretch. He is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

#10 Senor Friday (O. Mojica / Diodoro) appears to be sitting on a significant effort having traveled well in the North lands. #3 Kaziranga (M. Pedroza / M. Simms) is another of the more experienced runners with some very good last out speed figs and one sharp workout. This colt should relish the distance as he comes in from the Kentucky racing circuit. A son of Candy Ride [ARG], he is another that will be part of the tracking crew looking for an opening as the quickening begins.

We gaze up North for an excellent stakes race over synthetic for our Superfecta Sunday.

Furlong Friday for Opening Day at Belmont

You know we are heading into a serious horse racing season when Belmont opens, Churchill Downs follows, and then Arlington International opens next week.

Today, we try to get back into Furlong Friday action by taking a look at a sweet New York bred Stakes race.

Belmont Park Race 8 {Affirmed Success Stakes~6 Furlongs~4 year-old Up~NY~Stakes}

A slightly reduced field of six will hustle into the gate for this sprint feature. There is enough forwardly placed types to guarantee an honest pace. Speed numbers are fairly close. All of these lads could be considered specialists at the distance. It should be a terrific race.

#4 Pat on the Back (D. Davis / J. Englehart) is coming off a layoff and out of a grade one race. This guy could have the edge racing fresh. He holds the third highest last out speed number at a route and three superb workouts. This guy is 75% in the money at this distance. Look for him to be close to the pace.

#2 Celtic Chaos (Cancel / B. Cox) is coming off a modest layoff where is scored the highest last out speed number and has put in three solid workouts. This lad shares the highest speed number at the distance as well as an 66% in the money record at same. A speedy pace will benefit him greatly.

#1 Bavaro (Maragh / L. Rice) should show speed sharing the highest speed number at the distance and putting in one quality workout. He exits a bit longer sprint and gets back to a beneficial distance. Another one with an exceptional in the money record at the distance (70% from seventeen starts). He could wire the field.

#8 Snydergaard (Alvarado / Terranova) exits a grade three were he posted the fourth highest speed number of this group. He has fired three bullets in preparation for this race. This guy should track the pace and strike in the stretch.

On this Superfecta Easter Sunday we take a look at an outstanding Stakes sprint North of the border.

Woodbine Race 6 {Star Shoot Stakes~6 Furlongs~3 year-old~Fillies~Stakes}

A glorious field of ten will enter the gate in this stakes sprint. There is enough speed to guarantee a demanding pace. Speed figures for these young ladies are very close. Stakes Saturday on the Florida Dirt

On this Stakes Saturday we take a look at the feature graded stakes race on the dirt in South Florida.

Gulfstream Park Race 5 {Harlan's Holiday~G3~1 1/16 mile~3 year-old Up}

We have a short field of six in this one. Such as it is during the winter meets. There is truly one standout in the race, Audible, and relative parity among the rest as they battle for the remaining purse pie. Among the battlers, the speed figs are fairly close giving it a really competitive feel for these lads to hit the board. In a change to our favored exotic wager we will make an effort with the Trifecta.

#1 Audible (Castellano / Pletcher) is the one to beat. This year's Florida Derby winner (3rd in the Kentucky Derby), appears to be in fine form. He won last out earning the highest speed fig among this group and has put in three superb peaking workouts. This millionaire son of Into Mischief is undefeated at the distance and over the Gulfstream Park track. We will make a token win bet on this champion.

#4 Village King [ARG] (J. Velazquez / Pletcher) is in great form and should be part of the pace scenario. This guy holds the second highest last out speed number at a longer route and one stout workout. A son of Campanologist, he comes in from the NYRA racing circuit.

#6 Sir Anthony (B. Hernandez / Mitchell) comes in from the Chicago racing circuit with three wins in a row including the Bruce D. on Arlington Million Day. He holds the third highest speed number at the distance and one solid workout. This son of Mineshaft should be closing swiftly with the right pace in front of him.

#3 Sightforsoreeyes (Jimenez / Quartarolo) comes in from the Kentucky racing circuit with the second highest speed number at the distance and two tough workouts. A son of Sightseeing, he should also be part of the pace scenario. Look for him to put his tactical speed to good use.

Up North for Superfecta Sunday

We hit the synth up North in frosty Canada for our Superfecta Sunday.

Woodbine Race 8 {Valedictory~G3~1 3/4 mile~3 year-old Up~Graded Stakes}

A fine field of nine will hit the Tapeta in this annual contest. Lacking in any dominating speed, the race could come down to positioning as the quickening begins. Speed figs are fairly close although four have yet to run this longer distance. Our task is to select the right mix to conquer the 20 CENT Superfecta. It could be the best race of the day.

#7 Melmich (Contreras / K. Attard) looks to be the winner in this one sporting the highest speed number at this distance. He holds the second highest (4-way tie) last out speed number and two sound workouts. Proven at the distance, this millionaire son of Wilko should be tracking ready for the race to the wire.

#5 A A Azula's Arch (Moreno / K. Attard) is the lone filly in the race. She shares the second highest last out speed number and has put in two stout workouts. A daughter of Arch, distance should not be a problem. This gal loves the surface and the Woodbine track. She is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

He appears to be in the best form of the bunch. A son of English Channel he is another that will track whatever pace develops and battle in the stretch.

An Emerald Superfecta Sunday

We look in on closing day at Emerald Downs up in Auburn, Washington for our Superfecta Sunday.

A nice field of eight will go to the gate in this annual contest. There is enough speed to keep the pace rolling quickly. Speed numbers are fairly close for these competitors. All have solid in the money records making it a challenge to fasten together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket. But try we must in what should be a very good race.

#8 Weekend Wizard (Walcott / MacPherson) should go off as the favorite with the highest last out speed numbers at a longer route and one fine workout. He should be the pace-setter and could wire the field. A son of Rosburg, he is 72% in the money form eleven career starts.

#6 Canadian Game (Gutierrez / Gann) will challenge with the second highest (tie) last out speed number, again at a longer route and one superb workout. He should be running close to the pace seeking to get first jump on the field. A son of Curlin, is also 72% in the money from eleven starts.

Superfecta Summer Sunday

On this Superfecta Sunday we turn our attention to a great Turf stakes battle for the youngsters up in O Canada.

Only one defection makes this a beautifully bred group of twelve which will hit the grass. Most in here have only raced once so there is room for improvement at anytime. Despite their youth, the speed figs are fairly close. There is enough speed to keep the pace vigorous. Our task is to blend together a winning 20 CENT Superfecta box ticket. It should be a terrific Turf race.

#11 Tricky Magician (J. Velazquez / Casse) might have the advantage through racing experience alone. He shows the third highest last out speed number and one stout workout. This lad has hit the board in all three of his career starts. A son of Magician [IRE], he should be forwardly placed ready to strike. He is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

#2 Avie's Flatter (Da Silva / J. Carroll) will contend as he makes the surface switch from Tapeta to Turf.  Winning at first asking and producing three solid peaking workouts, this lad is primed for another good race. A son of Flatter, he should be racing close to the pace.

#13 Federal Law (O. Murphy / Watson) comes from across the pond with good experience racing in Great Britain. He placed second in an allowance contest a little more than two weeks ago. Expect this son of Scat Daddy to track the pace and launch bravely into the stretch.
