Furlong Friday in Illinois

On the eve of the Illinois Derby we take a look at a Maiden Sprint at that grand race course, Hawthorne.

Hawthorne Race 8 {6 furlongs~3 year-old Up~fillies/mares~Maiden}
A good group of nine will make their start in this maiden race. It comes up light on speed, though there are two first time starters that may be sent to fly. Those that have raced have fairly close speed numbers. It should be a competitive and interesting race.

#2 Smelly Cat (Esquivel / Robertson) might have the edge with the highest last out speed number at a route, a two race progression, and one bullet workout. She drops in class for this one which aids her cause. This gal will be tracking the pace.

Other Wagering Interests

#7 Vivorilla (Lopez / Rodriguez) should challenge with the fourth highest last out speed number and two robust workouts. She appears to be in good form for her fourth career start. This gal is another that will be tracking the pace.

#9 Sacred Canyon (T. Thornton / Kirby) should be in contention with the third highest last out speed number, a three race progression, and three hearty workouts. She will be moving up in class for this race, but appears ready to take on better.

#4 Canadian Candy (Cardenas / Silva) is a first time starter that has a good shot to take this one. She has put in three strong peaking workouts. Her connections are statistically stellar and this might give her a solid chance.
