Belmont Park Race 8 {1 1/16 mile~TURF~3 year old Up~Allowance}

#2 Odeon (C. Velasquez / Shirreffs) is a California invader coming off a longer route with the second highest last out speed number.  He has put in four solid workouts during a brief layoff.  This guy might be forwardly placed or just off the lead pack, ready to launch into the stretch.

A great group of seven 3-year old colts will enter the gate in this allowance feature.  There is little or no speed, but a number that could press the pace.  All in here have relatively comparable speed numbers.  Three were nominated to the Triple Crown.  It should be a boffo exciting race.

#5 Fighting Hussar (Espinoza / Palma) might have an edge with the third highest last out speed number, the highest speed number at the distance, a four race progression, and three tough peaking workouts.  This guy could be forwardly placed and fight on to the finish.

Superfecta Sunday already!  We take a long look at a Turf allowance at Belmont.

Belmont Park Race 8 {6 furlongs~inner TURF~3 year old Up~NY~Allowance}
An interesting group of twelve will take to the grass in this New York allowance feature.  There is plenty of speed coupled with forwardly placed types in this one.  A tremendous handicapping challenge awaits as many in here are coming off short and long layoffs.  Not to mention that a half dozen have not yet raced over the Turf.  An odd mix of runners.  Let's try to fasten together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket.

#11 Countknickerbocker (Castellano / Domino) might have a slight edge in this speed laden event.  He is coming off an extended layoff, but his last out prior to the layoff is the fourth highest speed number among this group.  He has worked diligently posting two robust workouts in the last thirty days.  Experience over the turf adds to his cause.

#8 Comandante (Maragh / Trombetta) should challenge despite coming off a layoff.  Prior to the layoff he holds the second highest last out speed number and has worked hard posting four strong workouts.  This will be his first on Turf and appears he will enjoy it.  He is our Bronze Horseshoe runner today.

Belmont beckons as we head into Friday.

Belmont Park Race 2 {1 mile~TURF~3 year old Up~NY~Maiden Special Weight}
A very peculiar field of nine will saunter onto the green.  This one is a tough one to call as any one of these in here could have a good day.  Not much speed, if any at all, opens it up to the one that aggressively seeks the lead.  Another horse players delight for this horse racing weekend.

Superfecta Sunday at Woodbine

Another thrilling Peakness is in the record books.   Unfortunately the Triple Crown drought continues and next year we will celebrate thirty-six years without one.

Today we go up North, virtually speaking, to cool Canada to take in another exhilarating stakes race on the poly track.

Woodbine Race 8 {Selene Stakes~G3~3 year old~fillies}
A fantastic field of eight fillies will jog to the gate in this annual affair.  There is enough speed to keep the pace honest with a few that like to be forwardly placed and a couple that will surely come off the pace.  All in here are equally matched which should elevate the challenge to put together a winning 20 CENT Superfecta box ticket.  Yes, Woodbine has a 20 CENT minimum on their superfecta tickets.  The race will be a very good one, no doubt, eh.

#8 Coffee Clique (Contreras / Lynch) might have an edge with the second highest last out speed number over Turf, a two race progression, and three robust workouts.  She should be able to track and close nicely into a fluid pace.  She has already notched a win over the synthetic surface in her only start on it.  She is our Bronze Horseshoe runner.
$2 SHOW.

#4 Overheard (DaSilva / Pierce) should challenge with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two superb workouts.  This gal is 100% in the money in five career starts.  Expect her to be forwardly placed ready to make a move.

#2 Nipssing (Bahen / Halden) may be the favorite with the third highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and four stellar, peaking workouts.  She is primed and ready having already scored four victories from five career starts.  If she gets her pace, she could be tough to beat.

#3 Spring Venture (Husbands / Casse) will contend with a couple of decent last out speed numbers in big races, two wins in three starts at this distance, and three stout workouts.  She could be forwardly placed over the poly track surface she enjoys.  This gal is one of the few fillies nominated to the Triple Crown.

Preakness Day 2013

Yes.  The second leg of the Triple Crown will be our race for Stakes Saturday.

Pimlico Race 12 {Preakness~G1~1 3/16 mile~3 year old~Stakes}
A fabulous field of nine will make their way to the starting gate for the running of the 138th Preakness Stakes.  This significantly reduced field from that of KD 139 will be gunning for Kentucky Derby winner Orb.  There is nice balance in this group between the speedsters, pressers, trackers and closers.  It will be an extremely exciting race.

#1 Orb (Rosario / McGaughey) will be the one to beat.  He holds the highest last out speed number, a six race progression, and three fine-tuned peaking workouts.  The only drawback to this splendid Malibu Moon colt is, he will be going for his sixth win in a row; a monumental task at this high level of competition.  Still, he should get a favorable pace set-up and swing gallantly into the stretch.  Not much value will be offered on him, however.
$1 WIN / $1 SHOW.

#5 Mylute (Napravnik / Amoss) should challenge coming into the stretch.  This fifth place finisher in KD 139 appears geared for another big performance holding the second highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and three diligent workouts.  This son of Midnight Lute by the Stage Stop dam should take another step forward.  Expect him to come a running right off Orb's flank.
$1 PLACE / $2 SHOW.

#4 Departing (Hernandez / Stall) is one of three new shooters in this big race along the Triple Crown Trail.  He was last seen winning the Illinois Derby at gritty Hawthorne Race Course near Chicago.  He holds the third highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two good workouts.  This son of War Front can be expected to improve once again with a nice tracking effort.
$2 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests

#8 Governor Charlie (M. Garcia / Baffert) is another new shooter looking to dethrone the great Orb.  He holds the third highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and three smoking workouts.  This other son of Midnight Lute by Silverbulletday should be forwardly placed biding his time to make a move.

#6 Oxbow (Stevens / Lukas) will be making his ninth start in a row uninterrupted by a freshening or layoff.  A tall task lies ahead for this son of Awesome Again and dam, Tizamazing.  There is no doubt he can get the distance.  He holds two solid last out speed numbers despite a disappointing finish in KD 139.  This fine colt has put in three peaking workouts in the last thirty days.  With a versatile running style and the most experienced jockey, Gary Stevens, in the irons, he could surprise big time.

10 CENT Superfecta
Yes!! They have one, but it must total at least a dollar.

#1 Orb / #5 Mylute, #4 Departing / #5, #4, #8 Govenor Charlie, #6 Oxbow / #5, #4, #8, #6.

Pimlico Race 10 {Black Eyed Susan~G2~1 1/8 mile~3 year old~fillies~Stakes}
A wonderful field of nine will go to the gate in this annual race.  There is a massive amount of speed in here.  If left uncontrolled, it could result in some real surprises.  Only two have gone this distance and only two have raced in a grade one last out.  It should be a barn burner of a race.

#7 Emollient (Smith / Mott) looks to have the edge if she can run a controlled pressing attack.  She holds the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and three solid peaking workouts.  She has gone this distance and is coming off a grade one at Keeneland.
$2 SHOW.

#3 Fiftyshadesofhay (Rosario / Baffert) will challenge with the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and three strong workouts.  She should be forwardly placed ready to pounce. This gal is the other that is coming out of a grade one.
$2 SHOW.

A terrific field of eight high caliber horses have entered this race.  There is enough speedy types in here to make it a trackers dream race.  It will be a very good race, but a little difficult to sew together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket.  Let's give it a whirl.

#7 Big Business (C. Velasquez / Jacobson) appears ready to triumph with the second highest (tie) last out speed number, a three race progression, and two sharp peaking workouts.  He could be in the best position to take advantage of a hot pace. The big guy will be our Bronze Horseshoe runner.

A great group of eleven high caliber horses will make their way to the starting gate in this annual graded stakes race.  The race comes up a little short on speed, but there are several that should find themselves forwardly placed assuring a reasonable pace.  All but two are Triple Crown nominated.  Any one of these horses are capable of the win.  These very talented horses will continue to make bank for their connections as their racing career rolls on, no matter the outcome here.  It will be a fantastic race.

Belmont Park Race 7 {1 mile~3 year old~Optional Claiming}
A very nice group of eight will trot to the gate in this feature race.  There is enough speed in this one to keep the pace honest.  All the horses are converging on Belmont from differing tracks up and down the East coast.  It should be a very interesting race.

#8 Tenango (Cohen / Jacobson) has a slight edge with the third highest last out speed number and one peaking workout.  He holds an impressive 90% in the money record in ten career starts.  This guy has the ability to press or track the pace to great benefit.
$1 WIN / $1 SHOW.

#3 Make Your Move (Chamafi / McLaughlin) will challenge with the fourth highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and three diligent workouts.  He should be tracking the pace ready to close swiftly.
$1 SHOW.

#6 Risk Factor (Prado / Pecoraro) should be prominent in the foray with the highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and two strong workouts.  Expect this guy to be forwardly placed ready to quicken.
$1 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests

#4 Much Stronger (C. Velasquez / Jacobson) should be in the mix with his front running style.  He shows the second highest last out speed number as well as the highest speed number at the distance of this group.

#7 Mister Woolman (Lezcano / Zito) could be in the hunt coming off a longer route and showing two decent last out speed numbers.  He also holds the third highest speed number at the distance.  Two strengthening workouts adds to his cause.

Superfecta Sunday at Hollywood, Episode 2

After a thrilling Kentucky Derby yesterday, we take in a sprint stakes across the country in lovely California.

Betfair Hollywood Park Race 3 {Time to Leave~5 furlongs~3 year old Up~fillies/mares~Stakes}
A small group of seven gals will saunter onto the track for this feature stakes race.  There is plenty of speed in here.  Only two like to come from off the pace and could have an enjoyable ride if things get too fast and furious.  It does not appear to be too easy of a 10 CENT Superfecta box to cobble together, but try we must.

#3 Teddy's Promise (V. Espinoza / Ellis) appears to have a solid edge with the highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and four healthy, peaking workouts.  She should be forwardly placed and has done well over the Hollywood cushion track.

#7 Hidinginplainsight (Talamo / Puype) will challenge with the third highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and four superb workouts that include two bullets.  She has the tactical speed to feel out the pace and then run through it.  She is our Bronze Horseshoe runner today.
$2 SHOW.

#6 Magical Bard (Bejarano / Palma) should be in contention with the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two robust peaking workouts.  She should be forwardly placed looking to set a comfortable tempo.

#5 Journaliste [ARG] (Leparoux / Sadler) is coming off a layoff looking to make another improvement in her third North American start; she ran well in her native Argentina.  This gal likes to come off the pace and hopefully will have enough ground to do so in this short sprint.  She has had a couple of decent last out speed numbers, a two race progression, and has put in three super speedy works prepping for this race.  She could surprise.

10 CENT Superfecta Box ($2.40)

#3 Teddy's Promise  +  #7 Hidinginplainsight  +  #6 Magical Bard  +  #5 Journaliste [ARG].

It's Time for KD 139

Magnificent Churchill Downs beckons many a handicapper, amateur and pro alike, on this first Saturday in May for a chance to take a share of the wagering pool in America's greatest horse race, The Kentucky Derby.

Churchill Downs Race 11 {Kentucky Derby 139~G1~1 1/4 mile~3 year old~Stakes}

There will be a field of 19 handsome colts walking onto the track with the huge Churchill Downs crowd cheering on their favorites.  #1 Black Onyx has scratched due to an ankle chip.  It should be a great Stakes Saturday.

Observations

Weather:  According to Weather.com there is a 40% chance of showers likely to begin around 16:00.  That chance increases to 50% around 18:00.  The KD 139 is scheduled to go off at 18:24 (6:24 pm EDT)  Depending on the strength of that rain the track may come up muddy, sloppy, or good.  This could be a key handicapping data point.  Who are the mudders in the race?

Pace:  Expect it to be strong.  There are several in the field who are speedsters or definitely like to be forwardly placed.  #2 Oxbow can be considered a speedy presser. Ditto for #8 Goldencents.  Both #7 Giant Finish and #11 Lines of Battle have a fondness for pressing the pace.  Another speedster / presser is #13 Falling Sky.  One of the Favorites, #14 Verrazano, likes to sit close to the pace.  Two with tactical speed who like to get a feel on how the pace develops are #17 Will Take Charge and #20 Vyjack.  If the pace is modest any one of these fellas could win it.  The balance of the field are trackers or closers or any combination in between.  Should the pace become heated, count on one of the horses that relish coming from off the pace to wear the roses.

Random Thoughts:  Not one of these fine colts has gone this distance of a mile and a quarter (1 1/4 mile).  The only horse that has raced close to it was #11 Lines of Battle, winning convincingly, the UAE Derby on a Tapeta (synthetic) surface at a distance of 1 3/16 mile.  All have had tremendous workouts leading up to this years Derby.  Among the more notable are #12 Its My Lucky Day with a strengthening three peaking works,  #13 Falling Sky with two wickedly good bullet works, and #17 Will Take Charge with four endurance peaking works.  Speed figures are relatively comparable.  Triple digit Beyer scores are indicative of a superior horse.  Those that have them include; #8 Goldencents (105), #16 Verrazano (105), #12 Its My Lucky Day (104), #3 Revolutionary (102) and for good measure, #11 Lines of Battle established a 111 Racing Post rating for his win in the UAE Derby.  The entire field of three year olds have been well conditioned by their trainers and should see more improvement in their racing career.

The Picks

#16 Orb (Rosario / McGaughey) is the morning line favorite.  He has continued to improve with virtually every race he has run holding the longest race progression of six.  This stellar son of Malibu Moon out of the Lady Liberty mare has the second highest last out speed number and has put in three superb peaking workouts.  This colt is a consistent tracker/closers who is quite capable of running down this field with a good trip.
$2 WIN / $3 PLACE / $5 SHOW.

#5 Normandy Invasion (Castellano / C. Brown) will challenge mightily with a couple of very good improving last out speed numbers, a two race progression, and two exciting workouts.  This son of Tapit out of the mare Boston Lady will be running late.  Should their be a grueling pace, expect him to launch a ferocious kick
$2 PLACE / $3 SHOW.

#3 Revolutionary (Borel / Pletcher) has the distinct advantage of having the Prince of Churchill riding him.  Calvin Borel has already won three Kentucky Derby's in this century.  This son of War Pass out of the mare, Runup The Colors, has been well primed with two excellent last out speed numbers, a two race progression, and two robust workouts. His tracking/closing running style will suit him well.
$2 SHOW.

#11 Lines of Battle (Moore / O'Brien) should contend favourably among this talented field.  He holds a great last out Racing Post rating and is in the midst of a two race progression.  This son of War Front and mare, Black Speck, has raced well in Ireland and Great Britain.  Expect this dark brown colt to stay close to the leaders biding his time for a strike through the turn.
$2 SHOW.

Superfecta
There is no 10 CENT Superfecta offered on Derby Day.  However we will go with the one dollar minimum.  After all it is the Derby.
#16 Orb / #5 Normandy Invasion / #3 Revolutionary / #11 Lines of Battle.

#8 Dreaming of Julia (J. Velazquez / Pletcher) is in best position to win this one with a superb pressing / tracking running style.  She holds the highest speed number at the distance which also is the highest last out speed number.  This wonderful filly is working a four race progression and has put in three solid works during a brief freshening.  Definitely the one to beat.

#4 Unlimited Budget (Castellano / Pletcher) will challenge with her superb tactical speed.  World class trainer, Todd Pletcher, has four in this race to go along with the five he has in KD 139.  This gal may give him the exacta with the second highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and three fierce workouts.  She has already gone this distance securing a victory.
$2 SHOW.

#5 Seaneen Girl (Napravnik / Flint) could also challenge particularly with her tracking running style.  She has a couple of decent last out speed numbers and has improved in each of her last six races.  This lass has already scored a victory over the Churchill track and has put in three mighty peaking workouts.  Coming off a nice freshening, she should fire convincingly.
$2 SHOW.

Additional Wagering Interests

#11 Close Hatches (Rosario / Mott) should be in the hunt with a couple of decent last out speed numbers, a three race progression, and two terrific workouts.  She will be part of the speed force on the front end with the ability to hold on for a piece of the purse pie.

#6 Princess of Sylmar (Smith / Pletcher) could surprise with a couple of decent last out speed numbers and showing continued improvement setting a two race progression.  This gal is one of four to have already successfully gone this distance.  She is a tracker that will take advantage of a steamy pace.

Betfair Hollywood Park Race 7 {7 1/2 furlongs~3 year old Up~Optional Claiming}
A really tight field of eight will go to the gate in this feature race.  The race comes up a little light on speed which may benefit those that like to be forwardly placed.  All of the racers in this event can be considered equally capable of pulling off the victory.

#8 Keyboard Courage (T. Baze / P. Miller) might have a slight edge with the highest last out speed number at a mile route, a two race progression, and three superb workouts.  This guy has a versatile running style that will benefit him well in this one.  He could be forwardly placed ready to roll.
