Downhill Turf Friday

Lovely Santa Anita opens its Fall meet today and we take a peek at an exciting downhill Turf sprint as part of our horse racing weekend enjoyment.

Santa Anita Race 3 {Senator Ken Maddy~G3~6 1/2 furlongs~downhill Turf~3 year old Up~fillies/mares~Stakes}
A small field of six speedy gals will make the start.  All appear to be well prepped with some serious workouts.  This should be a grand Turf race.

#2 Unzip Me (Bejarano / Jones) will be the speed of the race attempting to grap her thirteenth victory.  She holds the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and three hearty workouts.  She has the speed to take it to the wire.

Tapeta Sprint Thursday

Opening our horse racing weekend we look at a competitive sprint over the Tapeta surface at Presque Island downs this evening.

Presque Isle Downs Race 6 {5 1/2 furlongs~3 year old Up~fillies/mares~Allowance}
A very nice competitive field of ten will make the start in this early evening race.  All these gals have comparatively equal speed numbers over this surface.  Most have done well at this distance in prior outings.  Could be a quick, exciting race.

#4 Kiss For Dodie (Madrigal / Madrigal) will be the one to beat with the highest last out speed number, the second highest (four-way tie) speed number at the distance, and one solid workout.  She could hand just off the leader and explode in the stretch.

#3 Real Peace (Martinez / Martin) can be expected to be the speed in the race with the second highest (tie) last out speed number, a four race progression, and the best workout tab of the group securing three superb works.  She could hold on for a nice slice.

Turf Test at the Jersey Shore

It could be a little moist along the Jersey Shore as we conclude our horse racing weekend at the wonderful Monmouth Park.

Monmouth Park Race 10 {1 1/16 mile~Turf~3 year old Up~Allowance}
A good field of ten will step onto the grass for this race.  Most will be coming off a longer route in their last which should make for a competitive affair.  A battle between the forwardly placed and the closing types will ensue.

#4 Exclusive Strike (Lopez / Servis) will be the one to beat with the highest last out speed number, the highest speed number at the distance, and a two race progression.  Should be able to track the leaders and move forward in the stretch.  He has two drawbacks: no posted works and is approaching the ten race threshold.

#9 Mustang Island (Trujillo / Simon) will mount a favorable challenge with the fourth highest last out speed number, the third highest speed number at the distance, and two bold workouts.  He should be another tracking the pace ready to strike.

PA Derby Day

It's Stakes Saturday and we turn to look at the One Million dollar Pennsylvania Derby at Parx.  A great race on a great day.

A fierce group of nine competitors are expected to line up for this Fall classic.  All have near equal ability and there will be some surprises.  A terrific race should unfold.

#7 To Honor and Serve (Lezcano / Mott) appears to have a very slight edge with the highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and two premium workouts.  He can be expected to sit just off the pace ready for launch in the stretch.

Yes, it's a Belmont Park kind of Friday.  Today we look at a sprint on the dirt at that lovable venue.

Belmont Turf on Sunday

The close of our horse racing weekend features a Turf mile at Belmont Park, making it a Belmont Park horse racing weekend.  A very nice one indeed.

Belmont Park Race 9 {Noble Damsel~G3~1 mile~Turf~3 year old Up~fillies/mares~Stakes}
A solid field of seven will go to the gate for this graded stakes grass run.  All appear to be capable of pulling off the victory.  It could be quite a race.

#2 Aviate [GB] (Desormeaux / Mott) appears to be well wired for the win with the second highest last out speed number at a longer route and two tenacious, peaking workouts.  She could come flying through the stretch.
$1 WIN / SHOW.

#5 Unbridled Humor (Dominguez / Motion) will challenge with the highest last out speed number at a longer route and two strong workouts.  She could find herself up on the lead with the rest of the field gunning for her.  Two victories at this distance says she will attempt to hold them off.

A highly competitive field of eight will make the start in this annual affair.  Not a lot of speed is present, so it might have an element of Euro-style to it.  Slow fractions at the outset and then a mad dash to the wire.  An exciting race should develop.

#3 Hungry Island (Solis / McGaughey) has a slight edge with the highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and two strong workouts.  She could be well positioned for the fierce close that could develop.

Beautiful Vancouver

Let's close our horse racing weekend out by looking Northwest to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada for the BC Derby.  Gosh, the air up there must be crisp and fresh this time of year.  Great running weather for our equine athletes.

Hastings Park Race 9 {British Columbia Derby~G3~1 1/8 mile~3 year old Up~Stakes}
A superlatively deep field of twelve have their eyes on making the start in this annual contest.  There are a lot of front end running types in the field which makes it an interesting challenge.  Only a handful in the group have traveled the distance or longer.  It promises to be an exhilarating race.

#5 Jebrica (R. Baze / Penney) looks well suited for this race with the highest last out speed number over this same distance, a two race progression, and two strengthening workouts.  Could track and close nicely.

#4 Couldabenthewhisky (Mitchell / Jenne) is also coming back from the same race and distance as Jebrica.  He holds the second highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and two stout workouts.  He is another that could track what could be a very fluid pace.

Woodbine Fillies

To open up the horse racing weekend we look at the young fillies up at fabulous Woodbine in the great North.

These are always fun races to handicap, but go easy on the wagering.  This one stacks up as a very competitive field of ten.  Virtually any of these gals can win it as all but one will be trying this distance for the first time.  There is one first time starter in the field.

#2 Matadora (Contreras / Squires) appears to have the edge having gone this distance last time out with a comparatively decent speed number.  She is on a two race progression and has put in two stout, peaking workouts.  She may be tracking the leaders ready for a race in the stretch.

Saratoga Stakes

A beautiful Saturday for a Saratoga Stakes race.

Saratoga Race 10 {Woodward~G1~1 1/8 mile~3 year old Up~Stakes}
A most excellent group of eight horses will make the start in this summer annual.  A filly, Havre De Grace, will take on the boys.  The entire field has competed in some of the premiere races in North America.  All appear ready to run well.

#4 Rule (Castellano / Pletcher) appears to have a slight edge with the third highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and two solid workouts.  He is a speedster that could wire this field.
$1 WIN / SHOW.

#3 Giant Oak (Bridgmohan / Block) should be able to grab a piece with the fourth highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and two robust workouts.  He should have a strong pace to run at and get the job done.
$2 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests

#6 Havre De Grace (Dominguez / L. Jones) will take on the boys and some pretty big boys at that.  She holds the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and four well-built, peaking workouts.  This gal is ready and it would be no surprise if she pressed them into the stretch and ran away from them.

#8 Mambo Meister (Jara / Gleaves) will surprise with the highest last out speed number, a five race progression, and three sprinty, peaking workouts.  This guy looks like he will also press the pace and make his move at the turn into the stretch.  Certainly one to watch in this race.

Del Mar Friday

Another wonderful Friday to take a peak at a stakes race at lovely Del Mar.

Del Mar Race 6 {El Cajon~1 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
A nice even field of eight are expected to go to the gate.  All have competed at or near this route distance.  The field is equally matched any one of the runners could pull off a victory.

#5 Uncle Sam (Bejarano / Baffert) seemingly has the edge with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and four fierce, peaking workouts.  He could be the one to beat.
$2 SHOW.

#6 Shrug (Gomez / Gaines) could be the pace setter that holds on for the win or a piece of the purse pie.  He has the fourth highest (tie) last out speed number and three robust workouts.  This guy has the ability to wire the field.
$2 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests

#3 Sahara Sky (Rosario / Hollendorfer) appears ready to run a good race with the second highest last out speed number and four athletic workouts.  He could track and close well.

#8 Macho Dorado (Sutherland / Belvoir) is the distance specialist among the group with in the money performances over five races.  He also holds the second highest last out speed number and has put in three superb workouts.  Is a surprise in the offing?

Saratoga Youngsters

Starting off our horse racing weekend we look to the youngsters, perhaps some future stars, in a great stakes race at wonderful Saratoga.

Saratoga Race 9 {With Anticipation~G2~1 1/16 mile~Turf~2 year old~Stakes}
A talented field of nine are scheduled to make the start.  All are still developing a successful running style.  Most have covered this distance with the exception of two which will be stretching out to a route.  This should be a very competitive race.

#5 Splendiferous (Bridgmohan / Margolis) might have a slight edge with the highest last out speed number at this distance in his only start and has put in one strong workout.  With a solid pace to run at he could close this field down.
$1 WIN / SHOW.

#1 Captain Webb (J. Velazquez / Pletcher) should be one of the chief challengers with the third highest last out speed number in his only start and has put in two good workouts.  He looks to press the pace in order to get first jump in the stretch.
$1 PLACE / SHOW.

#6 State of Play (Dominguez / Motion) will be stretching out to a route from a decent last out sprint speed number and prepped with three endurance workouts.  He could also find himself forwardly place ready to pounce.
$2 SHOW.

#4 Dullahan (Desormeaux / Romans) will also be a contender with the second highest last out speed number competing at this distance, a three race progression, and one solid workout.  He could track the pace ready to strike.

#9 Optimizer (Albarado / Lukas) should improve off his first start which happened to be at this distance.  He has put in three robust, peaking workouts prepping for this one.
