Belmont and Calder Opening Day Two

We are exactly a week away from the greatest American horse race, the Kentucky Derby.  A nice race to watch today will be the Cliff's Edge Derby Trial.  It should give a little bit of the feel of how Churchill Downs will lay and play leading up to KD 137 next Saturday.

Today is Saturday Stakes day.  We will look at a race at Calder and one at Belmont on Day two of their Spring openings.

Calder Race Course Race 9 {Miami Mile~G3~1 mile~Turf~3 year old Up~Stakes}
A quality field of eight will race in this annual stakes competition.  There are speedsters, trackers, and closers ready to run.  Most will be making the third start of their form cycle so should be primed  for a great race.

#7 Mambo Meister (P Lopez / Gleaves) is one of two horses coming off a layoff, but looks well prepped with the highest speed number at the distance and five stout, peaking workouts.  This defending champ of the Miami Mile looks ready to run.
$1 WIN / SHOW.

#3 Voodoo Swinge (Bravo / Clement) will be running late, challenging for the win with the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and two robust workouts.
$1 PLACE / SHOW.

#2 Jackson Bend (Santiago / Cold) will be making his first Turf start of his career.  This tough little colt looks ready to challenge, particularly if he takes to the Turf surface.  He has the highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and one high quality workout.  Could be the upset.
$2 SHOW.

Other Wagering Interests

#8 Feels All Right [IRE] (P. Lopez / Gleaves) appears strong enough to grab a piece of the purse pie with a couple of decent last out speed numbers at a longer route, a three race progression, and one strong workout.

#1 Successful Mission (Trujillo / Plesa) should be in the mix with the third highest last out speed number and one athletic workout.  He also holds the second highest speed number at the distance.

10 CENT Superfecta

#7 Mambo Meister / #3 Voodoo Swinge / #2 Jackson Bend / #8 Feels All Right [IRE], #1 Successful Mission.

Belmont Park Race 9 {Westchester~G3~1 mile~3 year old Up~Stakes}
This race shapes up as a nice little mile race featuring a talented field of six.  It will be a compfortable pace for all these guys and may come down to who is the best prepped for this race.

#5 Haynesfield (Dominguez / Asmussen) performs admirably off the layoff.  He holds the highest speed number at this distance as well as being 100% in the money at two races at the mile distance.  His four peaking workouts is best among the field.  Clearly the one to beat.
$1 WIN / SHOW.

#6 Christmas for Liam (Castellano / Pletcher) has been making great progress in his five race career and could challenge for the win.  He has the third highest (tie) last out speed number, a three race progression, and two hearty workouts.
$1 PLACE / SHOW.

#4 Soaring Empire (Lezcano / Gambalati) looks well suited for this race with the second highest last out speed number, a two race progression, and three solid, peaking workouts.  He will challenge for the victory in the stretch.
$2 SHOW.

10 CENT Superfecta

The small field precludes a 10 CENT Superfecta.
