Superfecta Sunday under the New Mexico Sun

On this Superfecta Sunday we take in a very fine Stakes race down in New Mexico.

Sunland Park Race 9 {Mine That Bird Derby~1 1/16 mile~3 year-old~Stakes}

A solid field of nine will go to the gate in this stakes race named after Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird.  There is enough speed to insure a swift pace. Speed numbers are fairly close for these continuously improving young horses. Our task is to string together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket.

#1 Reride (A. Juarez / Asmussen) might have the edge with the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and four strong peaking workouts. He could be forwardly placed for a maximum effort. A son of Candy Ride [ARG], he is a Triple Crown nominee. He is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.
$2 SHOW.

#4 Runaway Ghost (Hebert / Fincher) could go off as the favorite with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two hearty workouts. He is the only other runner that has already competed at this distance. A son of Ghostzapper, he could wire this field.

#2 Beautiful Game (E. Gomez / Asmussen) should contend with the fourth highest last out speed number and a six race progression. This guy will be stretching out to this distance after running a mile over the Sunland Park track. A son of Even the Score, he should be tracking the pace closely.

#3 Sphene (Chirinos / M. Hernandez) should make a further improvement after winning at first asking in his only career start. With an expected hot pace, he should use his tracking capability to great advantage. A son of Bodemeister, he is also Triple Crown nominated.

Stakes Saturday Evening in Houston

We take in a robust Turf race in Houston for our Stakes Saturday.

Sam Houston Race Park Race 9 {Houston Turf Stakes~1 1/16 mile~TURF~4 year-old Up~TX~Stakes}

A smashing field of nine Texas breds will hit the green in this last on the card Stakes race. Hopefully the rain holds off and it goes well on the Turf. There is some speed to maintain an honest pace. Speed numbers are very close making it any horse's race. It should be a fine race for the night cap.

#2 Mav Master (Wade / Craddock) might have the edge as he goes for his second win in a row. He holds the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two vigorous, peaking workouts. A son of Mizzen Mast, he should track the pace closely sprouting in the stretch.

#7 Don't Blame Dexter (I. Diego  / Broberg) will challenge as he makes a surface switch from dirt to Turf. He shows a couple of good last out speed numbers as he secured victories in both over dirt. This guy can be expected to be forwardly placed. A son of McGolden Song, he is 72% in the money from seven career starts.

#10 Can't Be Wrong (Gondron / Pish) should contend with the highest speed number at this distance, a two race progression, and two stamina producing workouts. This son of Broken Vow should be tracking and closing gallantly.

#9 Moojab Jr (Guerra / Torrez) looks ready to compete with a couple of good last out speed numbers, a two race progression, and two super endurance work efforts. He should be closing well given an ample pace. A son of Moojab, he is 72% in the money from eleven career starts.

Holiday Monday Racing in Arkansas

Happy Presidents' Day.

We take a look at another Derby prep down in Arkansas.

Oaklawn Park Race 9 {The Southwest~G3~1 1/16 mile~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

A field of ten is expected to leave the gate in this KD 144 prep race. Derby points are at stake here as the connections look toward that first Saturday in May.  There is plentiful speed in this one which could produce a speed-fest, especially the way the Arkansas track has been playing. Speed numbers are very close as each entrant continues to improve along the Derby trail. Avery exciting race will unfold on this Presidents' Day.

#10 Combatant (Santana / Asmussen) might have the edge with his tracking capability as the leaders burn through the early fractions. He holds the second highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and three hearty peaking workouts. A son of Scat Daddy, he is 75% in the money from four career starts.

#4 Mourinho (Van Dyke / Baffert) should be forwardly placed just off the pace setters. He holds the highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and four high powered, peaking workouts. This son of Kentucky Derby winner, Super Saver, is 100% in the money from four career starts.

#8 Zing Zang (Lanerie / Asmussen) should be a big beneficiary of a hotly contested pace. He has a couple of very good last out speed numbers, a three race progression, and three solid peaking workouts. A son of Tapit, he is now just showing great progress in the racing game.

Superfecta Sunday on the Turf

As the sun shines down on the South Florida Turf, we peer into a Stakes caliber Turf contest on this Superfecta Sunday.

Gulfstream Park Race 11 {1 mile~TURF~4 year-old Up~Allowance Optional Claiming}

A field of eight with top Turf pedigrees will hit the green in this second to last race on the card. It has the feel of a Stakes caliber race evidencing the high quality Turf pedigrees represented. There are a few in here that should be forwardly placed which should produce a smooth pace. Speed numbers are fairly close. It should be a dandy of a Turf mile. Our task is to blend together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta ticket.

#4 Secretary At War (I. Ortiz / Jerkens) should have the edge with the fourth highest last out speed number and a superb workout tab. He loves the grass and the distance. This son of War Front is 54% in the money from eleven career starts. He is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

#3 Deeply Undervalued (Castellano / C. Brown) is coming off an extra extended layoff, but appears ready to roll. Stakes Saturday down in NOLA

Another Kentucky Derby prep race rolls up today on this Stakes Saturday. We take a look at a very competitive race down in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Fair Grounds Race 9 {Risen Star~G2~1 1/16 mile~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

A talented and well bred group of nine will head toward the gate seeking KD 144 points in this annual Graded Stakes race. There are a number in here that could be forwardly placed asserting some speed to keep an honest pace. Speed numbers are extremely close making any horse's race. It should be one of the most exciting races in North America on this Stakes Saturday.

#9 Principe Guilherme (Geroux / Asmussen) might have a slight edge as he has tripled up on the same speed fig in all three of his career starts. Could be an indicator that he is ready to explode on the KD 144 trail. He holds the third highest (tie) last out speed number, a two race progression, and two superb workouts. This son of Tapit, should make a tactical trip over the Fair Grounds track.

We look in on a Stakes caliber Turf battle in South Florida for this weeks Superfecta Sunday.

Gulfstream Park Race 10 {1 1/8 mile~TURF~4 year-old Up~Optional Claiming}

A great field of eight will go to the gate in this stakes caliber optional claimer. It comes up a bit light on speed, but it appears others could step up to keep the pace rolling. Speed numbers are very close for this group of quality Turfers. Our task is to string together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta Box ticket.

#2 Black Sea [FR] (Castellano / C. Brown) might be best positioned to take this race. He holds the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two sound workouts. He is 72% in the money from eighteen career starts. He is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

#4 Lucallan (I. Ortiz / McLaughlin) could go off as the deserved favorite with the highest last out speed number, a six race progression, and four strong workouts. This guy loves the Turf and the distance. He is 83% in the money from six starts.

#5 Classic Covey (J. Lezcano / Mott) should take another step forward as he stretches out to this distance. He holds the third highest last out speed number, a five race progression, and two hearty workouts. This lad should be closing swiftly heading into the stretch.

Stakes Saturday Derby Prep in Tampa

More Derby points are on the line on this Stakes Saturday. We take in a great race in Tampa, Florida.

Tampa Bay Downs Race 10 {Sam F. Davis~G3~1 1/16 mile~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

A modest field of seven will go to the gate in this annual Kentucky Derby 144 prep race. There is some speed to keep the pace honest. Speed numbers are fairly close as each of these guys show improvement as they begin their 3 year-old season. It should be a thrilling race.

#3 Vino Russo (J. Velazquez / Pletcher) might pull off the victory as he embarks on his third win in a row. He holds a couple of decent last out speed numbers and four earnest peaking workouts. A son of Curlin, he will be stretching out to this distance after a victory over the Tampa Bay track. Expect him to be forwardly placed.

Superfecta Sunday on Super Bowl Sunday

Today we enjoy the 52nd Super Bowl. Despite the fact that we relish Parx Racing over Suffolk Downs, we do not have a horse in this race.

There is, however, some great horse racing to watch and wager this afternoon across North America before the big event. On this Superfecta Sunday we take in a fine Maiden Claiming race at "The Great Race Place."

Santa Anita Park Race 7 {1 1/16 mile~3 year-old~Fillies~Maiden Claiming}

A good crop of ten will go to the gate in this fine race. There is some speed to keep the pace rolling. The entire field will be stretching out to this distance making it all the more intriguing. Speed numbers are very close as each one of these girls seek to win their first race. It will be a very competitive event. Our task is to cobble together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket.

#4 All Net (T. Baze / Mullins) might have the advantage as she drops in from a more competitive event and makes a surface switch. She holds the third highest last out speed number and has put in four superb peaking workouts in preparation. This gal should track and close gracefully. She is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

#9 Mischievious Lass (Conner / Glatt) could go off as the favorite with the highest (tie) last out speed number, a three race progression, and two stout workouts. She loves the Turf and the Santa Anita course having hit the board in both her efforts. This gal will be closing swiftly.

#6 Taylorealswift (Bejarano / Baltas) should challenge sharing the highest last out speed number, working a two race progression, and putting in two hearty workouts. This gal is another that enjoys the Turf and the Santa Anita course. She should take up a tracking position and sprout in the stretch.

#3 Artistic Ministry (Roman / Miyadi) should contend as she could be close to the lead with a couple of decent last out speed numbers and two solid peaking workouts. She will be making her fourth career start with a 33% in the money record.

Holy Bull, It's Stakes Saturday

Yes. On a Saturday of three Kentucky Derby preps we look in on the biggest one of the day down in beautiful South Florida.

Gulfstream Park Race 12 {Holy Bull~G2~1 1/16 mile~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

A reduced field of nine will enter the gate in this annual Derby prep. There is enough speed to maintain an honest pace. Speed numbers are very close making it super competitive. All but one have been nominated to the Triple Crown. It should be a tremendously exciting race on a Stakes Saturday full of great races.

#4 Audible (Castellano / Pletcher) might have the edge as he stretches out to this distance with the highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and three superb workouts. He will be embarking on his third win in a row. A son of Into Mischief, he should be relatively close to the pace and spring into the stretch.

#1 Enticed (Rosario / McLaughlin) should challenge with the third highest (3-way tie) last out speed number and four hearty peaking workouts. He has already notched a win at this distance as well as hitting the board in all three of his career starts. A son of Medaglia d'Oro, he should show a tracking strategy and strike in the stretch.
