Derby Points on a Stakes Saturday

 We go to New Orleans for another race with Derby points at stake. Some great racing on a fine Stakes Saturday.

Fair Grounds Race 12 {Lecomte Stakes~G3~1 1/16 mile~3 year-old~graded Stakes}

A talented group of fourteen colts and geldings will go to the gate in this annual race.

Past Performances used:  Equibase.

There is plenty of speed in this race to create a furious pace. Speed numbers are fairly close with only one hitting a triple digit. All have been well prepped for improvement. Only six have raced over the Fair Grounds track. Eight have gone this distance while the rest will stretch out. This should be a highly competitive race.

#4 Magnitude (J. Ortiz / Asmussen) has already hit the board in both of his races at this distance. He comes in with a good last out speed fig and two strong peaking workouts. This guy should be forwardly placed sitting right off the speedsters. A son of Not This Time, he is 60% in the money from five starts.

$2 WIN  /  $3 PLACE  /  #5 SHOW.

#6 Golden Afternoon (Concepcion / Vaccarrezza) will be following the leaders ready to strike in the stretch. He holds a very good last out speed number and three sharp peaking workouts. This guy will make the surface switch from Turf to dirt. A son of Goldencents, he is 100% in the money from three starts.

$2 PLACE  /  $3 SHOW.

#5 Optical (Graham / Desormeaux) is another with a very good last out speed number and four powerful peaking workouts. He should be part of the leading pack of runners. This gelding comes in from Churchill Downs. A son of City of Light, he is 42% in the money from seven starts.

#11 Disco Time (Geroux / B. Cox) holds the third highest last out speed number and four hearty workouts. He will be stretching out by half a furlong to this distance. This lad will also be part of the lead pack. Another son of Not This Time, he holds a 100% win rate from two starts.

#1 Innovator (Torres / Lukas) comes in from Oaklawn Park with the highest last out speed number and two robust workouts. He could be leading the pack of speedsters over the track. This colt will stretch out and try the Fair Grounds dirt for the first time. A son of Authentic, he is 72% in the money from seven starts.

#9 Dapper Moon (Morales / D. Stewart) should track the pace closely. He holds the second highest last out speed number and two sound workouts. This guy has a win over the Fair Grounds track. A son of Malibu Moon, he is 50% in the money from six starts.

Stakes Saturday with Kentucky Derby Points on the Line

 With many tracks cancelling today due to weather conditions we go to NOLA for a good Derby Point race.

Fair Grounds Race 13 {Lecomte Stakes~G3~1 1/16 mile~3 year-old~Grades Stakes}

A solid group of eight will go to the gate in this annual Kentucky Derby prep.

Past Performances used:  Equibase.

Despite the modest field, there is plenty of speed to carry the pace forward. Speed figs are fairly close. Half the field has raced over the Fair Grounds course. All have been well prepped for this race. On a day with few races going this should be a good one.

#2 Nash (Geroux / B. Cox) has the tactical speed to stay the course no matter what pace develops. He holds the third highest last out speed number and two strong workouts. This guy loves the dirt, distance, and track. A son of Medaglia d'Oro, he is 100% in the money from three starts.

#7 Track Phantom (Rosario / Asmussen) is the deserved favorite seeking his third win in a row. He holds the second highest last out speed number and two sound peaking workouts. He should be the controlling speed. A son of Quality Road, he is 100% in the money from four starts.

#6 Lat Long (B. Hernandez / McPeek) comes in from Oaklawn with a decent last out speed number and two hearty workouts. He should track the pace closely. This guy loves the dirt and distance. It will be his first start over the Fair Grounds oval. A son of Liam's Map, he is 100% in the money from five starts.

Stakes Saturday in NOLA

 The road to this year's Kentucky Derby begins in earnest down in New Orleans, Louisiana as we take in a key race along the Derby trail on this Stakes Saturday.

Fair Grounds Racecourse Race 13 {LeComte~G3~1 1/16 mile~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

Kentucky Derby points are on the line as a reduced field of eight go to the gate in this annual event.

Past Performances used:  Drf Classic.

This field contains significant speed and forwardly placed types to insure a very fast pace. Speed numbers are extremely close among these Derby aspirants. Two have raced over the Fair Grounds track. The rest will be racing over the track for the first time. It should be an exceptionally good race.

#1 Midnight Bourbon (Santana / Asmussen) will be stretching out to this distance with the third highest (3-way tie) last out speed number and three strong workouts. This colt should be tracking the pace very closely ready to strike in the stretch. A son of Tiznow, he is 75% in the money from four career starts.

$1 WIN  /  $2 PLACE  /  $3 SHOW.

#10 Mandaloun (Geroux / B. Cox) will also be stretching out in his third career start. He holds the highest last out speed number and four serious peaking workouts. This guy should track the pace and explode into the stretch. A son of Into Mischief, he holds a 100% win record in his two career starts.

$1 PLACE  /  $2 SHOW.

#4 Proxy (Murrill / Stidham) already has two wins from two starts at this distance. He comes in  sharing the third highest last out speed number and two solid workouts. He should be should be part of the speed congregation that makes up the bulk of this field. A son of Tapit, he is 100% in the money from three career starts.

$2 SHOW.

#6 Game Day Play (G. Saez / Calhoun) is yet another that will be stretching out to this distance. His last three races have been respectable and he has put in three powerful workouts prepping for this race. Look for him to race close to the pace. A son of Violence, he holds a 50% win rate from four career starts.

Aqueduct R8.  Rego Park Stakes.  We completely fumbled our 10 CENT Superfecta play scoring only one of the four wagering interests required to cash. Superfecta went 8-6-7-3.

Our Bronze Horseshoe runner, Windy Nations, finished 5th.

Bankroll takes a plunge to $24.92.

Long on Turf for Superfecta Sunday

On this Superfecta Sunday we take a look at a long Turf race in Southern California.

Santa Anita Park Race 8 {Astra~G3~1 1/2 mile~TURF~4 year-old Up~Fillies/Mares~Graded Stakes}

A nice field of nine will hit the green in this annual affair. There is plenty of speed to maintain a swift pace. Speed numbers are very close making it any of these ladies race. It should be one of the most exciting races on the card. Our task is to string together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta box ticket.

#5 Plein Air [IRE] (Van Dyke / Baffert) comes in from an extended layoff looking for the victory. She has the highest speed number at this distance coupled with two wins from three starts. She could be controlling pace. A vigorous, peaking four work tab adds to her luster. This miss is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.
$2 SHOW.

#9 India Mantuana (T. Baze / Bell) should challenge from a forwardly placed position. She holds the highest (tie) last out speed number and four powerful workouts. This gal is 50% in the money from twenty-four starts. She appears to be in good form and ready to stretch out for the distance.

#8 K P Pergolicious [IRE] (Smith / Mullins) should contend having placed second last out against much tougher. She holds the second highest last out speed number and two hearty workouts. She loves the surface and the Santa Anita course. A strong pace will give her the advantage heading into the stretch.

#10 Pantsonfire [IRE] (Prat / Baltas) will be in the mix particularly with a swift pace. She holds the second highest (tie) pace at the distance and is one of three to compete at this marathon distance. A fine workout tab of four works gives her a little boost. She is 85% in the money over the Santa Anita course from seven tries.

Fair Grounds Race Course R12.  Lecomte Stakes-G3. Like a sailor on a Bourbon Street bender we got bombed in this race. Our first pick, Tight Ten, finished 10th.  Our second pick, Chase the Ghost, finished 6th.  Our third pick, Roiland, finished 7th.
Superfecta went 8-6-13-1.
