Southwest Stakes Saturday

 We get after another Kentucky Derby prep out in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Oaklawn Park Race 11 {Southwest Stakes~G3~1 1/16 mile~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

A reduced field of eleven will go to the gate in this annual contest.

Past Performances used:  Equibase.

This talented group will be looking to show continued improvement and grab Kentucky Derby points. There is a plethora of speed that should create a scorching pace which could benefit those coming from off the pace. Speed figures are very close. It should be a highly competitive race. Roughly half the field have experience over the Oaklawn dirt. It should be the most tremendous race of today's Derby preps across the country.

#4 Otto the Conqueror (Rosario / Asmussen) will be seeking his fourth win in a row. He holds a good last out speed fig and two hearty workouts. This will be his first try over the Oaklawn track. He should be forwardly placed. This colt should relish the stretch-out. A son of Kentucky Derby winner, Street Sense, he is 100% in the money from four starts.

$2 WIN  /  $3 PLACE  /  $5 SHOW.

#6 Liberal Arts (Torres / Medina) will be tracking the pace ready to strike in the stretch with the fourth highest (tie) last out speed number and four strong peaking workouts. He has already produced a win at this distance. A son of Arrogate, he is 100% in the money from five starts.

$2 PLACE  /  $3 SHOW.

#5 Wynstock (Frey / Baffert) is on the improve and will challenge on the front-end. he also has a win at this distance. This will be his first start over the Oaklawn oval. He has a dynamic workout tab of three peaking workouts. A son of Solomini, he has a win rate of 50% from four starts.

#11 Just Steel (Vazquez / Lukas) is a very consistent type with the second highest last out speed number and two robust workouts. He has the tactical speed to stay the pace. He loves the dirt, distance, and track. A son of Triple Crown winner, Justify, he is 62% in the money from eight starts.

#9 Linebacker (Esquivel / Blair) has it the board in all three of his starts. Two solid workouts will aid him in this race. He should track the pace and strike in the stretch. This guy likes the dirt, distance,and track. A son of Bolt d'Oro, he is 100% itm from three starts.

#8 Common Defense (Leparoux / McPeek) is sitting on a great race in his third start with two solid workouts. He is another that will join the tracker pack. A son of Karakonite [JPN], he is 100% in the money from two starts.

Superfecta Sunday in the Warm Southwest

On this Superfecta Sunday we take in a nice Stakes race for New Mexico bred's.

Sunland Park Race 10 {Red Hedeman Mile Stakes~1 mile~3 year-old~NM~Stakes}

A wholesome field of ten will go to the gate in this feature stakes race. There is plenty of speed to keep the pace swift. Speed numbers for this bunch are very close giving them all a chance to have their picture taken. Our task is to rope together a winning 10 CENT Superfecta Box ticket. It should be an exceptionally good race.

#2 Go Now Go (Laviolette / Fincher) looks ready to take a giant step forward with second highest (3-way tie) last out speed number and two strong workouts. He has won twice at this distance from two starts. This son of Laugh Track, is 75% in the money from eight career starts. This guy is our Bronze Horseshoe selection.
$3 SHOW.

#6 Ancient Land (L. Contreras / Ca. Lambert) looks to be the favorite with the highest last out speed number and three hearty workouts. He is going for his third win in a row. A son of Monterrey Jazz, he is 66% in the money from nine career starts. He should travel close to the pace.

#5 Cerveza (Chirinos / Fincher) could be in the mix with a couple of challenging last out speed numbers, but holds the fourth highest speed number over the surface. He has put in two stamina producing workouts in preparation for this race. A son of Atilla's Storm, should be forwardly placed.

#4 Effort N Results (Tohill / Marr) should challenge with the fourth highest (tie) last out speed number and two sound workouts. This guy is 100% in the money from three career starts. A son of Shame on Charlie, he should track and close in the stretch.

Holiday Monday Racing in Arkansas

For this President's Day we take in another Kentucky Derby prep race down in Arkansas.

Oaklawn Park Race 9 {Southwest Stakes~G3~1 1/16 mile~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

Another fine group of nine Kentucky Derby aspirants will go to the gate in this annual Derby prep. There is enough speed to give it a speedy pace. Speed numbers are very close giving them all a chance to obtain the ten KD points that will go to the winner. It should be a fantastic race.

#2 Silver Prospector (Santana / Asmussen) looks like he might have an edge with the fourth highest last out speed number and three superb peaking workouts. This guy has notched a win at this distance. A son of Declaration of War, he should be tracking the pace closely and strike in the stretch.
$2 WIN  /  $3 SHOW.

#4 Gold Street (M. Garcia / Asmussen) will be seeking his fourth win in a row after hitting the highest last out speed number in his most recent race. Add to that, three hearty peaking workouts. This guy will be stretching out to this distance for this race. A son of Street Boss, he should be part of the pace scenario.
$2 SHOW.

#6 Chase Tracker (J. Velazquez / Pletcher) will challenge after obtaining a decent last out speed number at a longer route and putting in four excellent workouts. He comes in from Aqueduct for this contest. A son of Verrazano, he should be tracking the pace closely ready to spring into the stretch.

#3 Shoplifted (B. Hernandez / Asmussen) should benefit from a speedy pace. This guy shares the fourth highest last out speed number and two sound peaking workouts. He appears to enjoy the surface and the track. A son of Into Mischief, he is 66% in the money from six career starts.

Santa Anita R7.  Sweet Life Stakes--G3.  We scored on our 10 CENT Superfecta Box effort capturing all four of the wagering interests required. Superfecta went 6-5-7-2. it paid a very modest $11.32.
Our Bronze Horseshoe selection, Roadrunner's Honor, finished 3rd for show money of $4.80.
Bankroll gets a bump to $94.78.

Furlong Friday at Fair Grounds

A beautiful today is expected in New Orleans as we take a stab at Furlong Friday.

Fair Grounds Race 7 {6 Furlongs~4 year-old Up~Allowance Optional Claiming}

A good group of eight will go to the gate. There is enough pace to produce solid fractions. Speed numbers are very close giving this race a nice competitive feel to it. Most in here are coming out of allowance races with a modest freshening. It should be a quality event.

#4 Speightsong (C. Hernandez / Faucheaux) might have the advantage with the highest (three-way tie) last out speed number, and one good workout. He loves the dirt surface, the distance and the Fairgrounds track. This guy should be tracking the pace closely ready to spring forward into the stretch.
$1 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests

#2 Pulling G's (B. Hernandez / Howard) may go off as the favorite with the second highest last out speed number and four superb peaking workouts. He holds the highest speed number at the distance. This lad will be tracking the speedy pace and strike in the stretch.

#7 Luna de Loco (Geroux / Asmussen) should challenge sharing the highest last out speed number, working a two race progression, and putting in four sound peaking workouts. He is another that tracker looking for a swift pace. This guy should show some improvement.

#6 Cash Bonus (Flores / Amoss)  is coming out of a longer sprint in his last out effort where is ranks as fourth best (tie) among this group. He has put in a solid workout during the freshening. This guy may be closer to the pace seeking to grab a piece of the purse pie.

Oaklawn Park R9.  Southwest Stakes--G3.  Our first pick, Lookin at Lee, finished 3rd for show money of $5.10.  Our second pick, One Liner, won (1st) for show money of $3.40.
We hit three of four on our 10 CENT Superfecta box play.
Superfecta went 11-8-4-2.
Bankroll drops nine dimes to settle at $93.67.

Holiday Racing in Arkansas

Happy President's Day.

For some Holiday racing we take a peek at a Derby Prep down in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Oaklawn Park Race 9  {Southwest Stakes~G3~1 1/16 mile~3 year-old~graded Stakes}

A sensational group of twelve will go to the gate in search of Derby points to make it into the gate for KD 143. There is enough speed to make a serious pace. Speed numbers are fairly close for this crop of improving horses. Only one has not been nominated to the Triple Crown. With a high level of competitiveness, this race is certainly a handicappers dream.

#4 Lookin at Lee (Santana / Asmussen) might have the edge particularly if the pace heats up. he shows a couple of good last out speed numbers, a six race progression, and three superb peaking workouts. This lad should show improvement in his first start as a three year-old. A son of Looking at Lucky, he should track and close swiftly.
$2 WIN  /  $3 SHOW.

#11 One Liner (J. Velazquez / Pletcher) should challenge as he stretches out to a route for the first time. He holds the third highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two sharp workouts. He will be seeking his third win in a row. A son of Into Mischief, he should be forwardly placed ready to roll.
$2 SHOW.

#8 Petrov (J. Ortiz / Moquett) should contend with the fourth highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and two stout workouts. He is 100% in the money from three career starts. A son of Flatter, he should find himself a close tracking position and spring into the stretch.

#13 Chief Know It All (Rocco / Cox) could challenge from the outside post. This guy holds a couple of decent last out speed numbers where he cashed in both races. Additionally, he is working a two race progression and has put in two sound workouts. A son of Flashy Bull, he has the tactical speed to fit the pace.
