Thursday Strategy Session: The 10 CENT Superfecta

Thursday Strategy Session

The 10 CENT Superfecta

The 10 CENT Superfecta may be the best bet on the wagering menu. While the Exacta and the Win wager lead the pack in terms of betting handle per each individual race, the 10 CENT Superfecta is wager that continues to gain in popularity. It can give you more bang for your buck.

There are three methods to be considered in putting together your 10 CENT Superfecta ticket. All are excellent ways to increase your strike race and return on investment.

The Lambrakis Method

We attribute this method to Paul N. Lambrakis, a serious Southern California handicapper. Hell, he wrote an excellent monograph (pictured above), The 10 CENT Superfecta Betting Guide. In it he delineates a method in which you eliminate horses without a chance, then work your way up from fourth position up to first position. As you work up from fourth to third you examine which horses will hit the board and place them in your third position. From third you determine which horses will hit the exacta. Finally from the second position you figure which horses will have a winning performance.

The monograph contains excellent charts that show what the cost of a ticket will be as you cobble it together. It is an excellent reference for the experienced 10 CENT Superfecta player as well as the novice horse player.

10 CENT Superfecta Box

A favorite among many journeyman horse players is the 10 CENT Superfecta Box, including this blog. It is the simplest play as you put together four horses for a total cost of $2.40 or five horses for a total cost of $12.00. Should you find your way to Las Vegas, it should be your preferred method of play as most race/sports books require a minimum $1.00 wager.

We have discussed in a previous blog post under what circumstances you should put the 10 CENT Superfecta Box in play. Particularly, it is best used when you have a field of horses in which any of them can be victorious.

Readers of this blog enjoy our Superfecta Sunday posts in which this is the feature wager. We will also use it frequently with our Stakes Saturday posts.

Key Performance Indicator Method

The third method is a simple one that allows the horse player to quickly put together a ticket uses the top stat in each handicapping criteria for the field. For example, the top last out speed number combined with the top average speed figure for the last three races, and the top speed number at the distance. List the top four horses for in each key performance criteria and align them accordingly in each of the four wagering positions in the 10 CENT Superfecta. It might look like something as follows:

Last Out Speed Figure--  4  /  2  /  3  /  5, 6

Average Last 3 Spd fig--  4  /  2  / 3

Top Spd fig at Distance--  4 /  6  /  5  /  7

Your 10 CENT Superfecta Ticket would then look like this:  4  /  2,6  / 2,6,3,5  /  2,6,3,5,7 and cost $1.80.

You would be surprised how many times this particular wager strategy hits, specifically in Six Furlong Sprints.

Other key performance indicators (KPI) can be utilized to formulate your 10 CENT Superfecta ticket. Best works, In the Money records over surface, at distance, over the track, and overall are just a few of the KPI angles to look at. Another KPI angle that can be extremely useful is the Jockey / Trainer in the money percentage and or win percentage, then add in their percentages when working together (combo). It can boost your strike rate nicely.

All of these methods can be tailored nicely to your handicapping arsenal when you approach the 10 CENT Superfecta wager. Obviously the odds of each of your selections dictate the payoff amount you will earn. Hopefully the odds will be with you when you undertake any or all of these methods.

Handicapping Basics for New or Novice Horseplayers

With limited sporting events going on due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many sports enthusiasts are looking at horse racing to fill the void. In fact, if one looks at the handles gathered by smaller tracks (Fonner in Nebraska and Will Rogers Downs in Oklahoma) you might surmise that our cousins in the sports betting realm are looking for action.

Golden Gate, Santa Anita, and Churchill Downs will get under way this horse racing weekend.  Horse racing leads the way to sports recovery.

What are some simple metrics a new or novice horseplayer can look at to make a somewhat intelligent selection in a given race? Without going deep into the weeds on how to decipher the past performances, there are two different data points to look at to pinpoint a strong selection in any given race. Speed numbers and basic Jockey / Trainer stats.

Speed Numbers.

Speed Numbers calculate the performance of a horse in its previous races. They are compiled by various purveyor's of past performances utilizing their proprietary formulas. Such figures allow horseplayers to compare the ability of the horses in a given race. The higher the speed number the better the past performance. You can find them in the box that displays the horses summary statistics and on each racing line for that horse.

The numbers or "key performance indicators" one should focus on is:
  • Last three Speed Numbers.
  • Speed number at the distance.
  • Average of the Last three Speed numbers.
All of these will assist you in ascertaining which horse may be the better horse in the field. Mind you this is a very basic approach, but you will be surprised how often these three "key performance indicators" predict the outcome of the race.

Jockey / Trainer Statistics

These statistics will also help in your overall analysis of any race. These are found on the past performance next to the Jockey's name as well as the Trainer's name. These are very basic, but they are a good indication of how strong both jockey and trainer are as they bring their charge to the race. Additionally you can find the Jockey/Trainer combo stat usually on the bottom right-hand corner of the past performance. This figure shows how well they perform when they team up.

Utilizing the Data

You can grab all of these data points to find the top contenders in any given race. Lay them out on a sheet of paper next to each entrant in the race and give it your analytic best. You will find that utilizing these very basic data points will help you make great picks and potentially round out your exotic (exacta, trifecta, superfecta, and pentafecta) plays.
