Hooray For Hot Springs

With many of the Kentucky Derby aspirants coming through Oaklawn Park, let's get some handicapping in there before some of the big races begin in the weeks ahead.  Today we will tune up with a nice little sprint allowance race.

Oaklawn Park {6 furlongs~4 year old Up~Allowance}
A good field of ten will make the start of this sprint.  Macjoey (Gryder / Asmussen) appears to have the edge with the highest (tie) speed number at the distance and four sensational, peaking workouts.  Delong Road (Thompson / Lukas) will challenge also holding the highest speed number at the distance, a four race progression, and one good workout.  Seton Hall (Court / W. Fires) will be in the hunt with the fourth highest last out speed number coming off a route, a two race progression, and three robust workouts.  Crystal Moment (Borel / Borel) can be expected to make a good run at these with the second highest last out speed number which happened to be a victory at this distance.  Ask Eddy (Felix / Mason) could be the surprise with a decent last out speed number, a two race progression, and one endurance workout.  Let's play Oaklawn Park.

Santa Anita Saturday

Back to Gulfstream Park

We return to Gulfstream Park for the start of the horse racing weekend.

Gulfstream Park Race 8 {6 Furlongs~3 year old~fillies~Allowance}
Facinating little race with ten little fillies going to the gate.  Conditions should have included the qualification that a horse may not have raced at the distance of six furlongs as only two in her have.  A very good field nonetheless.  Wild About Sonny (Trujillo / Breen) has a very slight edge with the highest last out speed number at her only race and four excellent, peaking workouts.  Tap For Luck (J. Velazquez / Pletcher) will be the favorite and will challenge mightily coming off a long route with four solid workouts.  Expo Gold (Leparoux / Kenneally) looks ready to run a big race with the second highest last out speed number in her only race and three robust, peaking workouts.  Because I Like It (Leyva / Culyas) will rise to the occassion with an o.k. last out speed number and three strong workouts.  Let's play beautiful Gulfstream Park.

A Great Sunday at Gulfstream

We finish out our horse racing weekend at gorgeous Gulfstream Park.

Gulfstream Race 8 {Ft. Lauderdale~G3~1 1/16 mile~Turf~4 year old Up~Stakes}
An excellent group of twelve highly talented Turf horses are expected to make the start in this annual stakes race.  This group is so close in ability any one of them could pull off the victory.  Baletti (Cruz / Penna) appears to have the edge with the second highest last out speed number at a longer route, a two race progression, and three strong workouts.  Battle of Hastings [GB] will challenge with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and four stellar, peaking workouts.  Blues Street (Desormeaux / Pletcher) should have no trouble competing with this group despite coming off an extensive layoff.  He is a horse for the course, racing 80% in the money coupled with the highest (triple digit) speed number over the Gulfstream course and has put in four solid workouts in preparation for this race.  Get Stormy (Castellano / Bush) may be the favorite and deservedly so with the highest (tie) speed number at the distance, a two race progression, and three robust workouts.  Smart Bid (Prado / Motion) may well be the surprise in this race with a decent, yet comparative last out speed number, a two race progression, and four fantastic workouts.  Let's play the very competitive Ft. Lauderdale at Gulfstream Park.

Relishing the Sun on Saturday

Today we look at two great stakes races in the sunny climes of Florida and California.

A talented compact field of seven will make the start in this annual stakes race.  Rule (Castellano / Pletcher) looks like the one to beat despite coming off an extensive layoff.  He has two wins for two races at the distance and four fantastic workouts in preparation.  Soaring Empire (Lezcano / Gambolati) will challenge with the highest last out speed number and three superb workouts.  Morning Line (J. A small field of a half-dozen will go to the gate.  Aggie Engineer (Talamo / Gallagher) appears to be the one to beat with the highest last out speed number at a longer distance and three terrific workouts.  He will be the controlling speed in the race.  Spurrier (Bejarano / Baffert) will be the chief challenger with the second highest last out speed number at a longer route, a two race progression, and three robust workouts.  Dakota Phone (Rosario / Hollendorfer) will be in the mix with the third highest last out speed number at a longer route and three athletic workers.  Quindici Man (Valenzuela / Lewis) is a consistent sort that will be in there for a piece of the purse with the fourth highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and one sinewy workout.  Let's play a good race at Santa Anita.

Another New Day at Santa Anita

To close out the horse racing weekend we look at a downhill Turf race at beautiful Santa Anita.

A great group of eight fillies are expected to make the start in this race.  Rain threatens to take this off the Turf, but let's hope for the best.  Unzip Me (Bejarano / Jones) is the clear favorite with three wins in four tries at the downhill distance.  She holds the third highest last out speed number and has put in three favorable workouts.  Broken Dreams (Gomez / Proctor) appears to be ready for this contest with the fourth highest (tie) last out speed number and three terrific, peaking workouts.  La Nez (Talamo / Kruljac) will be the surprise with a decent last out speed number, a two race progression, and three well-built, peaking workouts.  Evening Jewel (Espinoza / Cassidy) will attempt to challenge with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and three solid, peaking workouts.  Lilly Fa Pootz (Rosario / Hollendorfer) can be counted on to be in the mix with the second highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and four fantastic, peaking workouts.  Let's give a downhill try at Santa Anita.

The Gals Set the Stage for 2011

Happy New Decade to you all !  May you cash well on every horse racing weekend this year and every year thereafter.

Happy Birthday to all horses young and old.

Today we start the New Year out with a couple of graded stakes for fillies and mares.  The gals lead the way in 2011.

Santa Anita Race 3 {Robert Frankel~G2~1 1/8 mile~Turf~3 year old Up~fillies/mares~Stakes}
A very short field of five will make the start of this race named after the legendary trainer.  Harmonious (Rosario / Shirreffs) will be the overwhelming favorite with the highest speed number overall and at the distance.  She posted a decent last out speed number over a longer route in her last and has put in three tremendous workouts.  She is the one to beat.  Eclair de Lune [GER] will attempt to challenge also coming off a longer route in the Breeder's Cup with a decent speed number and two solid, peaking workouts.  Spring Style [IRE] may prove to be the best of the rest with an o.k. last out speed number, a two race progression, and two strong workouts.  Since Harmonious can be expected to be the victor in this short field, our strategy will be to cash on a couple of the challengers.  Let's make Santa Anita our first of the New Year.
