Stakes Saturday Derby Prep in Tampa

More Derby points are on the line on this Stakes Saturday. We take in a great race in Tampa, Florida.

Tampa Bay Downs Race 10 {Sam F. Davis~G3~1 1/16 mile~3 year-old~Graded Stakes}

A modest field of seven will go to the gate in this annual Kentucky Derby 144 prep race. There is some speed to keep the pace honest. Speed numbers are fairly close as each of these guys show improvement as they begin their 3 year-old season. It should be a thrilling race.

#3 Vino Russo (J. Velazquez / Pletcher) might pull off the victory as he embarks on his third win in a row. He holds a couple of decent last out speed numbers and four earnest peaking workouts. A son of Curlin, he will be stretching out to this distance after a victory over the Tampa Bay track. Expect him to be forwardly placed.
$1 WIN  /  $2 PLACE  /  $3 SHOW.

#6 Catholic Boy (Franco / Thomas) should go off as the favorite as he begins his three year-old season. He holds the highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and four hearty, peaking workouts. A son of More Than Ready, he should be tracking the pace closely ready to strike.
$1 PLACE  /  $2 SHOW.

#2 Flameaway (J. Lezcano  / Casse) should challenge with the second highest last out speed number, a four race progression, and two stout workouts. He has the tactical speed to be on the pace from the start. A son of Scat Daddy, he has already scored four wins from six starts.
$1 SHOW.

#4 Septimus Severus (J. Ortiz / Weaver) could surprise with a couple of decent last out speed numbers and one sound workout. He is 100% in the money from two career starts. This son of Roman Ruler, should take up a tracking position.
