Houston Superfecta Sunday

On this Superfecta Sunday we look in on the ladies in Houston.

A very nice field of eight will go to the gate in this annual affair. There is enough speed to keep the pace honest. Speed numbers are very, very close for all of these ladies. Not a single gal in this field has raced over the Houston track. Our task is to string together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta Box ticket.

#2 Martini Glass (P. Lopez / Nations) might have a slight edge with the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two bullet workouts. She has won three times at this distance in six tries. Count her to track the pace and swoop into the stretch. She is our Bronze Horseshoe slection.

#7 Actress (J. Ortiz / Servis) will contend with the highest last out speed number at a longer route, a three race progression, and three strong workouts. She enjoys the second highest speed number at the distance. This lady should be tracking and closing fiercely.

#4 Valadorma (B. Hernandez / Casse) should be in the hunt with the third highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and two sturdy workouts. She loves this distance, holding a 100% in the money record from seven starts at it. She is another gal that will be tracking the pace.

A Rich Stakes Saturday

Looking forward to the great races at Gulfstream Park on this very rich Stakes Saturday. We examine the big race of the day.

Gulfstream Park Race 12 {Pegasus World Cup Invitational~G1~1 1/8 mile~4 year-old Up~Graded Stakes}

A rich and fabulous field of twelve will line up in the second running of the world's richest horse race. There are eight millionaires in this field making it a star-studded cast. There is speed-o-plenty to get a fierce pace on. Speed numbers are reflective of the quality of the runners. This will be the most anticipated race of the day.

#10 Gun Runner (Geroux / Asmussen) is the horse of the year (2017) and will go off as the deserved favorite. He holds the highest last out speed number, a five race progression, and four super strong peaking workouts. He will be going for his fifth win in a row with the highest speed number at the distance and a 85% in the money record at it. A son of Candy Ride [ARG], he will be forwardly placed ready to strike. A very small win bet is warranted as the odds will be very short.

#11 Seeking the Soul (J. Velazquez / D. Stewart) should make another improvement with a couple of excellent last out speed numbers (winning both), a four race progression, and four superb peaking workouts. This guy could be sitting on a big performance, especially if the speed hits the boiling point. A son of Perfect Soul [IRE], he is 100% in the money at this distance from five starts.

#2 West Coast (Castellano / Baffert) should pose a significant challenge with the third highest (tie) last out speed number, a two race progression, and four sensational peaking workouts. He holds the second highest speed number at the distance and has two victories in only two tries. A millionaire son of Flatter, he has the tactical speed to stay the course.

#9 Toast of New York (Detorri / Osborne) comes over from across the pond. His connections would not send him if they didn't feel he was ready, willing and able to compete. He last ran in Great Britain after an extended layoff. This guy will be cutting back in distance from his last and has gotten a peaking workout over the Gulfstream track. A son of Thewayouare, he should be tracking the pace strategically and uncork in the stretch.

A Little Downhill Furlong Friday

Thank goodness it's Furlong Friday. Today we look in on a swell downhill Turf race.

Santa Anita Park Race 7 {6 1/2 Furlongs~Downhill TURF~4 year-old Up~Optional Claiming}

A reduced field of eight will strut up the hill for this Turf race. There is plentiful speed. Speed numbers are fairly close giving the race a competitive feel to it. It should be a very fast race with each of these guys battling in the stretch.

#8 Incensed (Prat / Miller) looks like he might have the edge with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two sturdy workouts. He has the tactical speed to outlast any speed fight on the front end. This guy enjoys the highest speed number of the group over the Turf, at the distance, and over the Santa Anita course.

#6 What'sontheagenda (Periera / O'Neill) will challenge coming off an extended layoff with a couple of decent last out speed numbers, working a three race progression, and putting in three high quality peaking workouts. #9 Mesut (Roman / Gaines) just cleared his maiden hurdle in his third start securing the third highest last out speed number. He has improved in every start and has put in two dynamic workouts. With a sure fire speed battle, he will be closing earnestly.

#1 El Tovar (Bejarano / Baltas) should contend with the second highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and two efficient workouts. This guy has the most experience on the unique downhill course posting the second highest speed number. He should be another that benefits from a speedy race.

Going to the Turf for Superfecta Sunday

We go to the Turf in sunny South Florida for our Superfecta Sunday.

Gulfstream Park Race 10 {1 1/8 mile~TURF~4 year-old Up~Fillies/Mares~Allowance Optional Claiming}

A field of nine ladies will hit the green in this Turf race. It comes up very light on speed. Speed numbers, however; are very close. Most come to this race with a brief freshening. It should be a great wagering race as there is parity among this field. Our task is to strap together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket.

#9 Quant (J. Velazquez / Clement) might have a slight edge with the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and three stamina producing workouts. She also holds the highest speed number at this distance having hit the board twice in three tries at this longer Turf route. Stakes Saturday in Florida

On this Stakes Saturday we look at a terrific sprint in sunny Florida.

Tampa Bay Downs Race 8 {Pasco Stakes~7 Furlongs~3 year-old~Stakes}

A reduced field of eight will go to the gate in this annual sprint contest. There is decent speed to warrant a swift pace. Speed numbers are very close giving it a competitive feel. All will be firing fresh with layoffs of a variety of durations. This is a good field of horses prepping for the bigger Stakes races as the season moves forward.

#8 Awaken (Morales / Hamm) might have a slight edge with a couple of good last out speed numbers, his last out being a route. Couple that first place performance with four excellent workouts and you have a willing an able horse to cart off the victory. A son of Derby winner, Super Saver, he should be forwardly placed where all the action should take place.

#7 World of Trouble (Gallardo / Ja. Servis) will challenge on the front end with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two sharp peaking workouts. A son of Kantharos, he is coming in from Gulfstream Park with a 100% in the money record from two career starts.

Furlong Friday at Aqueduct

A little better weather in New York as we look at a nice Maiden Special Weight sprint for our Furlong Friday.

Aqueduct Race 6 {6 1/2 Furlongs~3 year-old~Fillies~NY~Maiden Special Weight}

A nice field of eight will go to the gate in this Maiden race for New York breds. These young ladies are still learning the sport and a few will be forwardly placed to churn up the pace. There are two First Time Starters which have every chance to win on debut. Others in here have speed numbers that are somewhat close. No matter, these races are always highly competitive.

#8 Queen Apollo (McCarthy / Asmussen) has the edge with the highest last out speed number in her first start and two superb, peaking workouts. She should be forwardly placed and could wire this field. With formidable connections, she looks well primed to break her maiden here.

#6 Scorpion Bowl (Alvarado / L. Rice) will challenge with the fourth highest last out speed number and one solid workout. She also should be battling on the front end seeking position for the run to the wire.

#3 My Lightening Strike (D. Davis / Levine) should show improvement in her third start with a couple of decent last out speed numbers and three sturdy workouts. This gal is a daughter of Mineshaft so look for a hearty performance from her.

We go long on the Turf today at the "Great Race Place" in celebration of our Superfecta Sunday.

Santa Anita Park Race 9 {Astral Stakes~1 1/2 mile~TURF~4 year-old Up~Fillies/Mares~Stakes}

A good field of ten ladies will hit the California grass in this last race on the Sunday card. There is some speed with the "X-factor" being the Irish-bred, #6 Plein Air [IRE] who will be making her first North American start after racing in Italy. Speed numbers are fairly close, though many have yet to go this marathon distance. It should be an incredible race. Our task is to knit together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket. Let's give a whirl.

#10 Estrechada [ARG] (Elliott / Puype) might have the best for this crew with the fourth highest (tie) last out speed number at a longer route and four superb peaking workouts. She loves this distance and the Santa Anita course. This gal should display some forward placement and then lead the charge to the wire. She is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

#5 How Unusual (Nakatani / Pender) should challenge with the highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and two robust workouts. This lady has four wins over the Santa Anita course and should set-up with a tracking position. She will be gunning for her third victory in a row.

Stakes Saturday on the Kentucky Derby Trail

We stay on at the Fair Grounds for another KD 144 prep race for Stakes Saturday action.

Fair Grounds Race 9 {LeComte~G3~1 mile 70 yards~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

An excellent crop of thirteen Derby aspirants will settle in the gate in this annual prep race. There is sufficient speed to carry along a good pace. Speed numbers are fairly close, but these lads are improving as they begin their three year-old season. It should be an excitingly competitive race.

#12 Principe Guilherme (Geroux / Asmussen) could pull of his third career win in a row with the second highest last out speed number and two superb peaking workouts. He has the speed to wire this field having already secured a win at this distance and over the Fair Grounds track. A son of Tapit, he should have a peak performance as he makes his third career start.

Furlong Friday at the Fair Grounds

A chilly Furlong Friday in NOLA as we look in on the last on the card at the Fair Grounds.

A good group of seven will go to the gate in the last race of the New Orleans day. There is a plethora of speed which should produce a sizzling pace. Speed numbers are fairly close for these Louisiana bred gals. It should be an excellent race to cap off a Furlong Friday.

#3 Bull Headed Woman (Mena / Johnston) looks to take another step up with the third highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two stout workouts. She should follow snuggly as the leaders go through the pace calls. With this much speed signed on, she may benefit greatly.

Staying on at Santa Anita for our Superfecta Sunday we take in a Grade 2 Sprint.

A premium field of nine will hit the dirt in this annual event. Plenty of speed to keep the pace rolling. Speed numbers are very, very close which should make it any one of these fillies race. Our task is to string together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta ticket.
A great race should unfold.

#8 Midnight Bisou (Smith / Spawr) might have the edge with the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and five tremendous peaking workouts. Though only a maiden, she has hit the board in both of her races and relishes the distance. A daughter of Midnight Lute, she should track the pace capably.

#7 Win the War (Gaffalione / Casse) comes in from Canada to battle these California girls. She holds the highest overall speed number that recorded a win at this distance, albeit over the Tapeta surface up at Woodbine. She has put in three strong workouts prepping for this race. A daughter of War Front, she should also track the pace carefully.

#9 Just a Smidge (Van Dyke / Baffert) looks ready to take another step forward coming out of a route race. She has put in four stellar, peaking workouts ready to race. This gal show the highest speed number over the dirt surface. A daughter of Into Mischief, she should be closer to the pace and launch into the stretch. She is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.

The KD144 prep season begins in earnest for 2018. We take a peek at a Kentucky Derby prep at the "Great Race Place" on this Stakes Saturday.

Santa Anita Park Race 5 {Sham Stakes~G3~1 mile~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

A reduced field of six will go to the gate in the first KD 144 prep race of 2018. There is some speed so it should be an interesting to see how the pace unfolds. Speed numbers are very close giving the race an competitive feel. With Derby points on the line it should be a fantastic race.

#6 McKinzie (Smith / Baffert) should be the deserved favorite with the highest last out speed number and three stellar peaking workouts. This lad will be coming down in class and distance to face these fellow Derby aspirants. A son of Kentucky Derby champ, Street Sense he should come on strong from a tracking position.

#5 Shivermetimbers (Prat / Hollendorfer) should challenge with the second highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and four robust peaking workouts. A New Year Turf Sprint

A New Year begins as we look at a terrific Turf sprint on a Holiday Monday.

Gulfstream Park Race 9 {Janus Stakes~5 Furlongs~TURF~4 year-old Up~Stakes}

A reduced field of seven will take to the South Florida green in this Stakes sprint. There is plenty of speed to gear up the pace. Speed figs are very close creating a competitive event. It should be a good race to start our horse racing year off.

#5 Hogy (J. Ortiz / Maker) should go off as the favorite as he exits a grade one event in his last. He holds the fourth highest last out speed number and four superb workouts. This guy is an incredible 95% in the money from forty-seven career starts. The only millionaire in the field, he loves the Turf and the distance. Certainly, the one to beat.

#4 Successful Native (Gaffalione / Maragh) could challenge with a couple of good last out speed numbers. This lad shares the highest speed number over the Gulfstream grass as well as holds the second highest speed number at the distance. He has the tactical speed to stay with these sprinters.
